This is amazing. I have some semi-modulars that I'm learning - the Grandmother being one - and it's been great. But this video really lifted the veil for me in terms of how versatile these are, and how bringing in external modules actually works in practice. I'm new to modular so this is quite exciting to say the very least.
This kinda thing is exactly why Im getting the gm for my first synth. It sounds great as is, and I can always buy some modular stuff later to add onto it for new sounds.
Your videos on the Grandmother have been very inspiring. I don't even own one, but you're just chock full of great patch ideas. Loved your video on patching a guitar through the grandmother too. Thanks.
These are the meat and potatoes tutorials everyone! Thank you my brother. And the Grandmother gets respect and is used in such a great way here. Peace Christo 👽
just love your videos. so much quality content packed in such a nice way, thanks for doing that! And yeah, you're a fucking good musician, you know that
Thanks for this. That was very interesting. I would love to hear examples of differentfilters run in parallel and or series each having its own envelope. I don't have any sort of synthesizer right now. Just can't afford set up like that. However, I am blind and all these digital synthesizers with menus are completely useless to me because I can't see the screen. But modules with knobs and switches and plugs would be usable. Thanks again.
Ive almost hit the buy button on multille Moog's over the years and idk whats made me hesitate but i finally got a great deal on a grandmother noir. Ive had a concept shoegaze-y solo project for years and as ive moved away from making other styles and focus more on this, ive been brainstorming and experimenting on blurring the lines between synthesis and a huge pedal board for my guitars and making a hybrid shoegaze style....i contemplated long and hard over what mono i want next versus whats going to give me best what i need in my budget. Always curious about this synth since its debut. Got one. I think i made a good choice with how deep it goes with modular or other semi mod synths.
Would you be open to making a video where you detach the Grandmother keyboard and sequencer/arpeggiator from the synth, and use them to play and sequence/arpeggiate outside gear? Would love to see the possibilities with that.
I actually tried that the other day! They worked pretty well, but it was a bit limited, I was hoping to use the SEM filter with the GM, but unfortunately the filter doesn't have an input on the patch panel, so you have to run the whole synth through the external input.
once upon a synth Interesting (and disappoint). I’m surprised the SEM filter doesn’t have an input patch. I wonder if the version of the SEM with the front panel patching does? It seems to have more patch points than the one with MIDI.
10:44 My bet is it's a voltage range issue. If so, you could fix it by feeding the clock to something that will let you attenuate and add/subtract DC, like Maths, Triatt, or (the one I have) Befaco A*B+C.
Great choices! I havent landed on one yet but I'm going to start with the grandmother and then maybe later pick up the minibrute 2s. My thinking behind that is the moog grandmother is a powerhouse of top tier sound and plenty of versatility. The minibrute may have an extra envelope and a couple things I cant remember but I dont think ill miss that since you have the ability to add extra things in as demonstrated in this video. The minibrute 2s has a phenomenal sequencer and other features I like but sound for me is priority #1, and features, effects, and other things can always be patched in. Both instruments are a great value, but that spring reverb and classic, full moog sound is unbeatable. Good luck!
Sweetwater has a deal going on now for a minibrute 2 or 2s with a 6U rackbrute, bag, and cables for $799. What a sweet setup, this makes things more difficult for me.
Can you use the mixer or mult in the Grandmother to mix two audio signals and send the output to the main output (with or without the filter or reverb involved)?
Hey man, just found your channel. Stylish, informative...awesome! Question: I'd like to get a hardware synth to learn and enjoy - particularly to use with my Touche and Omnisphere (with their new v 2.5 features). I recently tried the Prophet 6 and loved the warmth of the sounds and it felt really intuitive to me. But I haven't explored as many synths as you have. What do you recommend from all the synths you've tried?
Thanks! The Prophet 6 or OB-6 are definitely top notch and you certainly can't go wrong. I'm assuming you want a polyphonic synth since you mention that one right? In that case the options are a bit more limited. Sonically, the DSI polysynths are probably your best bet out of the new synths being made today. If you don't mind vintage synths, then check out the Juno 6/60 or the Polysix, both sound lovely, but are much more limited synthesis-wise. It's hard to recommend a synth because it comes down to personal preference. If your gut tells you to go with the Prophet 6, then I say do it, you can't go wrong, and if you don't follow your gut you might regret it (in my experience). Good luck!
Hey, Im curious about how to connect an external instrument into the grandmother. I have tried just plugging my guitar into it but it doesn't sound. Is there anything I can do to figure this out? I can't find to seem a lot of information on the manual. Thank You!
Humano en Tránsito Probably VCA is not triggered. You could check it by playing guitar and holding note at grandmother at the same time. If you will hear guitar then that is the problem. Some synths have toggle to turn on vca all the time, if grandmother doesnt have it then you could just try to stuck some piece of paper between two keys so one of them is always pressed :) The other problem might be that signal from guitar is too low.
/noise is correct it's the VCA. Just flick the little switch in the VCA section to "Drone" and then you should be able to hear it (also make sure the filter is completely open :)). I found when I ran my guitar through it the signal was a bit weak, so I had to amp it first.
However, doesn't it apply to most other semi-modular synths too? Makes it a pretty neat tutorial about how to combine these with a regular modular setup. :) Couldn't afford anything of these, but it's inspiring nonetheless and some methods could be applied to a lot of (even freeware) soft synths also.
@@aphexon. fuck off to another channel if you don't like it. It's insane to complain that one channel doesn't cater to your specific needs when there's millions of other videos out there.

