I definitely wouldn't have built it without using a 3 core cable and passing the earth through to the GPO. Otherwise you could have an item under test with an earth fault that goes undetected by an RCD, which is extremely dangerous.
That's a valid point however if it wasn't used with an isolation transformer, or if the isolation transformer had a fault, that's where an issue could arise. I understand it's you doing this just for you, but I'm a stickler for if an earthed socket is fitted to anything it should be earthed.
Defo needs the earth wire continuing through to the GPO....iow the lamp intercepts the active wire only......if there is an earth fault the lamp will glow. A switch can be wired across the lamp holder to provide nomal operation after intial test power up.

Yes, but if you had this connected via an isolation transformer, the earth is not connected anyway...

DETA muck ..... HPM isn't much better, it's the reason why I only use Clipsal.
