    As soon as I saw Elements 2024 was released I came to your channel to see if it is worth the upgrade price. As much as I want to support the development of the product, I'll skip this version and hope they introduce worthwhile improvements to the next one. Moving to smaller, grey scale icons doesn't make any sense to me.
    Thank you, George, for your great assessment!

    In your "What's new" video at 16:00 you mention adding a reset button. I've been using Ctrl-Z to back out of any changes I've made so I've never given a reset a second thought. Works every time. Your videos have been a big help. Great job!

      After some more experimentation I found that the rest button is there if the interface is set to the Basic workspace, and not there if set to Custom workspace. So the missing reset button is an error that I expect Adobe will fix in the next release. The reason why I like reset buttons is that it can take you back several steps in just one click, ctrl+z only goes back one step.

    I'm a bit of a simpleton. I still use Elements 2022. Only use it for cropping, cleaning, sharpening, removing shake/blur, and removing haze. And sometimes resize and fix a pixelated photo. And lastly, once in a blue moon replace or fix a background. I don't see anything in the 2024 version that would improve my process or any substantial improvements to these existing processes, I am just an amateur, and stick with auto modes, on my Canon 80D. I'm retired and 78 yr. old. I’m a retired Senior Systems Analyst over Servers for a large corporation. Take Family, Nature, and Special Olympics Sports and Events. I have been using Premiere a lot lately to create videos of old digitized videos and to make RUclips videos for family and friends. It is kind of fun and a bit of a learning curve. I have amassed on my PC over 338,000 photos for Special Olympics and over 240,000 photos for personal and family.

      For most people I recommend upgrading every 3-5 years. PSE doesn't change that much between versions. That pace should be often enough to keep up with basic changes to the operating system. Only reason to upgrade more often is if a new version has a new feature that you want.

    George, thanks for highlighting the new features added to PSE 2024. You are the best. I upgraded immediately as my Mac OS Sonoma & PSE 2022 were not compatible. Interestingly the PSE 2024 Mac version still has the layers, effects, filters, etc tabs in the traditional bottom right corner & the color match effects has a reset button. Slight differences from what you pointed out with your PC version review. Also, completely agree the new colorless interface is not an upgrade but done to accommodate dark mode.

      You're welcome John. I am sure that by 2025 the buttons will have become tabs in the Mac version. No idea why Windows doesn't have a reset button, that one is a obvious feature need. Maybe Adobe will fix that in the Spring mini update.

    Might have to get this upgrade. As my 2021 version won’t open my Fuji X-T5 raw files. Usually not an issue (had the same problem with my Nikon Z6ii before I went all in with Fuji) as I mostly shoot jpegs, but every now and then being able to use the raw file would be helpful.

    Hi George, Thanks for the good summary of the "improvements" in PSE 2024. For yet another year, I am underwhelmed by what Adobe have added to the app. As an aside, I also use Luminar Neo and with Neo there seems to be a fairly constant stream of significant and useful new features coming out all the time. It seems to me that PSE is just falling further and further behind. However, I certainly thank you for your excellent videos, helping us keep up to date with what is happening. Cheers 🙂

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  9 месяцев назад +3

      Adobe really doesn't care about PSE. A couple of years ago they put in nag screens throughout the program trying to get people to switch over to Adobe Photoshop. At least they dropped that bad idea. Adobe is very good at keeping old programs going long after they lose interest. They kept Freehand going for almost a decade, and PageMaker hung on almost forever even after it was replaced by InDesign. At some point I expect that Adobe will drop PSE in favor of Photoshop. I would personally like to see a program somewhere between these two, more feature rich than PSE yet not as top heavy as Photoshop.

    Am I the only one who could care less about adding text, butterflies, stars, etc. to my photos? I am the only one who doesn't care about creating animations to my photos? I only care about fixing corrections to my photos. Things like removing dust, leveling/cropping, removing artifacts, fixing eye issues, etc. Not turning them into "art" or changing the way the sky looked in the photo. If you do that, you are ruining your photos and the next generation (or two) will look at them and say WTH? Give me the tools to properly and easily organize my photos. Give me the tools to preserve my photos in the best way possible. Don't focus on ways to turn my photos into a circus.

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  10 месяцев назад +3

      Photoshop Elements has always been about doing the custom stuff, that is why it comes with text, backgrounds, styles, clip art, etc. There are much better programs out there for straight photo editing, like Audacity Photo, ON1, or Luminar. For the creative stuff Adobe Photoshop is the best, but Photoshop Elements can also do amazing images if you know how to work around its limitations. It can do all the regular photo editing chores but that is not what it is designed for.

    Hi George, I just left a comment on one of your older CS5 tutorials. I made a mistake thinking Elements was free, not just a free-30 day trial.
    Do any of your videos cover the most compelling reasons to buy Elements for those of us disaffected when Adobe went
    subscription only after CS6? I also mentioned in that comment that thanks to you I found out about Skylum's Luminar Neo
    which I am trying out now with a one-month subscription for around $12.

    of each feature. Adobe should be paying you for input if they really want to improve. ✨

    I'm considering changing from Photoshop CS6 to Photoshop Elements 2024. I am a hobby user, so while I've been using Photoshop since 1998, and have taken lots of classes, the price of upgrading PS is really prohibitive. Do you think it will be a disappointing change? AND will I be able to open my existing documents. Thanks for your video.

