I think of the way you say the phrase as similar to Marcel DuChamp's "Fountain" a fave thought-based art pieces that turns the mundane/icky into fine art, or at least something genuinely thoughtful :)
Also, when you discussed Kayfabe, I think most of the youtubers I like to watch most have snarky or catchy things they say, but they and their audience are aware we all put up facades. Being able to admit "I don't know" is the antithesis (antidote?) to a whole pile of "here's the things" without any admission of ignorance.

If you know who to ask, who is good at what, it's good practice to work together. Thanks for this. I've been seriously disappointed by how many leftist creators I've found quite educational in the past have turned into primarily dunking channels. I tend to find "Dunking on the Chuds" to be lazy and pointless and excessively self-congratulatory. There is a HUGE difference between analysis and debunking, and simply dunking. The key is how _personalized_ the content is. Is it addressing the actual issues and beliefs and facts, or is it just personal insults? IMO dunking almost always distracts from any other points being made, and obfuscates the real problems and impacts those aforementioned beliefs and facts really have.
It is just another form of Spectacularization, participating in the appropriation of theory and education and praxis and the neutering of it into mere mediated entertainment.

    • @MistaZULE
      @MistaZULE 2 года назад +29

I agree. I think a great example of dunking while also being informative is someone like hmomberguy. His climate change video is the right amount of making fun of the opposition. The famous “sell their houses to who Ben? Fucking aquaman?!” Is legendary because it’s both a funny line and delivery and also expertly destroys his argument.
When the video links poor arguments and then answers them and provides data and context it can be a useful and informative video. However, if it lacks the information then it’s useless. It just reinforced pre existing beliefs with little addition. It can be entertaining but is ultimately useless as a teaching tool.

As hard as it is to accept, people like Shapiro and Peterson and Carlson are not actually the problem, they're merely symptoms of a far deeper and more pervasive problem that existed long before they did.
We should be building our group identity on something more material and substantial and positive. We should not do so by adopting the tactics of the opposition group, because their tactics do not build healthy communities.

    • @MistaZULE
      @MistaZULE 2 года назад

@@EphemeralTao Very well said and I agree especially in regards to the Shapiros and Petersons being symptoms of a deeper problem. These guys only have a following because people want to hear their voices. When that desire to hear their opinions dissipates, so do their voices.
I am very scared that a lot of leftist content (at least the most popular stuff) just feels like the mirror of what the conservatives do. They insult and hurl unbased opinions at the opposition, then we will as well. It is simply reacting to their words and if we are constantly reacting they will keep their power in the situation.
Like you said, we need material change and that can be started in our own communities. I'm worried a lot of people who are terminally online will believe that them dunking on a chud is their political action for the day, rather than actually doing political action.

The humility and good faith is key. When someone came up to me and talk about ableism, my initial thought was "what the hell are you talking about?" but I remembered when i talk to people about mixed race issues and tried to take them up like i would like folks to take me up. Opened my mind to an entire field of things i had been ignorantly saying and doing that promoted ableist ideas. Saying things were "dumb", "stupid", talking about "being blind to issues" which equates eye sight with ignorance (which the blind are not too keen on), calling things "crazy" (a term used to institutionalize folks for being different). the rabbit hole is daunting. Even in my own legal field, the term "grandfather clause" has wildly racist origins.
and it is hard to keep up because we are ignorant to many of them. I only bring up ableism, but my past is full of homophobic, transphobic, etc things.
I love the thought of allowing people to grow, and helping them grow without judgement. "they should know better" is not always helpful.

It's hard to keep up because you're taking it too seriously, and no I'm not gonna say you're doing newspeak or any other nonsense, but you seem to have a problem with etymology itself.
You can say something is "crazy" while advocating for a society that takes mental health as seriously as bodily health (which are the same), and from a universal healthcare perspective, and most of the people with actual mental disorders are aware of this (sometimes is part of cognitive therapy, to learn how to deal with the inherent ambiguities of life).
The line between legit cultural criticism and etymological virtue signaling is a hair thin one.

