Big Muff and TurboRAT with a Boss GEB-7 to bring the bottom end back? If this is true, which is first, Muff or RAT. I will need to test but I think I can get that sound RAT then Muff. And which year or version of Muff?
Its way more the part than the signal path. I say this because I'm currently getting the sound with NO PEDALS. Just the Ampeg Head and Cab in the Fractal with the power amp turned up for distortion. For live I prefer a bit less gain for I can be more dynamic with KS. But yes, on FP, it was the bass guitar pedal board into an ampeg SVT head and Cab. Pedal board had Muff, Rat, and Boss Bass Eq pedal. I do not remember the settings, but it sounds like both fuzzes and the EQ are on.
I am so GRATEFUL I found this channel! Thanks for doing this! You’re the reason I finally let go of the illusion that I had to mix on a console to make things have depth and be more punchy than Mike Tyson. Again, sir.. thank you!
I'm just realizing that I wasn't very clear that I actually put up two episodes today. Here's Episode 2 about mixing with Templates: ruclips.net/video/iGUGZIQSLV4/видео.html
I saw Failure for the first time on October 21, 1996 at the Warfield in San Francisco as the opening act for Tool. Since then I’ve been a rabid fan of everything you’ve had your hands in: On (Caught you live at Slims for the self title tour), Year of the Rabbit and especially Secrets of the Lost Satellite. The sound you deliver, sonically, is second to none. Thank god for the Failure reunion, you guys absolutely killed at aftershock in Sacramento a few years back and the releases are so goddam good. I’ll shut it up now, but I hope to god you never stop making music.
Thanks for making this channel. I'm a huge fan of all your works and always wondering how it was engineered, while the music itself has shaped my musical taste and understanding until now. I have always amazed of how you mix your own (Failure) live show! Hope you'll share content about those stuff too in the future. Good luck and long live this channel.
Thanks for the kind words. To clarify, I do not mix what the audience hears at Failure shows. I mix what the band hears. The 3 of us have separate in-ear mixes that I control. Mixing front of House or FOH would be very difficult as the PA and room acoustics have a massive impact on balances and Eq approaches. We have a talented and trusted FOH engineer named David Gaume that we try and book whenever possible!
Sianspheric thank you! I actually did the whole thing myself. I mean filmed, edited, obviously didn’t take many of the stills of myself, thank you to Priscilla for those! But I actually enjoy video editing almost as much as mixing.
I’d like to know how apocalypse blooms was put together it seems like it has the most tracks on a failure record. Super dense. Every time I hear it with some good headphones I hear something new
"Apocalypse Blooms" is such a cool song. You can hear the influence of The Cure so much in those verse guitar leads. YotR used to open their set with a cover of "Plainsong" and it was so killer.
Damn this channel is gonna be rad. Fantastic Planet is probably one of my most listened to albums. Another Space Song still sends me to that far away place whenever I listen to it. Gives me chills still to this day. That album is up there with Siamese Dream, Downward is Heavenward, Head Trip in Every Key, Spilt Milk, .. all the best 90s rock albums, and also one of the best ENGINEERED albums.
As a huge fan of Failure and a mixer myself, this is like an early Christmas present! Subscribed and can't wait to see what videos you make, Ken! Thanks for starting a channel!
YESSS!!! Why am I just now seeing this?? My favorite mixing artist that's ever been!!!. Nobody makes a bass guitar sound better. PERIOD. No one. Love you Ken!
Failure is my favorite band and it's not an exaggeration to say it changed my life and my outlook on music. I'm a better musician and audio engineer because of Ken. Thank you for everything!
Super excited for this channel Ken! Saw you perform with Failure back in March, and me and my fiancé both wholeheartedly agree that you guys were the greatest live show we have ever seen! I can’t wait to hear about the breakdowns of some of my favorite Failure songs, and hopefully even some songs from Replicants, On, YOTR and also your solo record! You are super chill and relaxing to listen to when you talk lol I’ll definitely be tuning in whenever you drop a new video!
I wish Ken could teach me everything he knows. I have a lot of creativity I want to get out and I don't know where or how to start. I spent my life drawing and painting, but I recently realized it's always been about sound and visuals. I think this new series is going to be a huge inspiration for me, even if I never figure out what to do with it. Thank you for this!
Ken! Dude, I’m soo stoked about your channel! I’ve been listening to your work since the start and consider you quite the humble genius. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us! - sincerely
I just found this channel today and it's like Christmas all over again. I am so excited for this. I love Failure, I didn't even know you were in Year of the Rabbit when I saw you play Las Vegas but immediately was hooked from that show and have been a huge fan of everything you have been involved with ever since. As a drummer I have always admired how perfectly you record/mix drums (and everything else). Back before I knew anything about compression I thought you were a Golden God of mixing. Everything pops out clear with intensity in your mixes. I hope you pick apart some of your old recordings. It would be a amazing to learn about the gear and techniques used to make your old recordings and why or what was going through your mind when creating that stuff. Thanks for making this channel, wow, looks to be a great 2020 ahead!
