  • Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a flowering plant in the genus Lathyrus in the family Fabaceae (legumes), native to Sicily, Cyprus, southern Italy and the Aegean Islands.
It was derived from the Geek word “lathyros” which means pulse or pea. “Odoratus” on the other hand is a Latin word that means fragrant. When it comes to floral language, the sweetpea flower is associated with delicate pleasure, blissful pleasure, departure, goodbye, thank you for the lovely time and adieu. It’s also well known that it is the birth flower of April.
The sweet pea is a flower that was discovered and really promoted by one man and that is Henry Eckford. What he did was actually develop the flower and to form it into the blossoming flower that people know and love today. From the point that he created the sweet pea, it really took off and became a flower that throughout the Victorian age was so well known. It is important to note that while the sweet pea is a flower that so many people love, it is definitely not one that should be eaten as it does have a neurotoxin in it. But, this flower actually symbolizes many thanks and offers people blissful pleasure.

Thank you for sharing the history of the sweet pea which is one of my favourite flowers .This is so my first flowers project for 2018 .I note that you use 60gsm which I can see is much lighter than 180gsm that I normally use .. Would you recommend that I find some 60gsm or might the heavier one work with some stretching Many thanks Sue

Thank you for your compliment, this is also my favorite flower, 60gsm crepe paper is the best suggestion for softness you can replace with german crepe paper or italy crepe paper with low weight (under 140gsm) is slightly stretched
