D.C. rock outfit Fugazi dropped their full-length debut in 1990, taking the aggression and ferocity of hardcore punk, but applying it to flashier guitar riffs, more adventurous song structures, and a complex rhythm section.

I love the huge difference between Mackaye lead tracks and Picciotto lead tracks. The Mackaye tracks tend to be more hardcore/Minor Threat punk (shout along) anthems whereas the Picciotto tracks tend to be more melodic/alternative style. And there's even examples where they switch styles. Love it! :)

Imho the difference between good punk music and GREAT punk music is melody. and fugazi is a prime example of what can be done with the genre!

can we stop blurting out obvious choices like Kid A/Darkside of the Moon/Nevermind/etc... there are a LOT of really easy to pick "classic" albums. the Beatles, Radiohead, Nirvana and Pink Floyd (and everything else people keep commenting) are pretty widely accepted modern classics and are frequently discussed as being such. Anthony doesnt need to chime in for more people to figure it out. if you live in modern times and haven't formulated some opinion of those bands on your own you're probably living under a rock. its more useful and interesting to review "classics" that not everyone has already heard before, rather than all standing around jacking off together to how good Kid A was.

Love, love, LOVE this band. Love their albums, their songs, their live shows, their every breath.Love this review, too! Yes, Repeater is their 1st proper album but I tend to root for Margin Walker EP (came out the year before, right?) as something just as monumental. Also, used to listen to In On The Kill Taker for years and years...today, I just can't decide which album is best - this is the only band I know that I think is virtually flawless...

I honestly don't think there has been a more innovative figure in punk and hardcore than Ian Mackaye. Even today, he's pushed the boundaries of the ideologies that the scene and movement had to offer. He forced more melodic structures into the music, really warping it and changing it into what really can only be considered "post hardcore", as you say, in its truest form. Even so, he still keeps that DIY attitude and ethic at heart. The code of punk and hardcore are really at the root and core of his being, whether his music "sounds" like anything from those genres or not. The DC scene was really very phenomenal in the 80s and beyond for what it did to bring punk in so many different ways, but I don't think we would have gotten as far as we did with bands like Rites of Spring or Dag Nasty if it weren't for Ian Mackaye being right there alongside those bands. It's been clear to me that Ian was just do damn jaded with the violence and destruction of the punk scene. I think a lot of people where in DC hardcore felt like this, though, which is why it advanced as much as it did in such a short period of time. Ian Mackaye is a Darwinist of the punk movement, where he actively kept the ideals of punk alive, but forced it to evolve in ultimately unique ways that we really hadn't seen before or since what Fugazi would become. Even so, the dude still rips. He still stays humble. He still doesn't care about merch or how much money his music makes. All he cares about is the passion of music and the message that he's presenting. He's actually got another band today, called Coriky. They're set to their first album here in a month or so and I can't tell you how excited I am for it. Ian still believes in what he's doing with the art and expression of his music over 30 years later -- and that's more punk rock than any of the shit the Sex Pistols or the Ramones ever did (not to call them out or say they weren't truly punk or anything, but damn did they lose their impact quickly. Ian straddles the line between underground, indie, and mainstream, and still maintains his integrity).

Fugazi's one of my favorite bands ever. I'm sure you know what that means exactly to a person. I think it would be cool to hear you review some of the fringe-ish fugazi albums that you might not be all for from the get-go. The Argument had a different sound, I don't hear people talk about End Hits very often even though I think it's very very solid. Also, just to say, the Furniture EP is probably my favorite Fugazi release (so hard to say with certainty). It seems like they let themselves mess around more on that and it's so dirty and high-energy. Even for them.
    Thanks for the review!

Could you review Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots? It's one of my personal favorites, and i would like to hear what you have to say about it.
An album by the Stooges would be cool too.

Anthony you should review Unwound for classics week this year! and yeah Leaves Inside You is great...but it would be killer to hear about Repetition

In On The Kill Taker is massively underated, used to be my fav Fugazi record. tied with Repeater and if u considered 13 songs a record, all 3 tied. End Hits and Red Medicine are great too.

Thanks for mentioning Red Medicine! I’ve always felt that album is under appreciated!? The only time I saw them was on that album’s tour, & they were ferocious!...Totally SLAYED the little hall in our little town! I do still like Repeater though...FUN to listen to on a big car stereo! Fucked up, Got ambushed, Zipped in!

Also that 95 tour was first time i saw them live in SF

Do you have other Fugazi reviews? I'd pay to hear you review their album The Argument. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the common belief that this band got better with every record they did.

I am trying to remember a band from the early to mid 90s obscure band that had a singer bassist and drummer no guitar from what I remember kind of like a fugazi sound but I can't remember any songs? Help appreciated. Fugazi was amazing a true unique sound very original
