I'm guessing - I'm Swedish - that active duty American military commanders really try and refrain from expressing political views, just as they do in Sweden. It's a good principle in a democracy, that the military does not interfere in politics. Ben Hodges is retired, so he can be a bit more outspoken, but from what I've seen, he still avoids taking any outright partisan stance. One can't label him democrat or republican, can you? In Sweden, up untill lately, the military in Sweden, has also been completely forbidden to act in any manner within Sweden, during peacetime. Because as late as 1931, a company was called out against striking workers (who had done absolutely nothing violent), and actually shot one worker dead. These days though, people want the military to help out with things like tracked wehicles in snowstorms and such, so some permissions have been given. But notably no policing whatsoever, in peace time.
I completely agree that "Western" governments need to adapt defensive education plans that harden our citizens against foreign attacks. Nothin as extreme as teaching kids about gun use, but Russia is preparing its next two decades of future soldiers with the prospect of more war, not less. we need to address these threats in a responsible manner.

Teaching our (older) children about gun use is not extreme. The Swiss have been doing it for 200 years. During that entire time, no one has dared invade Switzerland.
My pet peeve since the early GWB presidency was that we need to have a second obligatory education for adults. Adults vote, if having an educated voting public is no longer possible with just childhood education, and if the world moves too quickly to wait until the younger generation takes over, then educating the adult population is the only way. Some people have spoken about UBI in a world of robotics and automation so maybe we can do something there, UBI in exchange for education, early retirement in exchange for education. History, civics, geography, if you are to be a voter you need to at least have a strong grounding in the basics that are politically neutral like "what nations exist on the map" or "how do I check if something is really in the public record as per media claims".

I don’t think people understand that Russia isn’t interested in negotiating with Ukraine. It doesn’t consider Ukraine a nation that requires their consideration with respect to diplomatic relations. It’s just a territory available for the taking that servers “the greater good “ of the Russian Federation. The only country Russia will negotiate with in any kind of meaningful way, is America, UK, China and maybe France. Power only respects equal and stronger power.
As usual Gen Hodges is clear and to the point! Unfortunately the political parties in the USA prevent our foreign policy from being sound and effective.
I agree that enabling Ukraine to defeat Russia ought to be the goal; however, President Biden has never shown the courage to declare this as a goal. He has allowed himself to be deterred by the Kremlin. I am not sure that in the USA the voters will support that. A certain sense of fatigue is setting in.
The voters have spoken, and they fired Biden and his DEI hire. But support for Ukraine vel non was nowhere among the top seven issues motivating the electorate this time. I fly my Ukrainian flag every day, but for most people Ukraine is very far away, and they understand little about it. Neither Joe Biden nor Kamala Harris ever explained anything about the Budapest Memorandum or the Holodomor to the American people.
@@Comm.DavidPorter Why would they! Most Americans don't have a clue and aren't interested in learning. Will this taste of tyranny be an agreeable staple in our future governmental diet, or will a small, sampling sized appetizer be so horrifically bitter that it forces a mass rejection and powerful demand to be spat out and vomitted into the ground until ash? I don't know, but beyond all descriptive comprehension, is the shame I feel at our willingness to easily forego a way of life, considered by others to be so precious, that it is a privileged honor to sustain, worthy of sacrficing every drop of blood, until their last breath. Yet we stand silently oblivious to the costs our fate will extract.
I have been in conflcts and have always noticed that people who are at a distance often come up with complicated reasons for the conflict. but "being there" I have seen with my own eyes that the reason "why" is simple. On the contrary, I think it would have saved thousands of Ukranian (and Russian!) lives. Probably, the war would have been over by now. Instead, the war is likely to drag on another 1-2 years, before Russia breaks down completely.
Ukranian's aren't going to stop fighting, whatever Trump does with USA support. Trump doesn't doesn't even seem to understand, that almost half the military support comes from Europe and other countries. (And then Europe also takes care of 5-6 million refugees, on top of that.)
The USA sending 31 Abrams tanks for example, is kind of pathetic. Australia is now sending 49 of the exact(!) same model. And the US has 3'500 in storage! And in Ukraine, at any given time, each side operates something like close to a thousand tanks, I believe.
IMF says Russian economy now number four.
As a Cold War veteran, I can't really think of that time period as a world war.

