Re your graph: For years I would set arbitrary reading goals, like 30 pgs a day, and fail. I only finally succeeded by putting any pages over 30 in an accumulated "bank" from which I could withdraw on days when I couldn't get the reading in. Knowing I could withdraw reduced the stress and incentivised reading more each day. Same concept. Great solution.
Lamont, do you remember your "it just clicked" moment with Swedish? In your immersion, when it felt like it was all coming together and you were closer to fluency than farther, or even when you realized that you were entry-level fluent right then and there? I call it a "bridge moment", as it happened to me with my Catalan when I was crossing a bridge while listening to a podcast some 3.5 years ago. I had it again today with French. Happy and prosperous 2025!
I love the idea to break goals into 1-3 month chunks. But for me, I’ve never had good success working on multiple goals at the same time. The simplicity of just having one goal to focus on makes the goal itself seem much more doable. Then when I reach that goal, I like the new goal to be a different type of goal to keep things fresh, for example switch from a language learning goal to a fitness goal. For things like language learning or fitness, I know this isn’t ideal because you shouldn’t be taking multi-month long breaks from those activities. But it’s better than giving up and not reaching any of my goals.
Totally different area, but I'm a novelist and ive met several would be novelists who need this advice. Set number goals, like 250 words per day, work every day, get it done. I gave up my tv at age 30, and 50 books later, here i am. Ok, i never saw an episode of Cheers, but i have 50 books out there. Or you could have 10 languages, if you like, in a similar time, but do learn how to set goals, keep a record, and be accountable to yourself. And if you fail, year after year, hey maybe it's not for you! Find an endeavor that excites you enough that TikTok and tv sound boring in comparison.
I needed to hear this potentially, learning languages has in part been procrastination on learning to write. I got a habit to write weekly but then when I realize I didn't know how to structure a novel or a short story I got overwhelmed.
I definitely struggle when it comes to doing more spoon-costly/difficult things, which makes sense. It's easier for me to consume/use English than L2, which is easier than L3. I LOVE watching or reading in L2, and I enjoy trying to write or speak in L3, but because English is easier, I keep circling back. Even if I step away from my computer or switch gears to 'study', I can only last for so long before being burnt out. So while I have specific goals for L2 and L3 for 2025, I think an important one to tackle is my motivation and energy. How to stay motivated and enthusiastic, despite the struggle. (And probably some ADHD tips, haha.) Great discussion video though! I always appreciate your insights, I feel like they're so unique in the community :) Best of luck with your 2025 goals! :D
Most polyglots will tell you anyone can learn languages. I say if for no other reason that they say they cant, they can't. After learning one language I told myself I am good at learning languages. Result, dopamine boost reward and better at learning languages.
I mean yeah 😂 I even go further and I tell people they already have learned a language. People underestimate how much the process suck, they don't remember all the meltdowns and tantrums, not to mention insecure adolescence, they had learning their first (mother-tongue) language.
+2.1k subscribers in 28 days, that's fair dinkum awesome, Lamont! (heard that in an Ozzyman video but never bothered to learn how to actually wield it properly 😅) Congrats on that growth, brother, you deserve it 🎉
Me gusta su consejo sobre los audiolibros y meditación. Yo tengo y usar un diario de bolsillo y mi vida es mejor gracias a el. Usaba me smartphone mas frecuentamente, pero ahora escribo y dibujo en mi diario de bolsillo.
Starting today, I'm going to be studying Japanese for 3 hours a day, 7 days a week for the entire year...and Swedish 2 hours a day, 4 days a week for the whole year as well. My plans are all mapped out but WHEW! Wish me luck🤞
60 people have already ignored you and posted comments. Me too. I am never wasting my time with your content. Please keep creating videos, even once every other month.
After watching this vid I made an hours goal to reach by my birthday and a spreadsheet to track it. I'm a computer nerd so it's got formulas that do all the mathing for me, but like computer nerds Im lazy so I didn't make anything cool - it's just a spreadsheet. I also passed the idea along to a couple of friends.
My goal right now is to have massive amounts of input. I've been doing that with one section of a podcast for like 2-3 days and I could eventually mimic it. Yes, her soothing voice helped :) HAHAHAHA
I always knew you were one of the more attentive RUclipsrs at replying to your comments. 😅 I’m the same way with Twitter, I get sucked into writing detailed arguments so people understand my thoughts but it accomplishes nothing. I’ve been happier since I’ve deleted it, even though most of the interactions I personally had were civil.
Ironic that I'm replying I know, but no, my maths is more exact than that: 500 hours divided by 8 hour working days, is 62.5 days. Your maths is taking into account things that don't count as working hours but ON the working days (e.g. if you finish work at 5, you're then counting the rest of that day as somehow being time that I'm wasting as well), which makes no sense when talking about working days. That would be like taking the fuel that you'll save by buying a bicycle into account, but then buying the bicycle and all the fuel as well.
Do you know any resources that have foreign language audiobooks? I am in the US learning French and I cannot find any anywhere. So I’ve just been reading without listening. All my listening comes from RUclips and TV shows.
For Spanish and French there might be some on Audible but Audible is such a horrible experience, and Storytel is catered specifically to Europe. It's better in every way that I have found.
Oh, well in Swedish, I "scuba dove" which is reading and listening to the audiobook at the same time, so it only took as long as the narrator took... but I didn't understand heaps, but slowly I learned to understand. In this language now, I don't have the audiobook but it takes around 5 to 6 minutes (the pages are quite long), but I have a limit of 8 words to check per page.
@@daysandwords That sounds like very good input. I feel like the listening and reading all at once concept could also be followed via LingQ. I wonder why you chose books+audiobooks over a platform with an implemented dictionary? Thank you for your content!
Yeah I don't watch cricket anymore. I found it was addictive when I didn't have any direction in life, but now that I'm doing stuff it's like "Why am I watching this?"
No I mean that it was only addictive when I had no goals, and then it became boring. Plus the coverage in Australia is SO bogan right-wing propaganda... it's gross. Baseball is my relaxation now.

I got it from the cricket in the 90s, they used to have it for the runrate. Now they do a silly version of it that's harder to follow.
