Peter Mansbridge and Barbara Frum. When I arrived in Canada, these were the trusted sources of news. I will never forget Ms Frum’s grilling of Iraq foreign minister during the first Gulf War.
People like that are gone from CBC. Want to reform and rebrand? How about putting in executives who can give a straight answer to a simple question?
I didn’t always agree with Peter Mansbridge, but I could always trust him.

Ditto. I am also an immigrant to Canada. I was thinking the other day about back when CBC had Rex Murphy, Rick Mercer, Michael Enright, etc......Don Cherry, who was unceremoniously dumped to pander to an activist class. That CBC is dead, and I am afraid we will never get it back, which makes me sad..

To me Peter Mansbridge was the CBC. It’s never felt the same since he retired and probably a big reason why Canadians have drifted away from the CBC. This interview brought home just how thoughtful and intelligent Mansbridge was, and how severely lacking the CBC has been in those qualities since his departure.

As a journalist I love Peter Mansbridge and he´s been a huge inspiration. I will never forget when I first immigrated to Canada, back in 2003. I rented a bedroom in a basement in Montreal, at a time when those were beautiful, cozy places in family homes, not the Airbnb shitholes we have these days. I turned on the small TV and watched Peter delivering the news. That´s E-X-A-C-T-L-Y it: I FELT I was in Canada. His calm, confident and reassuring voice was wonderful to watch... And I felt welcomed and included. I´ve long been a Canadian and nothing makes more proud than such beautiful moments and inspiring stories. Thank you Peter!!

I used to regularly watch the CBC for News and current events. Like Peter Mansbridge is saying it's completely lost its way in the last decade. Now I never watch the CBC unless it's some sort of special event. That's maybe once a year . Peter is right the CBC is trying to be everything to everyone and has no clear direction and does nothing well. It should have a focus on providing Canadian news to Canadians which is a relatively rare thing today. The place to start is a complete house cleaning of the upper management of the CBC and developing a long-term strategy of mainly being a extremely reliable Canadian based news source.

We do need the CBC, more than the misplaced views of the social media crowd (that includes RUclips) will have one believe, and it should SCREAM 'CBC', and do so consistently. Canada is no less under the same threat of being overcome by a barrage of American media- news or not. It's worse now than it's ever been, so it's still important.

I have suggestions. first off the cbc really needs to do more real journalism like questioning both sides rather then seemingly primarily puffing up the liberals. second stop censoring comment sections this is not the way to earn trust. third when you do the panel discussions please start to invite all people from all sides of the spectrum. as journalists you must question all sides there is a right and a left just cause you dont agree with some of them does not mean you shouldnt interview them thats your job to inform canadians not change there opinions on matters. I feel like the cbc used to be far more neutral in the past and now it just feels more like activism for liberal new ideas. Also maybe have streams where you guys talk to the audience in the chat or something like that

I'm a long time listener of CBC Radio.
When I was working in the Arctic 45 years ago CBC North was our only connection to the rest of the world..
I listened to the National Energy Program was announced.
    So much for my credentials.
CBC has always been a political football.
Usually pro Liberal Party, even when Conservatives were in power.
Which the CBC shouldn't have done, being pro any party I mean.
Then came the day living in Dawson Creek, BC, CBC Radio wasn't working very well. The French version was working great.
I called CBC and they had no plans to fix it.
I 'm trying to explain how CBC lost it's relevance to a lot of listeners, and viewers.
CBC was supposed to be Canada's broadcaster, a place to get news, emergency warnings and connect with fellow Canadians.
Somehow it morphed into what it is today, which I don't even know how to describe.
Self serving and self righteous I guess.
    Pushing some agendas.
When CBC funding was cut during the Harper era, there was a three day rant on CBC.
    Where is the rant today?

Sure "WE" can. As long as someone with morals and ethics is put in charge but since the CBC just appointed their own board of directors that will handle 100% of the hiring, so the current 100% liberal executives will now be replaced by a 100% liberal board, no one that will ever expose or end their corruption will be allowed in. So it is possible, but ridiculously improbable.

I agree with Mr. Mansbrige that CBC should be about Canada, and when I was young it was. Ever since Trudeau, we're told to only be ashamed of Canada. CBC produced and then shelved a history series abiut Canada shortly after Trudeau became PM. Now, CBC just produces sitcoms it hopes will get picked up by American markets, and that have no Canadian spirit or connection. Finally, hearing Mansbridge speak reminds me how much the quality of his voice likely helped build CBC an audience. Management at CBC doesn't seem to care about that subtle kind of product quality anymore.

  • @davidmcnamara8024

He's right. Many times I turn the radio on and within 1 minute I have to click it off. Way back 30 years ago CBC was enjoyable because there wasn't this political bent. CBC radio always spouts on with their preachy BS. I can not listen to it. I like the science on Saturday morning and The Debaters and As It Happens. Much of the other stuff is terrible. It just comes across as social engineering.
