North Ormesby (Doggy), Middlesbrough Then & Now

- This video slideshow looks at particular area of Middlesbrough called North Ormesby but known affectionately as Doggy. This area has changed a lot especially after about 30% of the housing was demolished in the 1970's so the A66 could be built.
The music used in this video is Parallel by Ross Bugden and can be found here:-

Very powerful emotional film highlighting that in regards to views and architecture the area has lost thousands of beautiful buildings only to be replaced with waste land or soulless new buildings.
Thank you Trucker and I agree with you.
Excellent photographic memories of Doggy. A photo of the once thriving Doggy Market days compared to the dismal state of affairs now, would have been interesting. Keep the memories coming!
Thanks Gerald, more videos will be coming.
Just came across this. Well put together. Grew up in Maltby St in the 80's. Have fond memories.
Thank you David 👍
Amazing comparisons, my mother was born in Doggy on Bargate Street and lived in some of the surrounding streets. I'm currently researching my family history and their lives in North Ormesby. This video has given me a great insight thank you. X
Whole communities lost and changed forever. Great videos giving a glimpse into my husband's family home
Deborah, I lived in North Ormesby and we lost the family home through a compulsory purchase order so the A66 flyover could be built. So I experienced this loss if community which the area never recovered from.
@@BigMack1959 Yes my husband's family were from Worsley Street his mum moved to Manchester when she married and visited frequently her sister was moved to stockton when they had to go but when she was older we took her back for a look and she couldn't recognise anywhere she was so upset
to think i used to live in one of the houses at 0:44, this is legit the first images ive seen of them. you've done a service in just reminding me of them, cheers mate.
You're welcome Valkree, I'm happy that you've got to see your house again 👍
I'm 24 and not old enough to remember some of these buildings. But I've always been brought up knowing about the Hospital, as a grand parent worked there. Now I know what it looks like, I'm disgusted that it was ever knocked down. Some stunningly beautiful buildings.
Liam, if you look at my other videos you will see that many more building like this were demolished in Middlesbrough.
People there voted or Labour cllrs to run the town - they only have themselves to blame
Thank you, Stephen for your Then and Now series of photos. I am working on a novel set mainly in Middlesbrough in the 1920s (nearing completion), so am in constant search of old photos, names, pubs, etc. so as to be sure of not making mistakes (I was born and bred in the West Riding and never lived in Middlesbrough). Keep up the good work, though I guess it must be depressing for you and others to see how many of the buildings that gave the town its distictive character have been demolished to make way for roads, carparks, supermarkets and other anonymous and ugly stuff, which will soon age, giving Middlesbrough a tastless and out of date look, prompting yet another wave of demolition and building, as is happening all over Britain. I live near Lyon, in France, where the 60s frenzy for restructuring town centres did not catch on, thus preserving many fine 19th and 18th (and sometimes older) buildings. Kind regards.
Thank you Henry for your comment, I too have been planning a novel set primarily in North Ormesby which will run from pre WW1 to the early 2000's. I agree with your analysis of the planning of the towns in England since the late fifties and and am in envy of of the architecture in your current home. I wish you well with your novel and look forward to reading it when it is published.
@@BigMack1959 Well! Good of you to reply, Stephen. Believe it or not, the protagonist of my story was also born and bred in North Ormesby (Hampden Street). The story starts in 1919, with flashbacks to 1918 in France, and ends in 1923. Have a grand day. Henry
2:02 shows a view from 'our street - Bargate Street' Its a cracking shot and takes me back to the 1950's...Thank you for the memories.
Your welcome, I'm glad you liked the video
great stuff stephen.....labour councils have always been very good at demolishing things & ruining the town
Les Myers You are not wrong, labour has s systematically ruined this town with shit planning and taking in the most Muslim refugees to drain the merge resources this place has left....is like a third world shithole now
Yes, I know 😊💜💖, I live in Middlesbrough. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I went to Springfield School which was down the road from Southlands School. Both schools shared the big football pitches between the schools.
I went to Southlands Mike
My nanna and grandad used to run Lincoln Villa, love to see it
I was brought up in north ormesby and went to the pav many times. We were the last pupils to attend Lawson and the first pupils at the brand new Southlands county modern. Much appreciate this chance to visit my past.
You're most welcome Alan. I also was brought in North Ormesby from about 1961 - 1971 so you can imagine that this is one of my favourite videos.
I was also one of the last pupils to attend Lawson Junior, I think then it would have been classed as 4th year Junior. I distinctly remember in the last days clearing the classrooms & offices of the headmaster & loading stuff into the teachers cars, looking back on it they were probably robbing any useful crap they could find before the removal men arrived.
