When I was a kid four or five years old I used to watch her on The Lawrence welk show and I begged my mother for piano lessons because I wanted to do exactly what I saw her doing. Well, my mother did give me piano lessons and I played piano my entire life. The funny thing is, when I first started at age 5, the music teacher I had only allowed me to play classical music. It wasn't until I was 21 that I picked up the Scott Joplin book of ragtime and started learning all those rags
back in the mid 60's i was at at fair in Depere Wis and met JO Ann. i was 11, my i was smitten with her every week when we'd watch Larence Welk. my parents made sure to mention that when she gave me her autograph on her photo. she then bent down and gave me a kiss on the cheek and a hug- i was in 11 yr old heaven lol.
I turned 8 years old in 1961. My parents always watched the LW show every Sat. night. I cared nothing about the show except when JoAnn came in to play. I would sit and watch her then go back to whatever I was doing. The only drawback was that you never knew from week to week WHEN in the show she was going to play, so I had to keep my ears open and half way listen from another room. What a great talent.
Laurence Well show was the greatest, when you had JoAnn Castle playing the piano the show just rocked. She was the greatest piano player I have ever seen.
When Jo Ann left in 1969, she was succeded by Gail Farrell, another great piano whiz! I love both of those ladies, they're both superb musicians and beautiful as well!
I was born in 2001 😢 Never got to experience any of 1900’s nostalgia. So I thank you so deeply for uploading these tapes so I can get to experience something I had never gotten to before…
Back in the 60s my whole family sat on the sofa to watch The Lawrence Welk Show, and my favorite one was always the talented & great Jo Ann Castle. She was my inspiration and because of her, I learned how to play the piano and still enjoy playing it.
Today is my JoAnn-Castle-evening ;-) I like her happy easy-looking way of playing, her smile, her flirting with the audience. And I like YoPaulie21 for collecting and sharing this goodie! Thank you, und froehliche Gruesse aus Tirol/Austria/Europe ;-)
When I was a kid in the early 1960's my mom & dad watched the Lawrence Welk show every week. I cared nothing about the show except when Joann played the piano. I would sit down long enough to watch her, then go about my buisness doing something else. What a great talent.
I am 53 now, when I was a kid I would struggle thru the Lawrence Welk show, WAITING to hear Jo Ann Castle play, it was the highlight of my week. Any one know what she is doing now? According to Movie Trivia she is 68 and alive and well.
Yes is an amazing pianist! I actually wrote her some years back and she sent me a letter in return and a signed picture of herself..She was actually my inspiration in playing ragtime piano...I only have a few videos of me playing church hymns and goofing around right now but I hope to make some ragtime ones as well when i get a new camera.
Now, THAT is TALENT ! unlike so many wanna-bes clustering repetitive shows like Idol, X-factor, Voice and so many other gaudy ones as well....I still watch Lawrence Welk and always have a great time!
Wow! I've got about 6 or 7 16mm films of old Lawrence Welk shows from the late 50's-early 60's. Jo Ann Castle is the best part! Thanks for uploading these!!
GR, nice reply. I suffered thru the Lennon Sisters and Myron and the accordian. But, when I heard JoAnn rev up that piano I was on the floor in front of the old Emerson TV, in glorious black & white. And a 1 and a 2 :) ps: there are some great inverviews with JoAnn on Ytube she is still sweet.
Welk stars were allowed to travel all they wanted on off season to make their own money. Myron Floren did it for 32 years. Some wanted more money full time, others loved the steady job and union scale is good money. There were many of the Welk stars that stayed over 30 years and 25 years and still perform together today. Welk Group still pays residuals and Mr Welk set up a pension plan early in the show for people.
Oh, and one more thing, she is an absolute prodigy that happens to be incredibly sexy!! I hope that's O.K. to say in this day and age. She is my Elvis!!!
I'm curious to know if Bob Darch liked JoAnn's stylings. In the late 40's, he was trying to revive ragtime (all of the original rags from the ragtime era). So I wonder if he liked JoAnn's ragged versions of popular songs?
The only thing that could improve it would be if there was no accompaniment from other instruments - That, and if my Dad were still alive to enjoy this with me and my daughter... I miss you Dad.
+Randy Gardner I have an idea. They still have the Welk Theater in Branson, Missouri. You could try writing in care of the theater and if she's not appearing there, there's probably a good chance that they would forward your letter.
I just read all the musicians singers and including Jo Ann were all paid Union scale pay, no matter how much money Lawrence made. Welk did NOT share the wealth the bastard. That's why the Lennon Sisters finally jumped ship. Anyone know more about this let me know.
Jo Ann Castle, always a treat! How anyone can 'thumbs-down' this is beyond me!
+Gregory May: They must have meant " Dis I Like" !!!!!
Trolls have the tendency to thumbs down. Just ignore them.

she plays the accordion also. most excellent performer.
One her best performances and one of the greatest versions of this song
She was the best musician on that stage.

