In a nutshell, I ‘m an avid dumpster diver, scrapper, picker, treasure hunter and underwater connoisseur. I prowl the city streets in search of dumpster loot, curbside treasures & scrap metal as well as scour the river bottoms for lost valuables during the summer months when I can scrounge up enough money for gas. I work for a major university and I see stuff like this in the dumpster all the time. The dumpsters are behind lock gates and heavily patrolled. There was a homeless organization that was going to food dumpster and pulling out fresh food and preparing it for the homeless until the supermarket found out and lock them down. It's a shame we don't recycle.
Yeah we're a wasteful society. They'd rather see that food rot than go to a hungry mouth... :( Sad stuff.
I understand your concern. I stopped to check out a dumpster behind our local Community Foundation and found bag after bag of food. Not just canned goods. Fresh stuff. I was stunned. Fresh cauliflower and tomatoes, baby spinach, spicy pumpkin ravioli, etc.....
If someone is looking for food in a dumpster it should be a crime to keep them out. The amount of things that could be used reused or recycled that end up in the landfill is criminal in America.
Ask a local food bank to contact the facilities manager about picking up the food, they could both get some pretty good publicity for their efforts, and help a lot of people in need!
School systems are just as bad. I worked for several different schools and they are all the same. The more they order and say they use the more the govt allows them to increase following year. So at end of school yr employees have to clean out storage rooms and divide up leftover food thats not used for after school programs or morning breakfasts,etc.
And those children those only meal maybe be the one they get from school wont be able to take home leftovers from the days lunch even at a very reduced price. Govt says throw away.

I watched this video already and wanted to show it to my wife so we watched most of it again. As you were slinging those stepper motors into the back of Dottie my wife turned to me and said we have got to get a truck.

Those crates with the solid wood sides and the separated boards on the bottom; would make amazing small raised beds for gardening.
I would love to find something like that. As long as it is heat treated and not chemically treated.
Imagine a world where everyone has the same kindness, drive, work ethic, and upbeat attitude that Mike has!
We could all be advocates, mentors, leaders (not based on money, but on capability), and forward-thinking good citizens. I really admire him but at the same time I see the glaring flaws of humankind in every dumpster.
Yeah, we could all quit our jobs and raid dumpsters for a living, and in 20 years we'd be a third world country.
Like you said Mike, if you weren't doing this, all that stuff would be going to LANDFILL! That's good work you're doing.

Keep all of the glasses that you find, and at the end of the year, the Lions Club will be glad to take them.... they are reworked and given to kids and senior citizens that are in need of glasses. You can also drop them off at different optician offices and that collect them for the Lions Club.
I was trying to help push that big machine up. Haha.

I'd definitely try selling the boxes of NOS stepper motors online. If they're not seized (try turning a loose one), they probably used quality lubricant and should essentially be as good as new.
PileOfEmptyTapes Sitting for 20 years will likely run good as new as long is it wasn’t stored somewhere with particles in the air.
Otherwise those motors will cause an ungodly headache for whoever installs them

I LOVE your vids man! Don't scrap the motors! sell them ebay or find a buyer. I would buy them but im in California. 50 dollars for all in scrap is nothing.

i like your attitude, most people look down on people for doing this kinda stuff. i just got back with my second load of "curbside treasure hunting" at 3:30 in the morning. i zig-zag thru the upidy neighborhoods when the "HOA" allows them to put their stuff out.. i'm mostly hunting flat screen tv's, stereos, speaker, computers etc.... but i don't mind pressure washers, compressors, weed eaters, lawn mowers and chain saw jumping up in the back of the truck..
I loved that small crate. It was exactly what I’ve been looking for. Sand it, stain it and polyurethane coat it and it would make the perfect planter for y herb garden. I grow it all .❤️

Scrap ben has nothing but metal and that what you are in is trash going to the land fill. You are doing nothing wrong, keep doing what you're doing.

selle'm "craigslist hunter" did a vid talking about getting an item you have multiples of for your daily seller on ebay. i'd bet people building their own 3d printers would buy the hell out of those 12 volt steppers...

ehhh we tend to use 24v now but yet they definitely have value!
Scraping them is okay but you might find trouble coming your way selling them, any company should be fine with them being recycled as this avoids landfill
@@brianchester4218 Selling them should be completely free and clear. It's a public. In public space dumpster that he has a legal right to access. They threw it away and abandoned any claims of ownership to it when they did that. Plus There are 20 year old that stepper motor. :-) no one's going to care. :-)

Those solid wall crates with slats on the bottom would work well for raised flower or vegie gardens. You could sell them $35-$50 a crate. So nice pocket change. Just a thought.

Yes Indeed and not enough retiring Eye Doctors wind up ridding themselves in the trash like everyone else. I grew up in Optical stores .
Sadly the company by policy could not scrap the metal. Same thing happened when I was in the Army Guard. We filled a 40 yard dumpster so full of scrap it was to heavy to they had to bring out a second one. We wanted to scrap it and put the money in our family support fund. I’m sure the trash company scrapped it. But truth is people like Mike help keep that landfills from filling up with this stuff. Glad you found this and going to make some money off it.
The time will come when companies buy land fills to mine them.

silver block with holes is a half a tubing flair kit, what you need is a swing arm hand crank crane and a mount you can drop it in on the side of the truck. Then you can just pull it out from behind the seat or off the side and crank the heave stuff up into Dottie. Some air bags on Dottie will increase your weight capacity by a bunch

motor bands.. a ton of angle drives or reduction gears.,,ecm motors out the yingyang... that stuff is $$$$..jackpot..
The reduction gears thing, what is the ratio 40:1 would make them great for small divided heads for small lathes

I mean if u can find the right buyer but as a scrapper myself I come across a ton of big money vintage drill presses vises anvils old brass door handles lamps my kids all 4 of them each have their own bike we have mini bike frames that I built up with harbor freight engines lol tons of stuff u name it I come across it and it comes down to space and time do u have the space to store it until you can sell it also do u flea market yardsales ebay etc it all takes time so yeah unless its worth big money u have to keep it moving!

You should start an "Odd Things You Need" store. Lots of things you run across that you can't scrap could possibly be things that someone needs and can't find! Hey, it would be extra money in your pocket. Run it out of your garage for no overhead. A stepper motor can run up to 14 dollars each, depending what kind you have.