You are spot on General with your assessment concerning the nuke threat by Russia! There is no benefit for Russia in using such a weapon. It‘s huge benefit lays entirely in the fact, that a threat of using nukes spreads fear and terror among the Ukrainian supporting states and the rest of the world! That’s it, not more and not less!
Enjoyed every bit of second of this amazing interview. Slava Ukraine.
Thank you for this. These new Americans forget on the ideology that this country was built on. Freedom and Liberty
Totalitarian dictators prefer domination and slavery. They don't forget, they chose and impose what serves them personally at the expense of all else
One to rule them all and in darkness bind them.
it's not ideology merely that the US was built on, it was the first deeply thought-out, philosophically deep and strategically-constructed to keep a people free to maintain their "self evident inalienable rights" , what we now call 'human rights' or civil rights. ie true freedom of the human spirit. Something russians who are NOT europeans actually bcuz they did had no exposure to the The Enlightenment in euro civilization, do not have a clue about. Romantic love itself came from the Enlightenment, ffs! Wonder why the russians are boorish and primal and now sadists against their cousin neighbors? Half the city of Kherson was tortured!!!!!!!!!!

Where are the people who think like Hodges but are active duty? We need someone like him making the decisions that will be carried out! His talents and common sense are being wasted.
Ben is a General not a geopolitician ! Therefore ,he should stop bulshiting nonesense .The most dangerous enemy of Russia IS NOT USA, EU OR JAPAN BUT CHINA.China will never and never again allow Russia to win any war against the West.
What about WWW III ???
Thank you so much, General Hodges, for speaking out.
Excellent coverage, thank you! 😊
Liberals and their policies are the problem.
In 20 years putins gunna be too old to make any differnce even their youngest military officials are incompetent theyve effectively hit a wall since their current exploits mirrors exactly how the Ussr orginally fell apart incident for incident

Thank you👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍

I don’t think people understand that Russia isn’t interested in negotiating with Ukraine. It doesn’t consider Ukraine a nation that requires their consideration with respect to diplomatic relations. It’s just a territory available for the taking that servers “the greater good “ of the Russian Federation. The only country Russia will negotiate with in any kind of meaningful way, is America, UK, China and maybe France.
Power only respects equal and stronger power.
As usual Gen Hodges is clear and to the point! Unfortunately the political parties in the USA prevent our foreign policy from being sound and effective.
Good reporting. Thank you. Strong Ukraine. Strong NATO. Strong Poland.
Another Sun Tsu precept is, fight your enemy where they are not. Subversion and cyber are two methods.

The Russians are talking absolute nonsense ! 😢😊😂
Even after receiving warning after warning after a myriad of warnings, what other population, except for the pitifully gullible and naive society we apparently have become, would willingly support a convicted felon, fraudulent liar, sexist cheat, authoritarian bigot and all around bad person, who continues to be denounced by every associate, business partner, co-worker and blood relative with whom he has ever been aquatinted? We have lived so long in freedom that we have become arrogantly complacent in our bubble of self-assuredness: "WE could NEVER lose our freedoms, NOT in AMERICA!"
Our blindness to life outside of our country, with our nonchalant attitude towards gaining any knowledgeable interest, create the sloven ignorance that has brought us to the brink at which we now find ourselves. Maybe a good dose of old fashioned tyranny MIGHT FINALLY switch our "head-lights" to "on", but it all depends on how much of a spine will emerge from the entire body of our official representatives. Will they honor their oath and finally unite to protect and stand against this ONE, insane "Putin-in-the-Making", or will each one act separately, on bended knee before the "Trump-King", and secure individual permission to feed each personalized greed and need for power?

They are mad. But just because they are mad does not make them stupid, the very opposite. Putin is a Pyschopath and like a dog that has gone mad, you cannot "reason" with Putin. You have to, as they say, "destroy" the dog , and those that "reason" will get bitten.

An objective would be for Ukraine to push Russia out enough to create a shorter and more defensible border. That doesn't require getting all of the Donbas back, but it means recovering locations that proved to be fairly defensible. Having a border between farm fields at the same elevation isn't much of a border.