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Mary, I think you will find PSE very limited. It really doesn't compare to Adobe Photoshop. It is a great little program if it is all you know, but if your experience is with the vastly more powerful Adobe Photoshop you will not like it. For all of my important work I use Adobe Photoshop. Since PSE is very limited I would expect that your Photoshop files will not be fully useable in Photoshop Elements.

    How can I edit a smart object in Photoshop Elements 2024?

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  3 месяца назад +1

      If you are talking about a Photoshop Elements Smart Object Layer, then yes, right click on the layer and choose Simplify from the popup menu. If you are talking about an Adobe Photoshop Template that includes a Smart Object, then it depends. PS Smart Objects frequently have embedded Photoshop files showing up as a layer, you click on that and it opens the other Photoshop file. You can't do that in PSE. You still may be able to use the template but the file inside of a file part will not work.

I mainly use elements while I'm scanning old pictures to make them look better and also I still make cards and send them out on my creative side.
    The upgrade deal that I used included Photoshop premiere elements because I want to edit some of the old videos I have and I thought the newer version would be easier to do. So. We'll see.

      Hi Sue! Photoshop Elements had a complete redesign in version 11. That is when the new look came in and also when the focus changed from being a smaller Photoshop to being a much more friendly consumer image editor. One of the main differences you will notice, aside from the new look, is that much of Photoshop Elements has been simplified. Many things were removed and most simplified, although over the years we are slowly getting back some of what was taken away. I still consider version 10 the best version of the program, really out of date now, but still a great version. My earliest videos for Photoshop Elements on my other channel are for version 11 and the main reason I started to do that was because of the drastic change in the program. You can find all of my older videos on my other channel, and all of my new videos on this channel. Check out www.youtube.com/@HTGGeorge for the older stuff.

In your specific need you say shapes and logo creation, both of those are usually done with vector tools like paths and the pen tool. Photoshop Elements doesn't have those tools. There are other options out there at a low cost, I personally like the Affinity suite of programs which includes a photo tool like Photoshop, a drawing tool like Illustrator, and a page layout tool like InDesign, all for a single one time cost of about $165. If I didn't have Adobe Photoshop that is the way I would go.

      PSE never changes that much between versions, except for 2024 with the light/dark modes. So if nothing new is useful to you then no real reason to update. But... I would update soon if you are using Win 10 or 11 because each new update has improvements in the coding that help it to run better with the current version of Windows, so you may see some degradation in performance as your version gets furthur out of date each year.

    Is there any way to eliminate the latin garbage text that appears in a new text paragraph box? I find it annoying that I have to select and delete it before I start typing in my own text. I also ran into a situation where I could not enter spaces between words if I went back and edited text. Is that some kind of bug? Also cannot open Canon raw images and have to first open them using preview and save as a tiff to import them. Will Adobe release an update to fix this or did I buy a buggy piece of software that I am stuck with?

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  5 месяцев назад +1

      You can turn off the greeking text in Preferences (Edit/Preferences). The setting is under Type and it is a check box for Fill new type layers with placeholder text. You should be able to add spaces between words, no idea why that would not work, it isn't a bug with the program and I have not been able to recreate that error. Check your font, the type settings, and the tracking. Photoshop Elements can't edit raw images directly and instead opens them in the Camera Raw Editor. For unknown reasons the Camera Raw Editor is not installed by default in PSE 2024. You will find an install button for that at the bottom of the Help menu. Install the editor and then everything should work correctly.

PSE is for hobbiests and can work well if you know the tricks. Adobe PS is a fully professional program and is the best on the market for basically everything. High George, like ya say not much here. I have a concern about the gradients lost. If possible maybe list a file workflow to capture some of these old ones to import into the new program??? Also, does Adobe Stock offer any "B roll" for Premiere??? One last thought is that you can get a upgrade discount which I think is like $110.00 for past PSE users. I last upgraded in 22 and this was my year to upgrade again, however because of how they messed up the gradients I don't think so much! I really don't like the practical look of the black mode for reasons you stated, it does make a difference on photo saturation. How often do you see black matts used in photography??? You don't normally.
    Thank you for all you do! Scratching head!

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Rich, PSE hasn't changed the gradients in the gradient tool in Expert (Advanced) mode, just in the new Add Type Guided Edit. So nothing lost there, just a bad decision on which gradients to show first in that new guided edit. Adobe is offering $20 off upgrade pricing, but you have to scroll to the bottom of their main PSE page to find that. If you wait until January you can usually get better discounts on Amazon. Adobe Stock does have video and animations available but I haven't yet looked at the new Premiere Elemenets to see if that is available in the 2024 program. Dark Mode is very trendy right now, everyone is doing it, but I prefer a neutral gray around images when I am editing so I won't be using the new Dark Mode. At least this update looks like they put some thought into it, not just a batch of useless new Guided Edits like we have been seeing mostly in the last few updates, and the rainbow gradients being listed first looks like a U.S. decision, that wouldn't have come from their India programmers.

    Unfortunately if you open a RAW file you cannot save the file as a .jpg without saving as a copy, and also you cannot edit in the generated file unless you convert to 8 bit. Elements 2023 allowed these no problem, so why the backward move? Not worth in my opinion, the upgrade cost for increased problems.

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Malcome, saving a raw to jpg will always be a copy because it is a different file format, therefor a different file. It is safer to save as a copy anyway since that protects the original. Photoshop Elements has always been an 8-bit program and that hasn't changed in 2024. Adobe RAW in PSE 2024 runs exactly the same way it did in 2023. If you shoot a lot of RAW images and you want better editing tools I recommend using Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop which are much more powerful and feature rich, much better for photographers.