This was the best video for grandma I’ve seen yet. Made everything click for me. Thanks.
Your video makes understanding eurorack so much easier than most on youtube. thanks! Great stuff.
Was looking for this exact topic. Well done.
Moog and Roland make a killer combo.
This kinda thing is exactly why Im getting the gm for my first synth. It sounds great as is, and I can always buy some modular stuff later to add onto it for new sounds.
Moog OSC + Roland Filter sounds great
I was enjoying the Moog & Roland oscillators ... the possibilities are pretty wide
I'm late to dinner, but I love my Grandmother. Thanks for demoing these modules. Subscribed.

Loved this video man!! I just ordered the 510 after watching and cannot wait to patch it into the GM. This saved me a ton of money!!
thank you for this demo! the steiner-parker filter is a nice combo!
These are the meat and potatoes tutorials everyone! Thank you my brother. And the Grandmother gets respect and is used in such a great way here. Peace Christo 👽
great tutorial on expanding the filter (and other) modulation possibilities
7:40's patch is insanely rich as is.
14:35 's and following patches - we too could feel the techno x)
Fuck man, all your demos are always so musical! That bandpass line was Wicked!
just love your videos. so much quality content packed in such a nice way, thanks for doing that! And yeah, you're a fucking good musician, you know that
That Steiner Parker is dope
I was already considering a Grandmother but I think this video has made up my mind!
Really enjoying your GM videos! Great explanations and combinations... starting to see the deep rabbit hole that GM can lead to. 🤔
Let me take your hand and prevent you from falling into that modular hole, that's if you are as broke as me x) If not, jump ahead and I'll follow.
Finally the convergence is upon us!

Nice. This is what I've been looking for.
Some people complain about the Grandmother’s patch points, but like Mother 32, you have to patch it with other gear to get the most out of it.
Would you be open to making a video where you detach the Grandmother keyboard and sequencer/arpeggiator from the synth, and use them to play and sequence/arpeggiate outside gear? Would love to see the possibilities with that.
excellent demo and explanation. much appreciated
Love your GM vids! I need go get one! Keep them coming and happy New Year!! :-)
You just helped me make my mind up on my next purchase thanks
Great sound!
Great video! Is there a way to bypass the envelope generator and use an external one? Or is it as you said, “hard wired”?
My new favourite channel.
Your videos are awesome and a big help! Thank you!!!!!
Some good stuff here! Thanks.
Very cool. I’m dreaming of a GM combo with the Oberheim SEM.
I actually tried that the other day! They worked pretty well, but it was a bit limited, I was hoping to use the SEM filter with the GM, but unfortunately the filter doesn't have an input on the patch panel, so you have to run the whole synth through the external input.

more of these please!
Really helpful, thanks.
Im enjoying stalking all of your content

this is the video i've been waiting for :~)
Gems 💎!!
sorry for stupid question... are you outputting the grandmother to the mixer with a ts or trs ?
thank you so much for this
❤
I need advice on a euro rack case and next 4- 6modules to add to my moogs g mom. Mom 32 and dfam
so if you had a choice between Minibrute 2 and Grandmother, what would it be? i mean, in terms of euro connectivity and whatnot.

Grandmother all day long. Sound is hands down the most important quality in an instrument and the Grandmother can hold down a track on its own.
Can you use the mixer or mult in the Grandmother to mix two audio signals and send the output to the main output (with or without the filter or reverb involved)?
Can i use the dfam or the mother 32 as a 3rd oscillator like you did with the roland?

there is something with the clock out on the grandmother, which isn't right!
14:38 holy grandmother
Why is your face black and white but your hands are skin toned, where are you from?
Probably enough grandmother now?!

phex y If yeah sure, Ill guess some might find this intresting, I just say what I think. And sure you could use some of this tips with freeware apps.
lol! I promise I will resume other content shortly. Right now the GM's still high on my excitement list so I'm just riding the high.
