I have always liked a few SLF songs but only recently got into their whole catalogue. Can't believe all the years I could have been listening to this, a wasted life! Best punk band ever, thats from a lifeling Ramones, Clash and Jam fan. As a southern Irish person with an absolute hatred of sectarianism, this music connects with the passion in my heart. Seeing them live for the first time in a few weeks. Can't wait!!!!!
I saw SLF as a 13 year old In the Mansion House In Dublin 1979 (or '80?) They left a lifelong Impression-still Absolutely timeless to hear them today,Powerful and Relevant Always-from Co.Louth In Ireland.
Along with Minor Threat, one of the two most inspirational bands ve ever seen Their first 3 studio albums are superb!! Was lucky enough to see them live here in NYC at a very small club called Trax on West 72nd St.on their first American tour. Saw the Undertones there too. Such GREAT GREAT punk bands..
The power and intensity of the music and Jake’s “gargling with razor blades” singing voice make for some of the greatest rock and roll music that has ever been produced !!!!
Colin, as someone who was there, I'm hoping you can answer a question for me, that I've been trying to figure out. Was this Ulster Hall, Whitla Hall or another venue?
@@rorydoconnor I am never sure of names of the various halls associated with Queen's but it was round side of Student's Union in Elmwood Ave and downstairs.
Wow man that was good - I grew up listening to SLF but THIS clip from the heart of Northern Ireland during the troubles, this is priceless and historic These guys were consummate ACTIVISTS as well as fine musical artists
I always wondered what it was like for them back then on their own turf, i imagined it to be like a battlefield but literally anything could happen at a minutes notice. The pub bombings and car bombs, could have gone bad very quickly. They still here to tell the tales. Respect to SLF.
1979 Aberdeen - since then the soundtrack of my life, seen them many times in many places since, next up Glasgow Barras sold out on 16th and 17th (Paddys night), can't wait
What can anyone say about Johnny Was? For a teenage band to take that song and do what they did with it is incredible. That is, for me, the pinnacle of what punk could be. BTW, who put the dislike....? Feargal Sharkey?
What an amazing piece of film... My favourite band of all time... First saw them in Birmingham Odeon in 1983.... And just saw them in Bristol on March 9th...with my 17 year old son... And just heard xSLF are playing on Sunday May 14th in my local club. ..in Dartington, Devon.... can't believe it!! 2023 off to a fiery start 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This isnt just music. This is a prophetic message in that time. Jake Burns with all his talent could have been doing some commercial junk. Instead he and the band challenged all the political and social ills. They absolutely nailed it with top lyrics and top music. And at such a young age. Other bands like the Clash were great but they were older had more commercial backup and had much more time. SLF did everything at a young age over limited time and I suppose on a limited budget. Correct me if I m wrong. Anyway just check out all the lyrics. Blows you away. Ok better stop now.
The brother of drummer Jim Reilly, a guy called Kidso Reilly, was shot dead by a British soldier in 1988. He was visiting family in Belfast. He was also road manager for all girl pop group Bananarama. The soldier shot him for no reason and was charged with murder.
Incredibly talented musicians. And, Jake was a smokin guitar player at the time of this performance but, he didn't stop working on his playing and, getting better and better over time. He's an extremely underrated guitar player IMO. He's doing a helluva lot of the heavy lifting during the live performances (lead vocals, lead guitar, nuanced guitar accents, master of ceremonies, etc... A fucking Champion
By the way, first time seeing SLF was on the “Go For It” tour of 1981. SLF, with Missing Persons at the Florentine Gardens in Hollywood. Missing Persons was, shall we say, in my opinion, blown off the stage that night.
Glasgow Apolo. Could be louder than anywhere. Many a fucking good live album recorded there. They tore OUR shit hole down. It did move when everyone was rocking .
To anyone who never seen s.l.f live may that be a lesson 2 u u don't know what u r missing met them all at rebellion at Blackpool ,backstage passes then got s.l.f. tattoo on wrist God bless stiff little fingers xxx
Brilliant - saw them in Carlisle Town Hall on this tour all those years ago. I was a naïve kid from from New Zealand but they got me into punk and I have been a fan ever since. Saw them recently when they came to NZ, we are all a bit older and bigger, but they put on a great show. Thanks for sharing!
Saw them at the Whisky in L.A. the first time they came to the states. Got to meet them; nice guys. Music was soooooo much better then, glad I’m old and was there (and all the other great shows I was fortunate enough to see).
I'm a bit of a mixed bag. I love some of the songs of SLF but am just really finding out about them now. I didn't know where they were from and their connection with history. This just makes me like them more.
And to think all that time ago they were only Bits Of Kids themselves. from a 2024 viewpoint you cant even begin to put it into perspective. Fkn awesome, and Hanx.
saw Johnny Was clip from this gig on Old Grey Whistle Test New Year Special '80, 81, n went n saw em at Mcr Apollo '81, first gig ever went to, every gig Iv'e been to since seemed anticlimactic by comparison, lol
such a pity Jim and Henry aren't still in it. Saw a picture the other day from the 'Tinderbox' era and it was Jake with Steve Grantley and Bruce Foxton but said 'Stiff Little Fingers' underneath 🤔
+Steve Coulter It was very good, I saw SLF 4 times in 1980. Top Rank in Brighton hosted some excellent gigs in 1980, Penetration, The undertones, Pretenders and UB40 to name a few.

Fantastic. When they say Queen's Hall, does that mean the Whitla Hall at Queen's University?
John Carvill queens hall Belfast
I'm pretty sure that this was shown with a U2 gig on the same programme, alternating a song from SLF then one from U2.