Worked there for 25 yrs at Reed Millican the glass merchants [latterly Elders Walker Millica Kings road, behind the Buckaneer [the buck!!] & Lortons Bookies on the corner. happy times alas long gone.
I used to go to the Budokan karate club, great place and went to some great tournaments around the country.....I was 14.....I’m 60 now
Some of the second pictures are unrecognisable. Love all of them , especially the Budocan . I attended martial art classes from the mid 70s . The teacher , Mr Ian Stevenson eventually taught my three boys Judo at his club in Gt Ayton and he was still going strong in his 80s.
Thanks again Stephen, fascinating pictures as usual
Thank you Paul, I grew up in Doggy and have great memories of how it was in the 60's and 70's, sadly it's declined and is not the place I recognise from my childhood.
The old places may have vanished from the earth but your photos bring them back again if only for a brief moment. There's something nostalgic about it , looking at the old pictures transports one back in time and just for a moment it sparks long forgotten memories, strangely comforting.
Yes Paul, photos, a familiar smell or even an old song have that affect on me too.
I lived in Hankin rd ( the Jovial monk is on the corner) in 1976 and saw North Ormesby and South Bank devastated. I remember getting the trackless from doggy to South Bank often, as I had an uncle that lived in North St, both long gone. I have lived in New Zealand since 1985, Maggy Thatcher had a bit to do with me moving..... Great photos, thanks for sharing. Cheers, Colin Morley
Thank you Colin, yes the Iron Lady was not kind to our area,
You can come back now, she's gone.
@@DavidSmith-fn8ur Love it ! LOL
@@jcmimages9729 I walk passed the Monk every day. All different now but still quite grim. Think you made the right choice escaping Thatcher's Britain. I firmly believe that we are still feeling the tremors of her evil dynasty today.
I lived in Hankin Road too! From about 1989-99. They were still knocking things down when I was there.
What a great hobby you have Stephen !
It is, also it combines my interests in local history and photography.
Great video mate so many memories came back.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you very much for your videos about Middlesbrough!
You're most welcome Adam.
Hi Stephen, I lived at 1 Alphonsus st for many years and remember the Smithy at the bottom of Smeaton st. We were moved out for the new bridge but by then I was in the Army. I have lived in Australia for 47 years and really enjoyed seeing the slides. Thank you. Graham
Hi Graham, I'm happy you're enjoying these slideshow videos. Did you have a relative called Nigel Porter who will be in his early 60's now ?
Stephen MacKenzie Nigel is my youngest brother. How do you know him?
@@grahamporter4095 I lived in Doggy in the 60's and remembered him from then.
Nigel got married had a few kids. He went into nursing and taught in university, wrote some books and surprised us by becoming a Vicar. He is now Reverand Nigel Porter and is on the Isle of Wight.
@@grahamporter4095, Wow he's the first childhood acquaintance who has taken holy orders, it's nice to find out what happened to all the pals from the past.
Great work love all of it
Thanks David 👍
Such an interesting video. Brings back some special memories.
Thanks, glad about the memories.
Great video and some lovely photos. Not from that part of Yorkshire but I like seeing ,then and now photos. Great job.
Thank you Ian 👍
not Yorkshire though is it lad
@@isaiahjones8731 Don't get me going mate. Of course it's Yorkshire. Yorkshire have played at 3 grounds in Middlesbrough over the years. The Yorkshire Ridings were never abolished in 1974. They are as much today as they ever were .Same with the county palentine of Lancashire.
@@ianbennett1491 everybody here considers ourself part of North East / Teesside / TT&W; we are distinctly different from Yorkshire in culture, accent and history
@@isaiahjones8731 Middlesbrough is in Yorkshire. No matter how you try and sugar it.All Yorkshire accents are different.Have a good day lsaiah.
I spent a couple of hours every Saturday at Lawson school, twelve weeks to be exact. good video by the way.
Thanks James.
i went to North Ormesby school ,but never seen it in your video ,on the corner of westbourne grove where the Trolly buses turned round ;
Malcolm, there are only a few photo's of Smeaton Street school and because of the layout of the A66 bypass getting a "now" photo from the exact position would be dangerous or impossible.
In the future these new buildings that we see as eyesores will be getting demolished and on a site just like this one people will be saying omg leave them alone it's our heritage they are beautiful old buildings .I'm just glad they will be able to look back and see what beautiful old buildings they replaced all over the town .
