- Time To Move Your Cucumber Seedlings On! Growing Cucumbers Part 2. Cucumbers are one of the most popular garden crop of all time. They are easy to grow, but do not transplant well, so you have to move the plugs on specifically when those first true leaves pop out.
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, your growing season is finite, and often too short to properly ripen Cucumbers that are directly seeded into the garden. Starter plants are expensive, so you need a plan! The plan is simple, start your own Cucumber seeds indoors, now during the winter, to get a head start on spring planting!
In this video, I show you how to move those Cucumber seedlings on from the plug trays to 4 inch standard nursery pots, so that you can be ready for spring, and have as many Cucumber starter plants as your garden can handle. The method works for any variety, and the strategies mentioned here are useful to beginners and veteran green thumbs alike!

I love your videos. They're short, well-edited, and informative. That said, cukes and squash are so fickle. so like you, I handle with care. To avoid transplant shock, I never re-planted, but usually, start them in the larger pots. Your method could help ease any pressure under the grow lights, though.
PS. This year, I'm experimenting with soil blocks on my tender-rooted plants that don't transplant well, like cucurbits, peas... even nasturtiums and zinnia, which I grow for the bees. So far, so good. And they're more space efficient than the larger pots and the air-pruning ends up allowing the plant to grow large without getting root-bound. Keeping my fingers crossed.

This is really helpful. My cucumber plants are slowing down now after the “baby” leaves came out. And I think it’s the size of the cell that’s hindering them. I didn’t know how quickly they like to grow

Good info about that true leaf appearing first before transplant. I wasn't sure when I translated various ceilings but some made it some didn't and I was wondering what the conditions were that happened like that. It definitely could have been that I transplanted some too early
Yep, quite likely. True leaves indicate time....time enough for roots to develop. You need enough roots to withstand the rigors of transplanting to minimize the shock. :-)
Thank you, I’ve struggled to get my cucumber seedlings to germinate and I’ve never been able to grow very big ones. They usually don’t produce fruit or just rot.

Just found your videos! Loving them!! A question, to water the seeds in the plug tray for 2hrs. Do you remove extra water after 2hrs? From there on, do I need to water it always from the bottom? Thanks!
Hey, thanks for watching xue! For watering the trays...with the 2L of water, after 2 hours the soil should have soaked it ALL up. If there's still water standing in the bottom, I would probably just drain it off, yes. And always water the seedlings from the bottom. So much easier! :-)
I'm a new gardener and I transplanted two of my cucumbers before the third leaf grew but I still have four in there cells will the two I transferred early survive? Thanks for any input.

Man I wish I seen these videos in my search last week. I randomly picked up a jiffy dome with pellets, to try growing a few veggies, my cucumbers are further along since last fridays sow. Last night I moved them to a 5x5 pot but didn't compress any of the potting mix, will that mess up or slow down progress?
No, you should be ok man. The reason I compress is two fold. One, the mix is so light and fluffy, it depresses on its own over time and soon you're left with a half pot of soil. The other is to get rid of air pockets that can sometimes dry out a root. Its rare, but I've seen it happen. But.....if you don't compress....99% of the time, it still works out fine, don't stress!
So, do you get all or most of your plants started and then put them all out on your stand at once? I am trying to figure out how to work that out. Do you wait til after the last frost date (keep them inside til then) ? But there are some plants that can go in the ground before then. Hmmmm, perplexing! Lol. Hey, incredible growth on the channel! Yay! I knew it would. One sad day you are gonna have hundreds of thousands of subs like the other big channels and then not as many awesome responses to comments/ questions. Don’t get me wrong, I hope that for you, you deserve it. I am just gonna have to get a beefed up carrier pigeon to take my questions to you lol. Alllll the way across the continent 😉. Hey Mary, I usually start most of my starters over a 3-week period in January. ALL of my starters are done indoors and then slowly hardened off in April as the weather permits. This is for sale plants as well as plants that are kept to grow myself either in the garden or in containers around the property. I RARELY direct seed anything, even historically-poor transplanters like corn, canteloupe, watermelons, etc, and especially the plants that require/benefit from an extended growing season. This is for multiple reasons....1) like we mentioned, if the plant needs a certain period of warm weather to actually produce viable fruit, then they NEED a head start going into the garden, 2) waiting and waiting for plants to germinate and grow is lost production. For the 6-8 weeks that a crop can take to get to the point of what a start plant is already at, that garden bed/area would have produced its OWN crop, easily. Its why a single bed here can have 3-4 crops in a single 12 month period! and 3) you can cherry pick the best genetics/individual plants to grow....that's huge. Gives your garden the advantage and can determine whether or not you have good success.....or MAXIMUM success!

What do i do if my sprouts (its been 4 or 5 days since seeding ) are gettin to long for the trays. I do t see a real leaf yet but they are getting so big! Should i take them off of the heating mat and into the sun? Or should i wait until they sprout the true leaf for sun/grow light?
Love this video. Quick question, why do you always start transplanting with the strongest plants first? Would it not be better and less disrupting to the other plants if you just transplanted row for row?
Great question, and thanks for watching! I always do the strongest first for two reasons. 1) If I run out of room, I ensure that only the best ones have been moved on! and 2) taking the biggest ones out actually makes the trays easier to deal with as the bulk of foliage starts to get removed. Mine are just getting their true leaves, but i planted 2 per cube. Will it be okay to keep them outside when i put them in their 4" containers next week ? It gets 50 at night and 70 days here in southern California

Hi Elsie...I do. It doesn't take long though. There becomes a point where the soil is fully saturated and it can't take up any more moisture.

