Hello everyone, first of all, it’s good to be back after a year of this channel sitting dormant. I’ve been working on this video in particular since early 2022, and now it’s finally done. I never really expected it to be this long, but as I wrote the script it just became longer and longer. If a video of this length isn’t your thing, then that’s totally fine - it’s understandable as 11+ hours is a long time to sink into one video. However, if this video does interest you, feel free to watch it at your own pace, and remember to use the chapter select and time stamps in the description for easier viewing. If you endeavour to watch the entire video, thank you so much! It’s really appreciated, as this video has been a huge passion project for me over the last year.
As a disclaimer, this script was finished in around November last year, so some of the things I talk about may seem outdated. Especially when I say "In February of this year" in reference to the release date of Horizon Forbidden West right at the start of the video (a complete mistake that I left in by accident). Another example is when I talk about the Horus Titans during the Open World Overview section of the video, I wrote the script before the Burning Shores was even announced, so some of the topics I talk about may seem outdated given the events of the DLC. This is only because I didn't want to alter my original script too heavily, as this video is meant to be from the perspective of playing Horizon Forbidden West for the first time without prior knowledge of what happens during The Burning Shores Expansion. Just thought I'd clear that up.
Anyway, let me stop rambling! I hope you all enjoy the video, and I hope some of you stick around to see what other content I have in the works for the future. Thanks everyone, take care :)

I cannot wait for the 3rd installment to come out. Looks like Guerrilla will be releasing a multi-player title before the next main-line Horizon game (according to job posts on their site)

I think what made Varl's death sadder is realizing how he viewed Beta, and why he fought so hard for her. Beta didnt just represent his close friends sister, from some dialogue in the game (I dont remember which section) it was implied that Beta made Varl remember Vala, his younger sister who was killed at Aloy's proving ceremony. He already saw one little sister die, and he fought like hell to make sure another one didnt.

Finally, a video that analyses the skill trees in depth. I glossed over the skill trees so hard in my critique because I got so bored writing about them on my first go of the script and I got so many comments that wished I'd gone in depth I nearly lost my mind 😭
I'm gonna be honest too, I had no idea there was this much complexity either, I think I really paid little attention to the skill trees when I actually played the game itself, and once I found a Valor Surge I liked, I just stuck with it rather than messing around, this was really interesting to listen to.

I actually really enjoyed writing about the skill trees! They are the foundation that makes the end-game play so well once you get all your skills. There are for sure a ton of useless ones that serve as filler, but the active skills are impactful.
The Valor Surges in particular were things that I really enjoyed playing around with -- there's just so many to choose from and they all fit in different circumstances. Although, I'd be lying if I said I didn't just use Overshield like 75% of the time.

    • @mikehurt3290
      @mikehurt3290 Год назад +1

I think most people don't really care because towards the mid to end of the game you're already almost overpowered so the extra skills don't make much of a difference

    • @HackmannT

@@mikehurt3290 With different skills and valor surges, there are just too many options to keep track of in your head. Especially if you also consider the melee and want to memorize a few combos of that system. You end up with six different weapons and 18 selection options in terms of ammo and stuff. Then you add the different skills for all of the weapons and it's just way too many options. I also ended up just using my six weapons and that's it. Just an easy set-and-forget valor surge, no melee and never used the skills after entering the true Forbidden West.

I fell in love with the Horizon series in 2017 when my sister started playing HZD and I can't wait for the last part of Aloy's journey. This world is incredibly well crafted, and there are so many diverse characters it's hard not to love it. On top of that, the stories of the Earth and Aloy are captivating and beautiful, truly amazing work from the Guerrilla team. Thank you for this exhausting analysis of one of the best games out there, your passion is beautiful and I hope there will be more Horizon content in the future.

  • @darknesswave100

To add to my other comment the NPCs in this game are amazing. The lift operator who at first wouldn't let Aloy down ended up coming to her side when the priest tried to go back and the Oseram soldier who was escorting the priest was tired of his nonsense up to the point he was gonna leave him behind cause Aloy told him to escort the priest to Chainscrape. Then the guys in Las Vegas specifically Morlund who showed such passion for his craft and the legacy his grandfather left him. T.J. Thyne did a fantastic job voicing him. Let's not even forget Kotallo who was my favorite of the new group that is a badass and Zo who gave erend a run for his money strength wise which was wild and Alva who geeks out when discovering new info. There's just so many NPCs who added so much to the story. I don't see how anybody can say that the NPCs in this game aren't better than Zero Dawn by a mile. I also like how Erend called Aloy out on her nonsense. She was acting so cold towards him and everybody else. I get that she has to do her thing but she was unnecessarily rude to him. She didn't even really apologize to him. She said I'm sorry YOU couldn't handle me leaving. That's not an apology at all. The least she can do is say I'm sorry I left but there's something literally only I can do. I think she changed after this moment. Cause after that she agreed to help Zo and let her tag along and she did the same with everybody else that joined her. Really nice development for her

4:10:00 The AETHER mission was my favorite out of the three sub functions search, as gorgeous as underwater/underground Las Vegas was (with adorable* Oseram companions) or getting to The Greenhouse and learning of the Ted Faro plague and the Quen. Finishing AETHER and listening to that speech calling for Unity (also the name of the song that plays in the background) further cementing Hekarro’s call for union and peace. Also the scene where Kotallo questions Aloy’s authority for trying to bring down the Bulwark & Aloy giving one of the greatest roasts ever in gaming.

