I am a Sri Lankan burgher now living in Australia after immigrating in 1961 with my parents and fellow family members, In 1961 with the prospect of anticipated discrimination foreshadowing poor job prospects for us my parents made the bold decision and got accepted to Australia,We were able to by working hard and long hours and many sacrifices enjoy a great future that sadly would not have been available in our own motherland Sri Lanka,Still love my motherland and sad for the Burghers still there facing hardships in their own country that I have spoken to many while travelling in Sri Lanka ,The contribution they made to Sri Lanka goes unrecognised even now,,😢😢😮❤

My mom said burghers are 'Carapothu Lansi" but inside her heart she loved them. Aunty Daffny never let me down my bad English. She taught me. Corrected me. They are the real assert we had. But unfortunately no one recognized them in our society. They never asked for a separate land. They shared the same hardships as majority Sinhalese people. But we all loved them so much. That means we all mixed up so much. Now is is very hard to fined unmixed burghers in our society. They were absorbed like to a sponge by the majority Sinhalese population.

SWRD Bandaranaike’s political aspirations in 1956 destroyed the whole country. English was the link language among the Sri Lankan races. The Portuguese,the Dutch , the British descendants used English 😂as their mother tongue. Most Sinhala speakers too adopted English as their main language. 20 years after the Swabhasha policy , the country faced difficulties,divisions etc. Now every family who can afford to send their children abroad for their education, do so because the living standards have changed, deteriorated. Political ambitions can ruin a country. Sri Lanka 😭😭😭😭🥵🥵🥵🥵😥

Whether we’re descendants of Tamil,Portuguese,Dutch, Irish,Scottish,English etc, or so called Sinhala, we have left the land of our birth. What I have learned is that,we still yearn for the great times we and our parents enjoyed in those days when we were young. That’s why we rely on the Internet for information about Sri Lanka. I’m sure whether in Australia,Canada or in the UK etc we all feel nostalgic about our mother land.🇱🇰🇺🇸🇬🇧. Life in foreign countries, may be comfortable to a certain extent, but are we really HAPPY?.? Are we really CONTENT..?? That’s the almighty question. Today I read on the Internet, that over 58,000 have obtained dual citizenship in SL between 2015 - 2020. People still want to have a foothold in SL 🇱🇰 . Materially the WESTERN countries are fine. But where spiritually, socially , the camaraderie etc are concerned we’re are missing our Mother Land. That’s my honest assessment. Sorry if I have offended anyone.😢

Don and Dona are titles given by the Portuguese traders who traded with spice merchants of Sinhala origin. For over 500 years Don ,Dona were continued by those families. By the 1980s most people abandoned the two titles. The two titles mean , mahaththaya, Nona.

Though "Burgher" is a Dutch word for a citizen, in Sri Lanka we don't differentiate between those of part Dutch or Portuguese descent. So the collective term Burgher is used for all.
