I have written this same thing many times regarding this knife, but I really think that the general population have a skewed impression of Taiwan, like its some dirt floored warehouse of child slavery with starving dogs running about. Reality is that Taiwan is quite similar to Japan or S Korea with wages not too much cheaper. It is simply not dirt cheap 3rd world labour. Cheaper than the US? Sure, I concede it is. The knives produced by Spyderco's Taiwan office tend to be of the highest quality and many argue more than their Japan or US offices. Sal knows like everyone that a knife built in the US is an automatic selling point but remember, "we" said these same things about Japanese products at one time and today made in Japan is a selling point. I would pit this against any other Bushcraft knife out there and I think this is why it is priced the way it is. The fit and finish is as close to perfection as I have seen. The handle is incredibly comfortable to hold in any manner. This is where Spyderco took a looong time in R&D. This isn't easy to make consistently and is the reason, I believe, the Taiwan operation got the job. Hate to say it but compare the build quality of this compared to most US produced knives and its not really comparable. Yes, they are expensive and I agree they should be less but the reality is they are selling quite well as is. I bought one because the handle grip is unbelievable with no other being close.

I agree with all who say that it's too much expensive, and of course you pay a lot due to the brand (here in Italy is about 290 euro!!! ) , but I had almost no options because importing a knife from abroad is so difficult here...I have other knives, including the mora bushcraft in stainless steel, that I used and abused so many times and never failed in making the job done, but if I should choose a knife to carry with me in a remote place, I would definetely go for a knife like the spyderco bushcraft...Not necessarily this knife, but a knife the same style and construction. Bushcraft got discontinued and is on sale. I picked one up to become my new camping / outdoors blade. First Spyderco fixed blade and quality is out the door. I expect nothing less from Taichung who have been known for their precise manufacturing. To put some fears to rest... We as Americans have a lot in common with Taiwan who is a fledgling democracy seeking their right for independence (sound familiar)?
I love this knife, and the Benchmade Bushcraft as well. The great mystery for me is why this knife seems to weigh so much more than the Benchmade when they both weigh exactly the same?!
This knife is one of my most favorite bushcraft knives. Bark River Knives I like very much too. they get carried even though i own now a custom bushcraft knife.
This knife is made in Tawain and that doesn't really bother me too much but when you consider that and the price it just doesn't make any sense. Thank you for this review, this knife is the closest i can get or find to the bushcraft knife from the Ray Mears Woodlore collection, nice small blade as a lot of bushcraft knifes are just simply to big. This is a great tool that you will find yourself using more so than most other knifes, from battoning to picking meat out of your teeth, don't get me wrong you ain't gonna be cutting trees down and carving grizzlys up but it will certainly get you started
This is one awesome knife, but what took me so long to get one was the price.I carry a couple of Esee's and a few Mora's when I'm out in the woods and they are all excellent knives, but I love Spyderco products too and this is a wonderful looking and feeling tool. I bought mine over 18 months ago on FLEA-Bay for a really good price (& No it isn't a Fake as I took it to Spyderco when visiting the Denver area). So if you can find it on the secondary market for a decent price, I say go for it and you won't be disappointed.
Really cool knife i was going to get it for my birthday but i don't feel like saving up 200+ euros for it so i'm probably going to get a TBS boar or Fantoni Triglav.
Normally I wouldn't even consider spending $175--$200 on a knife. But if I could get disciplined and never buy another knife, I might consider it. One knife to rule them all. Until you lose it. Then you cry yourself to sleep for a week. Still ... what a beauty!

I have to be honest , I don't really understand how excited people get or how controversial batoning is. Yes, I totally get that a small axe is a better tool but I believe that many modern outdoors and bushcraft knives are built with this in mind. You are obviously limited by the blade size, what is wrong with it? I've read and seen dozens of people do it without issue. I guess what I'm saying is that carrying an axe is a rather big deal in both size and weight. An axe is inconvenient. A knife like this is nothing to carry on a small hike. Realistically, most folks won't be carrying an axe. Knives are made for cutting, and I'd argue batoning also. Good review.
Great review. Like many others I don't get the batoning with a knife. I would use a hatchet, but if all you have on you is your knife and you need to baton some timber...thankfully here in Australia we rarely (unless your camping in the tropics or snow country) have to worry about that. Regardless, for $316 AUD I'll get the Mora Camping set (hatchet & knife), a Mora Companion Heavy duty (as a spare), a decent folding saw and still have more than $150 AUD in my pocket for other kit.

I can set up a full, good, basic & functional kit for that kind of money and probably end up with a bit of change. I imagine a lot of your followers and others watching these reviews are in the same 'camp' as me, so to speak.

Mora bushcraft type knives can do everything this beautiful knife can do but or a mere fraction of the price. Excellent review, thumbs up all the way. Subscribed as well.
Yeah, this one isn't cheap. I love Moras too, but will say that this one is more solid than a Mora. The cost is the main deterrent for most people and I totally get that.
Excellent video, I have been wondering why there is not very many videos with this knife, Spyder co is a great company and makes great knives, I guess maybe because it is on the high side for a knife this size coupled with the company is not well known as a bushcraft knife maker? If you put a ferro rod in that hole in the blade, twist the blade to hook the rod, and push hard, does it produce an awesome amount of sparks? Cause I imagine it would!
Nice knive but very pricey. I can buy, equally as good, handmade bushcraft knives in Sweden for half this price. Set to my own specifications. So I would think twice before buying this. Nevertheless, a good review. But if I were Spyderco I would overthink my price policy.
This is the only Woodlore clone I own. One of the most comfortable knives I've ever used and it will do it all. You're right, the knife just doesn't get enough love from the bushcraft community but maybe that keeps it from being common. You did a nice presentation, well prepared, thank you.
I’m very surprised that for a dedicated Bushcraft knife, and for the price, the sheath does not include a firesteel loop. Great looking knife though. Pretty basic thing for a Bushcraft knife sheath to have.
I cant get a cheap Mora with a stainless steel blade for a fraction of that price and it does all that. Whats so special about the spyderco bushcraft? If I want to baton stuff I use an ESSEE or an axe not a bushcraft knife. :)
Say Heah Tim, Yeah, I like a good Wood Craft Knife, over the years, I evolved to using a little longer blade. I do like that type of nlsde shape though to be able to push cut off with my thumb do a drop point works great for me. In fact recently I had a Battle Horse Attitude modifide a little, I had a slight curve put on it and had the drop point lowered to be able to push cut better with my thumb. I also had a High Scandi Grind put on it. I like a slicer but yet a strong Knife. If it might be needed to survive with. I got a White handle to team up with my smaller white handle H.I. Khukuri, Battle Horde did a Outstanding job, Peters tempered it, and the Price/Quality Ratio is Awesome. You can see my Knife on Google Plus just search Paulie 4X

This knife is not meant to be used for what you describe as batoning. This is meant for carving etc. Why do the majority of American knife reviews start by using the knife for a purpose that is was not designed for?

Unfortunately, the hole on the knife is too small to do that.

You could wear it on the left side - yes, though it may not be as smooth drawing it out as compared to wearing it on the right side.