Is there anything specific to be looking for when purchasing grow lights? I’ve had past experiences where seedlings get leggy by the window, even when I rotate them every day and I thought grow lights would fix this issue
Hey Ali, look for wavelength output in the 600-700nm portion of the spectrum.. In other words, a proper grow light as opposed to just regular LED house lights
A gentle breeze from a small fan for a few hours s day will stop your plants from getting leggy. The breeze will cause the plants to release chemicals that make them grow slower and stronger.

Greetings my friend . . . my zucchini plants are even taller than the cucumber plants in the starter trays. They are 9 inches tall with thick stems and just started their first leaf. When transplanting to the 4 inch pots, can I twirl the stem around in the soil to leave about 3 inches above the soil?? I noticed that the zucchini plants have a nice root system and have the roots stretching through the starter tray cells and into the water below. Any advice would help. Thanks.
Hey Richard! Careful with the Zucchini stems, they are quite brittle. But yes, you can definitely bury them...just like tomatoes and peppers, Zucchinis send out adventitious roots from the stems....so bury it right up to the first set of leaves. You'll get an instant epic root system that way! :-)
I have a cucumber plant and clearly need to repot it on to a bigger pot but I don’t know what type of soil or fertilizer I should use
Just go with regular potting or container mix and don't worry about fertilizing right away. Give it a week or so in the new pot, or even longer to let the roots find their way a bit.
Can you try corn in containers?
I'm new to gardening, but why not just sow them directly into the larger pots?

At this point, do you still cover them with a plastic dome? Should you ventilate the dome? Leave them uncovered?
Hey Randy, great question. I actually pull the dome off once the first real leaf appears. That 3rd leaf in the center that looks different than the other two. Once you see those, you know the dome can come off and the plants are set up! Cheers man.

Hi, I just moved my seedlings from cells to bigger pots and half of them look like they are dying. Major wilting.
They were in the sun for 3 hours and temperature was roughly 65 F. I don't have enough light inside and I'm paranoid about leaving grow lights on while I'm away most of the day. I purchased light bulbs from hardware store. Idk what is happening. They were somewhat ok inside, but after 3 hours outside they started wilting much worse. What comes to your mind?
Supposed to harden them off 1 hour per day then the next day 2 hours and so on until full sun ready but really you should get some grow lights I’ve had cheap to expensive so you would not have to worry about leaving them on while gone besides you can juss turn the lights off if you ever decide to leave

Yes, they are called the seed leaves and are the first to emerge on all "dicot" plants.

My cucumber seedlings have sprouted and are now about 6 inches with the cotyledons and still no first leaf. I planted my seeds in the starter tray on Feb. 13, 2021. They are truly amazing with thick stems. However, some are beginning to tip over. When can I expect the first leaf to appear before transplanting to 4 inch pots??

Well my cucumbers are still growing and are now 7 inches with the cotyledons and still no first leaf. Mostly all are tipping over. Can I transplant to the 4 inch pots now?? I will bury the plant as deep as possible. Also, can I use a different potting mix (Miracle Grow Potting Mix) than the initial potting mix (NewEarth Vortex). I do not want to damage the plants. Please advise.
@@richardl7565 hey Richard... I would get the plants more light. At this point, with them falling over, I think you have to replant them deep like that. You can use potting soil, just don't overly fertilize at this time.
Thank you for your immediate attention. I will transplant to the 4 inch pots. I can't wait to get them in the garden soon. I have already planted my lettuce(s), carrots, peas, and spinach seeds directly into the dirt in my backyard garden yesterday. I live in Austin, Texas and boy was I glad that I waited as I was planning on planting the seeds back on Feb. 12 when the temperature reached 80 degrees. Then the brutal winter storm hit with sub-freezing temperatures. Thanks again.

Why not treat them like you suggest with watermelons, which also do not like transplanting, by starting them in bideogradeable pots?
I find a couple varieties that not only tolerate transplanting.... But also send out adventitious roots! It's amazing!

I truly did something wrong with my heirloom cucumbers, bcz they’re tall, but leaves are nowhere near as big as yours, and I planted seeds in jiffy lube peat moss trays I bought from Walmart on March 3.

Yellow sticky traps and diligent manual removal. :-)
How do you prevent bugs using soil in the house?
You can sterilize it in the oven or you can use yellow sticky traps. Hydrogen peroxide works as well.

Why don’t you seed it straight in the big pot?
Time, space, cost, materials......seeds are cheap. Seed them in the big pots and one doesn't take, huge waste of resources of the course of hundreds of plants. Plus, I can cherry pick the best specimens along the way, ensuring the best crop for when its time to plant in the garden.

Why not start in bigger pot to start with it's not good distrurbing the roots no need of changing pot
Space. 100 plugs takes up a FRACTION of the space as 100 bigger pots.
Seriously that big in only a week? Most of what i plant indoors from seed are barely sprouts in that amount of time