The essence of the issue here is that people started mistaking their opinions for concrete identities. When you've locked yourself into certain ideologies, especially intense ones, then you're more than likely going to seek out the "destroying", "owning", or "dunking" of those who oppose that identity. Instead of it being an exchange of ideas, it's become survival of the fittest, when the "fittest" are locked into not evolving as a person. Thus, therein lies the issue.

Hosting videos is incredibly expensive/resource heavy, and something no other site has really been able to compete with (at least when it comes to long form videos). RUclips has its monopoly because it is quite profitable for google, an american business, centralised under american imperialist capitalism. We would be more likely (Ada and I recon) to have small local/interest-based sites, maybe more like Peertube, which is a decentralised open-source alternative to youtube. There would be smaller communities, less overlap, so maybe somewhat less of this kind of dunking would happen automatically (though I'm sure each community would have their own in-fighting, because who doesn't!).
There might be more significant limitations on how many videos, how much data, you can upload or keep. And of course video hosting is never limited to creative endeavours; most videos are apparently reviews, vlogs and how-to vids. You need space for literally millions of cat videos (and dunk videos as in "Big Ass; Apple Bottom; round booty" type of dunk videos). I don't think any video essayist or artist has anywhere near as many subscribers as the biggest gaming channels either. So when imagining what an anti-capitalist youtube might look like, I think its important to consider that the types of videos we make are not terribly important to the function or survival of video hosting platforms. We're just little guys. 😊
How would videos gain traction without the algorithm? It used to be based on viewcount, now its more view duration and whatever the algorithm recons keeps people on the site longest. With small decentralised video platforms popularity might be more like having a local band; you'd have to rely on word of mouth and editorial choice. There would be no worldwide fame and glory in it, it would be more like a hobby for the most part. I don't necessarily mind that idea; I would be okay with having a smaller audience if I didn't have to worry about money or anything 😁

This is part of why twitter and other social media sites REALLY need a vibe check option, because so often (at least in my experience) dunking is rooted in frustration. And a lot of the time I feel that frustration when I saw something I wish I hadn't.
And there's times when the person is truly a jerk, but there's also times when the person is just ill-informed and have more to learn. I wish it was more based in education and providing alternatives as opposed to like, causing feuds for clout. (but some people DO educate as they dunk) (and its always cool to punch up)

It is very well possible that the point of the video flew over my head…
Aren’t the ideas held or at least advertised by specific people worth dunking on? I see a lot of dunking on people for petty reasons within leftist spaces or of course done by right wingers but usually leftist videos about right wingers tend to engage with what a person stands for and use personal attacks in a comedic way. We‘re humans after all and humans are funny.
It’s unproductive to define ourselves only or even mostly by what we are against so I appreciate your efforts to build a community, on- and offline that is about living by anticapitalist and kind values. I just don’t see how it is mutually exclusive with dunking on the fasc.

Also kinda misses the point where those who dunk unopposed will tend to gain the greatest traction and dominate a platform ala YT circa the 20teens.
Having a community identity outside of attacking others is good. But you still need to attack others when they are actively derailing this whole "society" thing.
Also also, empathy is great for those who are open to it. Some people primarily speak the language of aggression and you need to be able to speak to them in their own language before you'll stand a chance of getting them to adopt a new one.

I'm not sure if the video ever out and out said dunking as a whole is bad-and the above timestamp describes the necessity of "battling against misinformation, snake oil salesman, dog whistles and brain-washing". But can't that be done without dunking-without always going to dunking? And I feel the issue is with the mentality/culture of dunking, of "opportunistic dunking", that has risen out of the heavy reliance on the tactic; it becoming a behavior so rewarded that it runs amok, regardless of whether it serves the original purpose towards which the tactic was implemented. And while its easy to think "we'll just stop abusing it, only doing it when its really the right thing to do", its not like the people who have been abusing it didn't think they were always "in the right" in the first place.
I feel like, if we can acknowledge how a behavior that we do has grown to be damaging, or ineffective and stagnating, the only honest answer is to look at it at a whole, at the impulse, at every time that it could be done, and say "can i do something else? something better?"

