I only saw Gary for the first time recently. He might be specifically talking about Britain but what he's saying applies everywhere.
I'm Australian and he could easily be describing Australia,
Our government just pulled $38 Billion out of thin air during COVID at one point, with no explanation of where it came from or an explanation of how they decided why anyone got any of it. A few weeks ago when the 2021/22 publicly listed companies had their reporting season it was announced that the CEOs of the ASX 200 had a new record HIGH average salary of $9.5 million. That's a wage bill of $1.9 billion for 200 people. That doesn't include all the other executives, board members or their bonuses.
Now I know where our $38 Billion went.

Great video. I do think a major problem is the lack of understanding of economics among the general public, as so few study this topic during their education. This means that economic experts are able to bamboozle their audience with jargon. Reminds me of the priestly class during medieval times who where able to do the same when talking about religious matters as they were the only ones who read Latin and had access to sacred texts. We need a reformation in economics so ordinary people are able to make a contribution.

Great explanation on why our economic system is deliberately being set up to collapse by printing money in the majority to fuel non productive asset bubbles, that has created the wealth inequality we see and seen the rich get far richer over the past 4 decades of financial deregulation after Bretton Woods ended.

I'm an Australian engineer and I started looking into economics a few years back in frustration.
One of the problems I worked out is the education regarding economics. No matter what college anyone goes to and even if there are a couple of rogue professors teaching stuff like MMT at the core of the curriculums is the same Milton Freidman neoliberal free market economics that was the basis of Reaganomics and Thatcherism.
Its a big giant echo chamber and its why so many people around the world feel that democracy is failing because no matter who's voted into power they do the same economic stuff. Its because all the advisers are pumped out of the same schools with the same curriculums with the same text books.
One thing I didn't know was how the top banks take those few top students and hide them. I knew they recruited top shelf maths kids and computer kids but I didn't know about the top economics kids *or that they hide them.*

There are some exceptions to the rule about economists growing up in poverty, Mark Blyth being a good example of someone who has made good predictions on finance and politics, and well worth a read.
Yanis Varoufakis is is an academic who has called out the fallacies in teaching economics, and there are plenty of videos of him on YT
Joe Stiglitz has also written widely on inequality and capitalism.
I guess these people are the exception rather than the rule

It's all completely corrupt and bless Gary - this guy is out there like an island on his own at the moment. I have contacted people who I think would help to get in touch with Gary - James O'Brien and Martin Lewis. I can really hear what you are saying about people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds not having much of a choice about pursuing the academic career or city bank career. Internship or apprenticeship salaries are so low for certain industries in the UK that certain types of jobs will only attract people from wealthier backgrounds and not necessarily talented people. I feel as though the content in this video is a consequence of neoliberalism. The government having very little intervention with regards to the cost of living crisis, this makes the poor poorer and the rich richer. I think there is a conflict of interest for the government to resolve this as that would mean having to go against their own philosophies of the free market ideology.

Having worked on the fringes of the UK media industry for over 20yrs, I can definitely say it's an industry where talent is not necessary when you come from the right background. It's more of a status 'club' or a hobby for those who don't have to earn a living, rather than commercial product manufacture. It's also a magnet for entitled, self righteous narcissists, which probably better explains why it's the way it is.
Listening to you explain economics in such an open & honest way really helps me to better understand what is going on now. I knew the numbers didn't add up (no un intended), but I didn't know why. Keep exposing the truth. It's greatly appreciated.

Gary your videos are thought provoking, insightful but terrifying. I recently read a quote "every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets" credited to a Paul Batalden. Whilst it was made within the context of healthcare is does seem to relate nicely to what you are talking about. It is in a book by Professor Gwyn Bevan titled "how did Britain come to this?" Gary I think you may like it !

    Economics isn't broken, it's fixed.
The golden rule: He who has the gold, rules.
It's not just about money, it's about power, and it's about the rules of the game the powerful play by. It can all be summed up in one word: capitalism. Until we organize ourselves enough to be able to challenge capitalists for power, things will get worse. And not just "the economy." It's now possible for global warming to cause feedback loops in our lifetimes. The capitalists who caused global warming have decided to speed up the warming on all fronts. They are playing by the rules of the game of capitalism. The economists the capitalists buy have a phrase for the suffering and death and destruction capitalist exploitation causes: externalities. Essentially, they don't count them. They also don't really take money/finance into account in their equations that are supposed to describe "the economy," but that's another story...There is a similar euphemism to "externality" in war: "collateral damage." Both lies for power and profit. Both deadly. And capitalists are behind all of it. In 500 years of capitalism there have been reforms, but it always reverts back to monopoly, concentration of power - which always leads to mass poverty and suffering, and of course wealth inequality. The only way forward is to educate and organize at the same time. Education alone will not stop anything. I'm not discounting the information Gary is imparting, but in order to be able to act on it, we need to be as organized and effective as the capitalists are.

Serving the rich is literally their job, maybe not officially but that is the reality. And the economists in academia are the ones who can be relied upon to justify the policies that billionaires want.

People keep voting for either Neoliberals or their scarecrows puppets the far-right so why should they care ? Working as intended for them. Whenever a government that works truly in the interest of the common people is elected they are subject to slander, economic sanctions, and eventually a staged coup. We have clear examples of this in South America (Allende, Chavez, Morales...), or even with Ghadafi.

  • @blindstagehand

Bro, I hope your talking to Yannis Varoufakis. The Economy is The Congress. Democracy, the rule of the people, is based on three pillars 1. Everyone has an equal vote. 2. Voting is not obligatory, ie veto (You may have to vote, but none of the above must be an option). 3. The way you vote is private. Voting with ballots is for suckers. Voting with money is a much better idea. That does not preclude diversity of wealth or the opportunity to achieve anything you want in life. Social Democracy is achieved with uncinditional basic income, an equal dividend of tax wealth for everyone, rich and poor alike. Political Democracy, however, can be augmented with a Conditional Income which must be spent in an Ultruistic Congressional Crowd Fund. In this Crowd Fund, everyone has 1. an equal amount of money 2. do not have to take part. 3. are anonymous in their choice. This is how you can use money to vote instead of ballots and make it democratic. By understanding economies as congressional, either partially in the case of UBI, or totally in the case of CBI, we can see we don't really live in a democracy at all, because the power of decision making is not ballots, but money. If we can demand an augmentation to our political system with an Alturistic Congressional Crowd Fund we could transition to a brighter more altruistic future full of potential and opportunity. Let me use an example for the UK, Foreign Aid. Create an Ultruistic Congressional Crowd fund for Foreign Aid, fill it with the campaigns of applicants for this aid, split the budget for foreign aid equally and proportionally as a credit into each citizen's Crowd Fund Account and let the people spend their way to the democratic decision on how that foreign aid money should be spent.
Am I reaching you? The Pople are The Government. Panta Rei xxx

you can't change this system from the top-to-bottom. Need to start from the bottom-up. I suggest starting at the level of labor unions and fighting for the working ppl rights. And that's a place where ppl like you can make a noticable change. If you are really interested in changing the system, you would do this. Technology has gone a long way up to now so there is no reason why 6-hours work day shouldn't be a norm. It already has been over a century since 8 hours workday was invnted.

When he says the interest rates stay at zero indicating a bad economy what does he mean? Right now aren't interest rates rising along with inflation and low growth. Isn't high interest rates a sign of a bad economy, not low ones?
