  • How to Fix a Cracked Frame:
    TFLD: I was looking for a quick cheap fix. I recommended to use a specialist, but i could not afford it.
    This is my FAVE bike, I recently found a crack in the back seat post and after googling I tough there was no hope. I took it to my local welding shop in Stoke Newington, they said they would "Stick a blob on it" and it would be as good as new. So that's what I did.
    Fixing the bike and making this little video was a fun little Sunday project. Hope you like it.
    I would also like to say, I am aware of services that will fix a cracked frame properly, but they are really expensive. This is 100% a hack job and it does not look pretty. But I live in London, if your bike looks nice, it gets stolen...

    Ouch! watching this in 2019. To anyone watching this and considering a similar bicycle repair, and if you care about your frame, don't have it done in the way this video shows. Bring it to a professional frame builder. You will be surprised how many there are out there. Problems with the way shown in this video: The welder is using a MIG welder, which is the wrong type for this application. TIG is the proper type of weld for this type of joint. TIG is used for finer detail and preferred for bicycle tubing which in most cases only has a 1mm wall thickness. And lastly an angle grinder for clean up.. If you bring your frame to a place for a repair and the guy pulls out the angle grinder, RUN!

    • @DocBlasto
      @DocBlasto 5 лет назад +2

      It looks like he gouged it pretty badly with the angle grinder. It could have been done much more cleanly with a file. I wouldn't be surprised if it cracks again.

      This is a brazed frame. You can see it in the first shots , a copper-like glow... going over this with a MIG welder and saying its you favorite frame is just brutal in my eyes..

    You should have had the ends of the crack drilled out to stop further spreading of the "tear" before getting it welded. Now there's a chance that it will re-open at those places.

      @@comdrive3865 cracks around the seatpost most likely due to having incorrect size seatpost, not enough seatpost is in the frame. I have seen people clamp the seatpost so hard then they stick a screwdriver to in the ears of the lug to open it but end up making a crack down the middle of the seatpost. If you have a small crack its best to drill a hole where the crack is which stops it from spreading

    to repair cromoly bike frame, you should use cromo filler (er80) or 312 stainless filler. I repaired a bike frame using 312 stick electrodes.

    The weld adds character :^) I know a guy who rode this 80's Bianchi Pista and had the seat tube cracked away from the bottom bracket because he didn't know there was a pool of water at the bottom of his frame. Pretty bummed out about it, but he's getting it fixed up now by a specialist now. -$1000

      Many people swear on it i´d say stay away from it. Sure that was not the best repairjob with the welding but with epoxy at this position it would last maybe a few weeks to months before cracking again that weld will last longer for sure. If it had been mine i would have reinforced it but if you can´t do that repair in your own workshop it will cost you quite a bit more than 8 bucks. Braizing only is no option with this crack unless you are a real braizing artist with that crack you can´t go around welding. I personally would have inserted a copper tube (steel weld does not stick to copper) the size of the seatpost, drilled a bit into the ends of the crack to prevent spreading, weld the crack, smooth it down, make a steel sleve with a few holes in it to go around the cracked area, braize it to the seattube with silver and then weld it through the holes i drilled before (if i welded around the edges it it would just weaken the whole seattube and cause new weak spots for cracks), reream the seattube and repaint the bike. If you have done a repair like this by a guy charging 15 bucks an hour you are in for at least 45 bucks plus material cost. Not effective at all. In case anyone red through this: Don´t try welding steel frames at home if you are unexperienced because often you will just melt holes into your frame.