I was always happy as a listener that Ok Computer and Fantastic Planet had such a good sound, even though, as a listener I have no idea about the hard work done by the recording and mixing.
I had the pleasure of putting out an album with my coworkers at our local music gear shop. We were all greatly influenced by Failure. A couple of us even had the pleasure of flying out from Louisiana to be front and center at your reunion show. Lol you'll notice us being the only ones jumping up and down on video captured near the sound board. We were super impressed with the incredible tones you guys managed to put out. Listening back to the Fantastic Planet live album makes me feel like I'm back at El Rey every time. Excited to see everything about this channel unfold!
Just discovered this channel, Ken thank you so much for taking the time to share this information with us. We are so unbelievably lucky as fans to get to see how you produce and work on your projects from behind the scenes. Again THANK YOU!! The guitar tone on Undone is some of the best guitar tone ive heard to date, and i still chase that signal path. Cant wait to see the videos explaining how you get some of the sounds you do.
@@KenAndrewsMusic Army of Anyone album (and mix) were great, Ken. Would love to hear more in depth anecdotes and details on that project. As far as a supergroup goes, definitely a solid union of talents and deft sonics.
Man I'm so stoked for this show. I've seen Failure SOO many times and still say that you are the best sounding live band I've ever heard. Met all of you as well and such good people. I vote for apocalypse blooms breakdown btw. Hell my whole youtube channel is kinda dedicated to you guys!!
I like mixing too. That's why I like electronic music, like Royksopp and Boards of Canada. Those guys are masters of their craft, each in their own wheelhouse. Looking forward to the podcast.
Holy shit, literally every time I listen to a record mixed by this man I wish he could teach me and now as I scroll aimlessly through youtube, HERE YOU ARE! Merry Xmas to me! Thank you so much Ken, looking forward to learning from you!
Sure , I’ll be comment 191 ! Ken , I am very much looking forward to your videos! I happened to catch your big guitars vs big drums vid, and I knew right away , I dig your style. The simplicity of showing how the ssl bus comp can put a mix well on its way, was brilliant! I hope you do a video about phase. I can’t begin to tell you how many times have I started a drum mix, and get everything in phase, only to later eq , or high pass something , and wreck my phase corrections. That was a hard lesson to learn early in my beginnings of mixing. I’d love to see how you begin your drum mix.
Never realized until now that we’re not so different and that gives me hope. I have a degree in filmmaking and have been producing and editing, professionally, for the past 10 years but feel that my true calling has always been music. I’ve been writing and recording for almost 20 years now but have never really worked in the industry. I love the process of recording and mixing, thus the reason why I’m so glad that you started this channel. Hoping to get more music out in 2020. Thanks for sharing!
Kick ass. Can’t wait to watch your stuff and learn about your process. I’m a big fan so I’m just excited to see and hear anything that any of you guys do. The Year of the Rabbit music in the background was a nice surprise.
I came here looking for guidance on my band's EP for mix, came away feeling like I paid for a Masterclass. This is such a generous portal. I'm also obsessed with Failure and your solo work. Complete awe at all of this.
Followed Failure and your solo work/bands for ages, and always fascinated to hear more about how such stirring music comes to be. Loved what you said about how when you get a mix right how it pulls all the elements of a song together and grabs you - if something gives me goosebumps its usually because its been mixed perfectly and resonates with me in unique way. Your new album had a lot of these moments! Can't wait to see the next video Ken :)
Ken is a really amazing recording artist and producer, but the passion for mixing is unparalleled. Very cool show. Looking forward to learning a lot more about mixing in the series. Would be interesting to learn how new technology and experience helped with each progressive album.
Thank u so much 4 not dying my #1 rock star God. Thank u 4 always staying relevant and true. And thank u 4 being as good or better than the greatest band ever, whoever that may be. I will love u and blow u up from here to death.

Love the new channel! Any chance we could get a list of the music used in this video? I thought I knew all the songs you've done, there were a few clips I did not recognize! Met you and Failure at VIP in New Orleans on the recent tour, thanks so much for taking the time!
Wow, 1k subscribers already! Humbled and inspired. Thank you.

I’m alarmed that none of the comments so far are saying “FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TELL US HOW YOU GOT THE BASS TONE ON HELIOTROPIC!!”
he just like.. ran it through a muff or something, man.
I don't actually know..
