How to track NXDN trunking with RTL SDR & DSDPlus

In this video I show how to follow NXDN/IDAS trunking systems using DSDPlus and RTL SDRs. This is using the latest free version of DSDPlus. Yes, there are paid versions but you don't need them, the free version works perfectly fine. You can use the method shown in this video for other trunking systems too, including P25.

At 3:58 I forgot to mention the other method. You can find the voice channels experimentally or instead, you can use an online source such as RadioReference or some other database.

No, it doesn't matter as long as it's not one of the versions that say "Trial" every few seconds haha
my frequencies file wont open and looks like theres nothing there because its 1kb.
Hi would you consider making a script to find local handsets and lock to the upload frequency until out of range? In principle to be aware of emergency services around you.
Thank you for the video and explanation of how to decode this system. Please forgive me but can it decode other modulations? Also is the trunking you are referring to only public service or can it be something like Dstar, DMR, Fusion etc.
This video shows how to decode NXDN trunking, but the same technique can be applied to P25 trunking too. You do not need such a complicated setup if you want to decode systems without following trunking. You can still use DSDplus or instead DSD which is the program I show in my tutorials. Could I achieve much the same result by using one dongle then finding all the VC frequencies in SDR # . Then use frequency manager + scanner plugin to jump around the voice channels? Also if I do go down the 2 dongle route is it possible to use 1antenna or does that mean a 50% signal reduction for each. Sorry for the newbie questions
Two are needed as one follows the control channel only. It would be technically possible to use one which just monitors the control channel when none of the voice channels are active but I do not know whether this software supports that. If you connect 2 radios to 1 antenna through a splitter then yes you'll about half the signal.
If you wanted to only use the scanner plugin without any intelligent trunking control following then yes that would work and you only need the one dongle.

Can't you just use unitrunker and cable it into DSD plus? Would avoid all that extra work.

Unfortunately not, Unitrunker does not support NXDN NEXEDGE trunking systems.

Followed this exactly. Im running DSD+ on a MAC through Wineskin. Following the directions it threw when I tried to open FMP and the VC files using the 20002 port. When I change it to an soundflower input. VC runs, but FMP still doesn't . No after what I do, when I open FMP it opens the initial terminal screen showing the set frequency and the second SDR device and says automated voice tracking starting, but that's it. It doesn't do anything els. no second window appears showing frequency, nothing. So naturally when I open the VC Bat file it opens and runs but does not follow any voice and there is zero sound.

Is this for conventional DMR or trunked? For conventional you only have to open dsdplus by double clicking the exe file. No syntax neeeded.
Conventional. I had another go at it in the past 1/2 hour and have it going now. Had to adjust the -i and -o values for DSD in a batch file to match what I have for ver 1.074. I also put a line in the batch file for FMP. I have a second dongle so next challenge is figuring out CAP+. Thanks for the videos.
Capacity plus trunking following with dsdplus doesn't follow the rest channel though, so I'm not sure how useful it is. I haven't tried it myself.

One to listen to the control channel, the other to listen to the voice channels. And you only need two for trunking systems with a control channel

It is a bit complicated! I would love a program where I can just open it up and choose a mode I want to listen to and search NXDN and DMR. I would gladly pay for a ready made program that I can point to a band or frequency and listen to NXDN and DMR. It can be trunked or not. I just want to scan a band and discover new NXDN and DMR transmissions.
That's just a scanner. Buy a whistler TRX1
@@radiosification: I have the Uniden BCD436HP scanner. It does a lot but I cannot just put it into NXDN mode and scan up or down a set of frequencies. I doubt the Whislter TRX1 will do any better. I can program NXDN frequencies from Radio Reference or Digital Frequency Search. I can also scan from a set of frequencies but what I cannot do it put the scanner to scan from frequencies X to Y in NXDN only. It would be nice to discover new NXDN transmissions not covered by Radio Reference or Digital Frequency Search. I would gladly search for NXDN with the RTL SDR if it were not so complicated to do. Is the Whistler TRX1 not just a scanner too?
@@JustLearning I am very surprised your scanner doesn't do that. To me it's a basic function of any scanner. The whistler absolutely does do that.
@@radiosification If the Whistler Scanner can be set to scan ONLY NXDN up and down a band then I can see getting it. I just want to be clear, my Uniden BCD436HP can scan up and down a group of frequencies but it will detect FM, DMR, NXDN, an P25 in that range of frequencies. And If I make a favorite list of NXDN frequencies it will scan that too. But I do not think there is a way to (for instance) have it scan 450-512 MHz and have it only detect NXDN (in a search mode). I can not put it into DMR only or NXDN only mode and only detect those modes respectively. Are you saying that the Whistler Scanner can be set to "ONLY" detect a certain mode of transmission? Look forward to your reply.
@@JustLearning I believe it can, yes. I'm pretty sure before when I have used the search function, I turned on only one digital mode and it only searched for that mode. But don't buy it just because I said so, best to check with someone else first to make sure