I grew up on Thomas st, used to go to the pav every school holidays, got my first pint in the crown and mitre (not saying what age) things have definitely changed, not sure if it’s for the better!
Definitely not for the better Alan 😥
@@BigMack1959 Yeah think your right, the market place is unrecognisable, only thing the same is the church!
I’ve not been back in over 25 years, will need to bring my kids with me and do a walk down memory lane.
Great videos!
@@alanbircham2503 👍
well done to the council for knocking down such beautiful buildings and memories and replace them all with an area of shit !! very happy memories of growing up in doggy, breaks my heart going anywhere near the place now.
I walk through Doggy twice a month and it breaks my heart too.
Thanks again Stephen. I grew up in Doggy in the 40os and 50s. It was a great community and I have lovely warm
memories of the place... all sadly dashed by the Great Destroyer... Socialism! The Curse of the West!
You're most welcome Ken I'm glad you liked the video.
Half off it, I do remember because I use to live in North ormesby , that's where I grow up, But didn't know about the chapel round the corner
great video ste
Thanks Barrrie
Well done Stephen
Thank you Pam, but it's thanks to everyone, you included, that posts these old photos that enables me to make the Then & Now photos and videos
I worked for the Keepmoat Development on the market place,I met a lot of the old residents from north Ormesby there abouts, made a lot of friends who had lived there for years, its a shame how neighbourhoods are destroyed by the so called town planners for the better.
Buildings can be rebuilt but once a community has been destroyed it's gone forever. These town planners never take the human element into consideration.
hi dont suppose you have a photo of the mural which used to be on the wall of the borough road flyover at margaret street
Sorry Craig I don't. I've been looking for the same photo for years.
Why take down so many buildings to replace with waste land?
In this instance to improve the projected traffic flow in Middlesbrough in an age where car ownership was growing massively. I suppose many towns countrywide lost communities and housing for the same reason.
So sad to see all these buildings full of character, life and history just vanish.
A totally different place now with very little community spirit these days Adam.
I definitely sense that whenever I go back. I hope it can be reclaimed somehow...doubtful, but I really do hope!
What character North Oremsby had a minute in
Would it be possible to obtain a stand alone copy of the photo of Westbourne Road 1906?
Thanks
Hi David, are you the same David Smith who is a member of the Memories Of Middlesbrough Facebook group ? If so I can send you a FB "friend" request and once accepted will be able to message you the photo.
@@BigMack1959 thanks for the reply Stephen..... not that I am aware. I live near to the location and would love a copy if you could think of another way? If not don't worry, thanks again.
@@DavidSmith-fn8ur I've put the photo in a shareable folder in my Google Drive where it can be downloaded. To access this photo click on the link below. I hope this solves the problem.

@@BigMack1959 Worked a treat, thank you. Keep up the good work!
@@BigMack1959 BTW any idea what the black figure against the wall is?
All I can say is the planners should be ashamed at how much of our heritage has been demolished.
Helloo I would love to watch your videos from Boro back in the day but the music you use is so depressing I can't watch a full video 😞 you never thought of removing it or putting something more cheerful to listen to
So so sad knocked down some gorgeous buildings but not replaced them with anything but car parks the local authority have destroyed doggy
In the early 70's I would say about a quarter of the buildings in Doggy were compulsory purchased then demolished by the local authority to make way for the construction of the A66 and the flyover. Many born and bred families were uprooted and scattered across various estates in Middlesbrough. This had a devastating effect on the community and the decline started then.
Not the local authority - it was the Labour lot that ran it. You hot what you voted for.l
I must be a minority but I like that old brickwork and architecture, compared to the health village which Imo is an ugly mess.
I doubt that you are in the minority Dan, the health village in my opinion looks like a temporary pre-fab and totally out of place with the rest of the area.
@@BigMack1959 You're right there, same with the new maisonettes, I mean come on, blue houses😆 great videos though, makes lockdown more bareable.
Thanks Dan.
Wish I around in those early days nothing but greed and selfishness has taken over
It seems like everything has gotten uglier through the destructions and rebuildings..Not uncommon - but A shame.
So sad.
All the cultural meeting places, schools and hospitals have been replaced by blandness or inferior looking flat roof huts.
Yes and they wonder why the community spirit is at an al time low now 😥
Full of bagheads now
Modern architects seem to lack imagination, or the government which sponsors these new-fangled slums are incredibly cheap.
Boxes for people to exist in ?
great stuff stephen.....labour councils have always been very good at demolishing things & ruining the town
Doggy certainly got the dirty end if the stick when the A66 cut a swathe through it.
