[I will not even make reference to how some fetishists have published how they use this item but...] I have this item attached to my sewing table and it is invaluable. I know I am the only person in the world who ever needs to use a seam ripper (yeah right, if you believe that I have a bridge to sell you in NYC :) but in reality, it truly holds the fabric end when you have to "un-sew" an error you have made. When one is doing an alteration and have to reconstruct a garment for someone the "third hand" will hold one end of the garment as you use one hand to tug the other end and the second hand to use your seam ripper. I also use the "third hand" to hold materials if I might be braiding something. They have many uses if you need something held taught while you need the dexterity of your actual hands; I cannot name them all. And, like you mentioned in the video -- They are Cheap!
And you are darned correct if you think I would love to win a Juki :) !!

Teaching a friend to use her new sewing machine. Told her her first purchase should be a seam ripper. And in making her mom's throw pillow covers (excellent first project, btw) she got to get some practice with it. 😁

Many things have multiple uses. Sewing or torture device, depends on how it's used.