Videos like this really show the dedication it takes to really go in depth with a game and I for one really appreciate it. These games are truly special and the care put into the world and everything in it makes me happy I gave the first game a chance all that time ago. I think honestly my favorite part about the game besides the usual stuff (combat, world in general etc) are the Datapoints you can find. Each one is a piece of the overall story of how the world came to be as it is and as somebody who enjoys world building and small bits of lore you get they really give you insight on the world as a whole. From the guy in the first game who went around before the end to the places that had an impact on his life, to the story of how one man revived a dead city in Las Vegas, the lore and the world itself is its own character. Sure the post apocalyptic genre has been done to death to the point of redundancy but Guerilla managed to spin it in a way I'd never dreamed of. I'm just about to go through Forbidden West again (had to finish the RE4 remake which was incredible) just to get all the data points and do literally everything the game has to offer after finishing the dlc. Seeing how the dlc ended and the info we got makes me excited for the next game and to get even more info on the world and see how the story unfolds as we explore the world Guerilla will make for us

Horizon is a very unique take on a post-apocalyptic story for sure. Most post-apocalyptic games depict a bleak and soulless world, but Horizon puts a hopeful spin on it that I find a to be a breath of fresh air. The worldbuilding is great too, and it's always fascinating listening to the audio logs and reading the data points to learn as much as possible about the old world. The sheer sense of exploration in Horizon is something that's rarely captured by AAA open world games. I adore this world, and I can't wait for more!

9:08:31 I also love this scene because it shows the classic nature vs. nurture argument, as while Aloy & Beta are genetically identical to Elisabet, their backgrounds are in a way similar & different to hers.
It also reminded me of how Elisabet herself wouldn’t have been the person she became if she didn’t have someone who gave her strength & helped make her who she was similar to what Rost did for Aloy. That person was her mother Miriam, who taught her to use her talents to serve life, not death. After an experiment went wrong at her childhood home that ended with a tree with a nest of baby birds burned down & Miriam chastising Elisabet over the dead birds, that moment stuck with Elisabet for the rest of her life & Miriam left so much of a profound impact on her that Elisabet’s own company was named after her.

As someone who has been a big Horizon fan since Zero Dawns reveal and played and gotten the platinum for both Zero Dawn and Forbidden west this video was a very nice watch and honestly one of my favorite Horizon Videos. Great job and can't wait to watch the next 5 hours.

You’re crazy for making this be this long (in a good way of course). I’ll definitely watch this in parts for a days to come. I just started playing Zero Dawn this year and finished the story about 2 weeks later. Then played Forbidden West days later and already platinumed it after nearly 3 weeks. I’m already close to getting all the trophies for the DLC.
Both are beautiful, beautiful games with a lore unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. Of course the post apocalyptic/dystopian setting has been showcased time and time again but Guerrilla completely elevated the genre and made it unique with animal like machines instead of zombies. They quickly rose to my all time favorite games and I keep craving more content more than any other game. They’re already alongside Insomniac as my favorite game devs.
It’s great to see others like yourself share the same fire passion I have and others do too. I can’t thank you enough for this video.

Wow, I just finished watching the Horizon Forbidden West | The Ultimate Retrospective on RUclips and I am blown away! This 11-hour video is an absolute masterpiece, providing an in-depth exploration of every aspect of the game, from its stunning graphics and immersive world-building to its captivating story and engaging combat mechanics.
I was impressed with the level of detail and analysis presented in this retrospective. You did an excellent job of breaking down each element of the game and explaining the thought process behind it. It's clear that a lot of care and effort went into creating Horizon Forbidden West, and this retrospective helps viewers appreciate that even more.
The presentation and editing of the video are also top-notch. The pacing is just right, and your enthusiasm and knowledge of the game make it easy and enjoyable to watch for the full 11 hours. I found myself completely immersed in the video, eager to learn more about the game and its development.
Overall, I highly recommend this video to anyone interested in game, or simply to fans of the game who want to delve deeper into its creation and development. This video is a true testament to the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into making a video game, and it's a joy to watch from start to finish.

Forbidden West didn't gel with me as much as Zero Dawn did, but both games have such an interesting premise and story that I'm always drawn to videos on them. I'll likely never finish this game myself but with this video I suppose I don't really need to. It's interesting to be able to see why someone enjoys something I didn't, so to have such an all encompassing overview of Forbidden West is quite something. I especially liked how organically this game ties into the first one and naturally links the threats and themes. Nemesis is the cause of all the troubles Aloy faces, but the true enemes was always humanity's hubris. Our society "the old ones" have doomed this planet repeatedly and will do so again as long as we exist. Aloy and the new generation of humans born from the ashes of the old can finally create a society and world that learns from this mistakes. Only if they unite and beat Nemesis of course.
The only thing I'm worried about is that even if they defeat the incoming Nemsis attack that will not take care of the colony it came from which most likely continues to create machines and will just launch another attack later.
Thanks for this long video analyses either way. It's nice to find someone who appreciates this great game for all its aspects.

