  • In this video I will forge, finish and test a full tang parang knife. I test the knife for it's intended use. Cutting and chopping brush and limbs down to small tasks including batoning wood.

    I’d like to see you do a seax. That’s my favorite blade design and I think it’s pretty good for general use but can also be used as an effective weapon.

      I like them too. And there are several versions to choose from. I've made a couple in the 18" range. I'll have to make one for the channel. Thanks!

    Thanks Tony. That was a great and fun video. Definitely looking forward to seeing the next one you do. Not sure of the exact name but from what I've been able to find id love to see your rendition of the California bowie. If you look up Burt fosters "forgotten bowie" that is the style I'm thinking of. Obviously you don't have to in any way shape or form I just personally love the shape of it. Thanks again and look forward to seeing what you come out with next. Happy hammering

    Ah! Swinging a long blade to slash and chop some brush is always fun and never really work... although it can become physically demanding when getting over enthusiast swinging the long blade...
    In a survival situation, it would be very important to keep in mind not to sweat as it's a rapid loss of water and gets clothes wet which in turn increases the risk of hypothermia... but slashing vegetation with a long blade is so much fun.
    BTW, the guy with a yellow T-shirt at the beginning of the video really knows what he's doing, come on Tony! 😂
    Really nice parang!

      Yes fun and effective. Having experienced 3 major instances of survival in the remote Louisiana Atchafalaya swamp I can tell you that it was no fun but having had a machete was a life savor. None of it included making trinkets and furniture like many think survival is. Also the cutting test in this video does not represent a serious survival situation. In the area I live in, it’s hot and lush vegetation. Not the Rockies with old man’s beard and Burch bark. Cypress swamps with palmetto floors. Places you can’t crawl through. This is what the parang and machete is made for and it is all I need. But it wasn’t fun at the time I was lost in the swamp those times but critical to make it through swamp, build shelter and clean fish. It does it all. 😉

    • @S.Vallieres
      @S.Vallieres 2 месяца назад +1

      Oh man! Surviving on a couple of occasions in remote Louisiana swamp must indeed have been ordeals. I grew up in northern Quebec and in late spring and for a good part of summer there are so many mosquitos and black flies that just breathing with the mouth open is enough to swallow many (by the wrong pipe!), I can imagine it's similar in the Louisiana swamp. Moreover, it must be so hot and humid in your area which is an additional difficulty. It's also infested by many pathogens and parasites... And, watch out for gators! A very difficult place to survive...
      Yeah, making trinkets, carving spoons and bowls belong more to bushcrafting and outdoor lifestyle than survival. If it's somewhat comfortable and enjoyable, it's anything but survival!
      Well, I'm glad you made it through.

    • @TonySeverioKnives
      @TonySeverioKnives  2 месяца назад

      @S.Vallieres yes the mosquitos and black nats are pretty horrible. Have completely cite yourself in mud. Not entertaining for sure. The only thing that works at night, when planned, is a zip up hammock with a screen. Gators and snakes are a threat but they are great food too. 😁

      Gators and snakes... I've never had the opportunity to eat any, please tell me: Do they taste like chicken or not?
      To get back on long blades, have you ever used AEB-L for a Parang or a machete? Larrin Thomas/KnifeSteelNerds rates its toughness at 9/10, so gross blade breakage and edge chipping should not be an issue when HTed properly and its corrosion resistance would be a great asset, especially in your area (hot and humid)... corrosion being an edge blunting factor.

    • @TonySeverioKnives
      @TonySeverioKnives  2 месяца назад

      @S.Vallieres lol no they don’t taste like chicken. Gator has more of a fish taste.
      I have not made a parang from AEB-L but I have made several Kukris from it t. I use it a lot for hunting knives as well. It’s a great steel.

    I noticed you were using a file to hardness test, are you planning to ever get a set of Rockwell hardness testing files, or a hardness testing machine?

    • @TonySeverioKnives
      @TonySeverioKnives  11 месяцев назад +1

      I have the test files just don’t have a machine. When I’m dialing in a new procedure, I’ll take them to my BNL machine shop to use his machine. Once I’m happy with the procedure I just use the files.

      The blade is 3/16” at the handle and tapers to 1/8” at the tip. The bevel is 1” wide at the handle and 1 1/2” wide at the tip. The edge was ground to 20 thousands. Thanks!
