I am not Capeverdean, but I cannot fail to repudiate those who criticize Mayra Andrade for "sounding more commercial", singing in English, going away from traditional roots, etc. Those people, even unconsciously, try to chain every artist to their national stereotypes, as if all Spanish music had to be flamenco, all Scottish music had to use bagpipes, etc. I admire people who are above those small-minded notions, and even more when they are "black" (in the American concept), for whom the pressure to conform to a certain kind of stereotype and culture is so pervasive and reductionist. Mayra Andrade has the right to do exactly what she wishes. If the decided to become a specialist in Icelandic sagas, I would be 100% with her. As Icelanders have every right to perform Amazonian art, if they so wish...
I absolutely agree with you. The problem begins when for an artist to reach the big recording labels, publicity and overall reach, they have to 'conform' to some requisitions, one of them ussually being the language barrier. To prove my point, a example from my own country: in Brasil, the big 'pop' radios play mostly music song in english, being the portuguese language 'restricted' to MPB, and other tipically brasilian rithms. Of course this language option is to the artist to take, but to achieve some audience, it is a choice to make.
Tefilo Braga Well said. She spread very well capeverdean culture, I know in a better way Cape Verde now better thanks to her music. She was born in Cuba, grown in France, her parents are capeverdeans, she's been in Brasil, and the UK (well, just need to see wikipedia or her youtube videos to notice about it). --> That's a lesson of multiculturalism, and I'm quite sure she knows how important is to protect each culture in the world. So, telling her off about not using cape verdean creole it's kind of innocent.
greeting from mauritius,,am a mauritian but frankly said i love all males females singers of cape verdean, even though i dnt understand,i do understand english french :)
Lyrics: Babe's gone away, just for a while I'm sitting down here wondering why, oh, why Babe's gone away, so far away I'm sitting down wondering what to say Babe's gone away just for a while I'm sitting down here wondering why, oh, why Babe's gone away, so far away And I'm sitting down wondering what to say We used to call it love Used to call it love We used to call it love Used to call it love Babe's gone away now from the shore Here I am crying out for more Baby's gone, yeah, heading north Let me down feeling blue and cold We used to call it love Used to call it love We used to call it love Used to call it love Love, love De maio ochum pudisda tanto Ausencia tchal um vazio tao grand Sem rumo el anda txeu temp cretxeu Bai xpiá se liberdade longe dess mund, oh Baby's gone away, gone through the night Lying down, wondering why and how Is there anything I could have done? Is there anything I should have done before? We used to call it love Used to call it love We used to call it love Used to call it love We used to call it love Used to call it love
Although i partially agree with you, I most certainly believe that she'll continue shining like the Capo Verdean sun, unique and heart-warming. She has the soul, and that's one thing impossible to vanish. She'll be back better than ever, every single time.
Stupenda voce, great backing vocals, wonderful musicians in the band: i discover Miss MAYRA ANDRADE in these days of July 2014 and i'm very happy to listen this MUSIC Delight !!! Bella e Brava MAYRA !!... ;-) mm'65
love this whole album, listen all the time, in my car, at home, love her voice. But I wish I knew where to buy the blouse she wears in Ilha de Santiago video, I love the colors + design on it!!!Am definitely going to learn some Portuguese so I can sing ALL the lyrics along with the CD!!
don't worry and be sure to catch a glimpse at her new album coming this october. I've only heard one song, and it's my favorite so far of all that she's done. It's just perfect, and i assume you'll like it too, since it has that capo verde vibe to it.
Love the song, love the singer. And love how the back-up dancers look like a flash-mob photo-bombing the video. But why didn't the blonde hook up with the dude at the end? That's what was being set up. I feel like you sank your own ship before it launched! lol Great video! ❤
English is my first language but I enjoy her singing in Portuguese a lot more , she's still amazing in English but i just love her music in Portuguese.
The hypocrisy of the people complaining about the language used in this song is disgusting. If the song was in creole only, you'd be praising it, but since it's mostly in English, all of a sudden you have a problem with it. But why didn't you complain when she sang in French (Comme s'il en pleuvait, Mon carrousel, La Javanaise)? You're acting like English is some kind of talentless form of language, while most of the songs you listen to are in English, or at least some of your favorite singers/bands are (like the Beatles, whom she'd already covered in her last album, with "Michelle". This same argument answers the complaints about "going pop/commercial": there's nothing wrong with being commercial as long as it has quality)! Mayra has a multicultural background, and if she wants to embrace different languages and cultures in her music, who are you to say "all languages, all genres, but pop and English"?! If you have a prejudice against English/pop, that's your problem! Spare us your negativity, disguised as "purist".
I think that the hypocrisy is not saying anything wrong just because she's from capeverde. everytime we criticize someone from there people start saying that we're promoting negativity.Believe it or not i praise her for showing this country to the world, i think she's definitely a great singer, interpreter etc but this now ??? this is definitely commercial stuff, this has nothing to do with language, comme s'il en pleuvait as you mentioned it was amazing. I think that Mayra has so much to offer, she has the right to make money or to get attention from the international public but don't deny the truth.
Tesfes Meletoi It's curious how you say "this is definitely commercial stuff... don't deny the truth.", as if that's revealing some flaw! I need not deny it because being "commercial" means nothing in itself, it's only bad if the song lacks quality. I mentioned the language because that was the main argument used to label the song commercial, and since I consider this song amazing in all its composition (just like the "non-commercial" ones from Mayra), I'm positive the only thing making people biased is the language. Here's a list of commercial artists/bands, that are undeniably good: The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Queen, Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin...
Ivan Almeida you can call me purist to me it is a flaw when someone so much talented does a song as common as this one. but i can say that the positive part is that it is a good way to advertise her name.
Ivan Almeida...You are so on point, Bro. That she decided to sing in English has not made her less Cabo Verdian.... So can people just stop being prejudiced. Our languages should not scatter us but bring us together.
Mayra Andrade is a very talented Capeverdean singer!!! Love my country and my Capeverdean Creole language!!!
Português é lindo!
You guys are Portuguese-Cape Verdeans. Different Portuguese culture.
Tefilo Braga Amen to that...

Lyrics:
Babe's gone away, just for a while
I'm sitting down here wondering why, oh, why
Babe's gone away, so far away
I'm sitting down wondering what to say
Babe's gone away just for a while
I'm sitting down here wondering why, oh, why
Babe's gone away, so far away
And I'm sitting down wondering what to say
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
Babe's gone away now from the shore
Here I am crying out for more
Baby's gone, yeah, heading north
Let me down feeling blue and cold
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
Love, love
De maio ochum pudisda tanto
Ausencia tchal um vazio tao grand
Sem rumo el anda txeu temp cretxeu
Bai xpiá se liberdade longe dess mund, oh
Baby's gone away, gone through the night
Lying down, wondering why and how
Is there anything I could have done?
Is there anything I should have done before?
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
We used to call it love
Used to call it love