Which is even a more difficult challenge. It’s incredible to see Horizon be put on the pedestal that so desperately deserves. I remember 2017 when BOTW came out (big Zelda fan here) it dwarfed Zero Dawn…but when ultimately played it, it was an amazing story with amazing gameplay to back it up. The story is quite interesting, unique, fresh, and just hits right. Forbidden West had a huge shoe to fill, but it did and spectacularly, too.
Glad to see the Horizon fans join in on your video. It kinda serves as the fire at a camp. Brings everyone together. Thank you again!

I'm also pretty sure 11 hour long video makes up for one year without any😁 Well done and well rested. You've earn it🥰 I wish you luck on you're next project☺

I love the Horizon games to bits. I still fondly remember how the revelations of Zero Dawn blew my mind. The premis of the overall story is pure genius and it's crafted with near perfection and filled with interesting characters to befriend, care for, dislike or fight. Thanks for making this awesome video so I can live through the game again without having to actually spend dozens of hours again ❤

Holy shit, and here I thought 5 hours for several games was long, ultimate retrospective indeed! Horizon Forbidden West is one of my absolute favorite games, so I just had to watch this! Grant it, I did so at 1.25x speed, and while playing games over some days, so I didn't always pay attention to the visuals, but I did pay attention to most of what you said. It's been a year since I finished HFW, so this was a great refresher. I had forgotten a bit about just how complex this game is on every level, particularly in terms of writing, so you made me appreciate it even more than I already did! I was surprised you gave almost everything about it such high praise, probably because I've seen so many criticisms of it (or people just ignoring its qualities), and I agree with most of your points. Glad to see that some appreciate the hard work put into this game! You timed the release of this video really well too, just after the Burning Shores DLC got released, which is what I've primarily been playing while listening to this video. I timed it really well too, finishing the video right before heading into the final mission of Burning Shores, I'm so excited to finish it! Would you do a video about that DLC too, or are you (understandably) kinda tired of covering Horizon at the moment?

    • @LongEaredFox_

Thank you so much for the enthusiasm for my video! It makes me very happy to hear you enjoyed it over the course of a few days.
I will definitely be doing a video for The Burning Shores, rest assured it will happen down the line; there are just other videos I want to make before getting back to Horizon. I also want to eventually do videos for Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Frozen Wilds expansion, just so I have the entire story of Horizon on my channel before the third game.
So yeah, this definitely isn't the end of Horizon-related content on my channel, but I've got videos on a few other games planned first :)

Tilda is such an interesting character to me
She constantly corrects Aloy and separates herself from the other Zenith, but really she is no different from the rest of them. She can come off as empathetic and caring but its a facade- she only "cares" because she sees Aloy as Elisabet. If Aloy were not a clone of Elisabet, Tilda couldn't care any less about her.
Tilda is just as cold and unfeeling as the rest of the Zenith. To me this is best showcased by how ready she is to slaughter an entire tribe without a second thought- and on top of that, expecting Aloy to go along with it given what she knows about Elisabet.
It especially shows to me with her lack of care for Beta. It could seem that Tilda cared and empathized with Beta because of that data channel, but that too, is a lie. Tilda never opened the data channel to try and open up Beta to artwork or give her light. She only opened it to try and make a relationship like with Elisibet again, and when she realized that Beta wasn't like the Elisabet built up in Tilda's head, she lost interest and threw her away. This is why Tilda cut it off without even saying anything; what she wanted wasn't there, and there was no point in giving Beta the time of day anymore, especially at the risk of being caught.
She legitimately thinks lesser of Beta. Shes the "inferior copy". The irony is not lost on me how Tilda comments that Sylens underestimates Aloy, while Tilda is underestimating Beta. She does not even give a single iota of a thought to how beta could help them, like Aloy thought up in her new, frankly better, plan.
Tilda is very complex and very interesting. I love how all of her motivation and hidden agenda are (mostly) read between the lines

1:52:11 Side note: Stormbirds weren’t created by HEPHAESTUS when it became an AI. They were created when it was still part of GAIA, not originally created for combat.
Stormbirds were used in conjunction with AETHER to detoxify the atmosphere and moderate the weather from the skies. This also applies to Snapmaws who were used in conjunction with POSEIDON to detoxify the oceans.

You're right! Many of the combat machines in the game were repurposed from existing types of terraforming machines. However, Stormbirds as we know them in the games (with aggressive behaviour and weapons) were created by HEPHAESTUS. I imagine the original Stormbirds looked a little different to the ones that HEPHAESTUS creates, similar to how the Grimhorns look and behave different to Plowhorns.

Having just put in almost 300 hours on the PC release of Forbidden West, I am so ready to spend another 11 on this video!
Probably my favourite aspect of Forbidden West are the environmental restoration missions. I love that not only do we take an active role, we also actually see the changes both on the map and in game. Seeing the Utaru fields become green or the rivers clearing is just so freaking cool.