@@TheLadyFl3x Considering that Gamergate pretty much set the tone at first I agree that it’s worth looking at the way discourse is done and whether or not the way „dunking“ happens is actually helpful.
Many of us speak in very online language, rely a bit too much on a streamer‘s community for validation, try to get the upper hand over the right (and adjacent) by humiliating them in public exclusively… I have certainly done all of these things and as much as all that is attractive for gamer me who grew up on South Park there is an exclusive, insulating edge to it.
It hurts to say but most people are normies.
      And we can save them!
Thanks for replying! It is interesting to reflect on incentives when it comes to the way online discourse is done and that is one point of the video I missed.

What I've learned from being in a Communist Party is that it's easier to form community with other leftists who might come from different branches, even when we're dunking on them amongst ourselves. If your only thing is dunking and exposing yourself to negativity all the time, it hurts yourself as well. Building community and doing good helps your cause more.

I feel like the propensity for "dunking" and "cancellation" on the Left has to do with isolation from institutional power - it's an illusion of power. Because the Right is functionally a "safe space" from the threat of dunking or cancellation (indeed, it's a refuge for many "cancelees") dunking feels increasingly impotent, with the result that the power of cancellation has increasingly been turned on itself, often in more abstract terms. It's great to see someone articulate a different model of group identity creation, that can perhaps wean people off their addiction to fruitlessly "owning" the Right.

Dropping a sub to both channels and very much curious to see what happens on the other channel.
This is the first video of yours I've watched (I have entirely too many things in my watch later) and I'm very happy this was the one.
Many nods, many mmhmms, and many reminders of values I am (trying very hard and inevitably failing consistently) committed to. I really liked the point about emotional vulnerability. It's a very difficult thing to do and I find myself alternating between letting go and white-knuckling (then getting upset that I white-knuckled again).
In a world designed to make you angry, in one that likes to pick a marginalization to single out every 6 months or so, it's difficult to let yourself feel or do more than play offensive defense but it is radical and it is world building.

It seems like the disadvantage to humans being more collective is that to work together you have to be able to identify as together in some way.
It’s no wonder GB and US are worse at collectivising, as there are an infinite number of ways to do so. We’re individualist and in a attempt to salvage a collective identity we’ve become fragmented.
I don’t think that it’s the fault of any culture of system per-say, just (through individualism) the fact that we never agreed to live in that culture/system.
Countries with richer traditions and stronger social norms will easily be able to encourage more communication socially because ‘normal’ experience is shared.
It just all feels like an emotional issue over an intellectual one.
Beyond empathy and acceptance, we need a sense of kinship with those around us.
If we can’t all identify based on race, creed, culture, politics etc. then the attempt has to be to find a level lower than that to sit on.
We have to be more than our intersectionality for it to even be able to be part of the conversation.

Okay, finally finished, great video. The thing that I both loved and was the most crazy to me was the portion about this idea of a distributed, collective good that becomes aware of it's limited perspective and owns up to it and diffuses the expertise and the ongoing discussion of benevolent progress amidst it's number, not only because it's a really fascinating idea but it's one I've been toying with for years now as a way to write a distinct section of worldbuilding in my TTRPG writing, and it's nuts to hear someone else get to the same place as I was on their own. I felt kind of crazy talking about the idea of the good being one that is extremely vulnerable and naked about it's own faults and that that nakedness about its emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and physical capabilities was part of what made them good, what helped them help others, what helped them grow and mature as an individual and as part of a great community when paired with an urge to grow for the better. But here it is, alive in well in others, and it's super exciting to see. I might have to finish putting it together and publish sometime, before the rest of the world passes it by XD.
Continue to knock these out of the park you 2, the work is great and continues to stun. Also make sure you get some sleep.
