    I'm from Seattle. I recently and suddenly took the opportunity to be in AMS on my own next week - for only two days!! As much as I want to enjoy the short time visiting there, the uncertainty of the basics can be overwhelming. Your video was the first one I clicked on from my search and was i lucky! Your video took more of that uncertainty off of my shoulders. I feel more confident. Plus your information, composition and camera work make the experience feel so smooth. For everyone at 2:10: I see this a lot at Schiphol. As these signs are a bit too congested/compressed and only feature main stations, I can understand one gets confused if you need a specific, usually smaller, station.
    In such cases, try to look for rather large yellow (non-electronic!) signs. You will find these at most stations, though unfortunately some stations have seen these removed or (how weird) only feature them on the platforms that require you to go through the gates first. In case you are at Schiphol Airport, there the signs seem to have been hidden behind the ticket machines the closest to Arrivals/Departures 1/2.
    These yellow signs accumulate certain main directions in the country, and list these at the top by mentioning main trainstations. They also provide the full weekly schedule for all trains that will be running in those directions, feature a time-line kind of overview of the route each train mentioned on the sign will take (and thus which stations it will call at), show which stations hold the intercity-status by showing the 'IC' abbreviation in the station-bullets in the timeline-overview, and like that ain't enough, they also feature a full written overview of each station a specific train will call at.
    But the most important thing is that these signs are always accompanied by a map showing the entire railnetwork in the country, with every station mentioned on the map and searchable by alphabetical index at the bottom, while also showing which operators are operating on routes not in operation by NS.
    So if you are unsure where you need to go (as your station is not mentioned on the compressed signs) but do know that you (for example) are going to take a trip to the south of the country from Amsterdam Central station, you want to look for the sign with 'S Hertogenbosch/Eindhoven/Venlo' or something similar at the top.
    Hope this helps ;)

      @@TinagirlTravels You're welcome. It's a shame NS-staff usually only point people towards the big display at Schiphol (on top of the ticket windows to the left of Arrivals/Departures 1/2) or the compressed signage instead of directing them to the physical tables, as it just clarifies the route the train will take. In just one go you will be able to see if you have a different option as well, should you've missed the train that was mentioned in your travel-advice.
      Of course, the one thing they can't do is show the current situation on the network (and as many Dutch people will know, delays and cancellations are quite common), but it visualises the network in such a nice way I have yet to see an app do that.

    Question... If you have to transfer from a train to a bus/metro for your itinerary, do you need to get another ticket for the bus/metro or is it included in the train ticket?

    • @TinagirlTravels
      @TinagirlTravels  2 месяца назад

      I believe you just tap your card/ticket and keep going to your destination.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 2 месяца назад

      That depends on the ticket you buy. If you use a debit/credit card to pay by just tapping in and out, you will pay the full fare all the time. Depending on how much you will be using public transport, a dedicated single-use ticket that is valid for a day and could even be valid on multiple modalities, could be the better option. Unfortunately, giving you the cheapest option is next to impossible as the tariffsystem has become very complex these days.
      Tapping in and out with a debit/credit card saves you the hassle of buying tickets all the time, but that way you can miss out on discounts you will get with a dedicated ticket.

    • @TinagirlTravels

      That’s true, it’s kind of a paper magnetic kind of card, you just tap at the turnstile, it’s a clear glass reader on every turnstile. Tap and go, and if you have a problem, there’s always someone at the station that can help.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 2 месяца назад

      You will always be able to exit a trainstation via the turnstiles, even if you didn't tap in. BUT, when using a regular chipcard (I don't know how this works with a debit/credit card), this will make you lose a certain amount of money as you didn't tap in, with the railways assuming that you travelled from somewhere, deducting a certain amount from the card (I expect the full deposit of 20 euro, but not sure). One can ask for a refund should this have happened to you.