Wow she is incredible
She’s the reason I asked my parents for piano lessons at 5yrs old! She’s the freaking best!
i agree
Always loved her piano playing
JoAnn Castle was the only thing I ever wanted to watch on the Lawrence Welk Show.
She was amazing!!!
What talent! Always enjoyed her playing. NH
i never get tired of this

She was so much fun to watch! A real treat!!
Belleza y talento en aquellos tiempos

I dare you to not smile watching this great lady play
I was minus 2 in 61. I enjoy her piano playing.
Wow. Double Wow.
I love her style. She and "Big" Tiny Little are my two favorite ragtime pianists.
Love you, Joann!
Agreed--she was the best thing on the LW show by far.
I am 53 now, when I was a kid I would struggle thru the Lawrence Welk show, WAITING to hear Jo Ann Castle play, it was the highlight of my week. Any one know what she is doing now? According to Movie Trivia she is 68 and alive and well.
You said it exactly! Luv JoAnn Castle.❤
only joann can play this song so glad lawrence hired her there will never be another one like.
What a piano player. Love her on this show on that piano.
Professional
I had never heard of this lady before I heard her playing on an internet radio station, I think she is brilliant and thanks for bringing her to me.

She makes it look easy and fun, I watched her a lot growing up... Love her style and her love of playing
I wish that I could meet Joann someday.

Виртуозное владение инструментом!!! Воспринимается очень даже современно!
Absolutely my favorite version of this! *loves it*!!!
She makes me proud to be an American
Лучшая из лучших , браво !)))
Still an absolute banger in 2020. 🎹
Holy Bleep, I am in love.
amazing, what a discovering for me!
Queen of the upright LOVED her
Wow! she smiles the whole time =D great!
Never fails to cheer me up :D
I LOVE rag-time music!! Joan still plays today! This is a GREAT site for an "old-timer" like me.

One of the greatest
😮👏🙌🇦🇷
Maravillosa !

Fantastic! Harpo would've been so proud!
Amazing
nice, I like that :)
Well if you notice, she doesn't use music, she plays all from heart and ear.
Uh ... music, plus ➕ Practice, practice, practice, rehearsals and recordings with live events.
The paper on the piano 🎹 simply fall off.
a favorite
The left hand at 1:23. Melts me every time.
wow, great, shes beautiful
Amazing left hand
BRAVO
Oh, and one more thing, she is an absolute prodigy that happens to be incredibly sexy!! I hope that's O.K. to say in this day and age. She is my Elvis!!!
4 husbands would likely agree with you...
super......................
I always ha ove
Sehr schön - auch auf dem Piano.
Gesungen gefällt es mir am besten von MAE WEST im Film Sextette / USA 1976
If only I have 3 percent of her talent
The breakdown at 1:23 gets me every time
I bet she blew her piano teacher away with her playing :D
He was known to be pretty frugal. However, he pulled a lot of musicians up from obscurity.
In Switzerland ;-)

2016
@lotud8 May be so...but I sure wish the old "Variety Show" would come back. They had more to them than the current "reality" shows.
The only reason why this looks possible, is because she makes it look easy.
The only thing that could improve it would be if there was no accompaniment from other instruments -
That, and if my Dad were still alive to enjoy this with me and my daughter...
I miss you Dad.
Visit our version, The LUCKY DUCKIES's version!
Something in the look of her face at 0:15 reminds me of Liberace...
Actually they do in Switzerland! I know a swiss girl that really can play!!
I cant find anywhere to send fan mail to her? Anyone have any idea where to send it to?
+Randy Gardner I have an idea. They still have the Welk Theater in Branson, Missouri. You could try writing in care of the theater and if she's not appearing there, there's probably a good chance that they would forward your letter.
This was 1961, how did you expect her to look? haha women dressed in dresses back then especially on television.
I just read all the musicians singers and including Jo Ann were all paid Union scale pay, no matter how much money Lawrence made. Welk did NOT share the wealth the bastard. That's why the Lennon Sisters finally jumped ship. Anyone know more about this let me know.
Always a different design on the piano for every appearance
housewives play like her over there?!? where do you live?
She must have had a hell of grip. Those fingers were probably as strong as iron pegs.
The pretty woman with devil's hands!
Can she be compared to a Hazel Scott though?
she look like a housewife...
Practice those scales b
This woman was an incredible pianist.
