I think the whole Blue eyes Red eyes thing is just something that harkens all the way back to G1. Decepticons had red because red eyes are scary. Autobots had blue eyes since blue is calming. It's a reference.
Rescue Bots Boulder has Yellow eyes, Blades has Orange, and Heatwave has red, Blurr has Purple. Salvage and Hightide have green eyes. Chase and Quickshadow are the only members with blue eyes, and all of them are autobots.
Interestingly enough, in WfC and FoC red is a signature colour of the Autobots, and purple was the Decepticons'. But in the first mission of WfC Decepticon campaign we've seen yellow-coloured Autobots. Looks like the meaning of LED colour on the 'bots' body depends on the writer. Oh, by the way in "Transformers Galaxy Force" Primus himself had red eyes, and yet we have seen red eyes as a "mostly Decepticons'" feature since the G1. I think this will be a never-ending discussion.
I was looking for this comment. A lot of community ( such as G1 and IDW) Red are completely relevant with Autobots, but why the Deceptics have red optics? (In general, these Communities have other optic colored characters, but the main theme always has blue vs. red)
@@thecrimson5769 This "Blue vs Red" theme even transitioned to the FoC online multiplayer (RiP multiplayer, by the way). The LED colours matched the insignia colours, which is why Autobots had blue eyes and red LEDs while Decepticons had red eyes and purple LEDs. But as noted in the video the eye colours have exceptions
@Vector Prime Stop Motion The yellow eyed Transformers in the first mission of WFC didn’t actually fight for either side, they were neutral in the war.
@@isaacdaffer1711 I don't know. I remember seeing Autobot insignia on them, but I might be wrong about that. Maybe it's due to reuse if the texture, but who knows.
I honestly thought that the color differences were primarily due to in built protocols and nutrient availability during creation, since I've seen it a pretty common theory that optics for Cybertronians are made from crystal structures, which would be altered by presences of different metals and minerals. Energon, being a mineral itself and likely one of the most common on Cybertron, would cause blue optics to be quite common as the crystalline optic structures absorbed the mineral. Being a planet made of metal, different metals likely had different concentrations in different areas, inducing crystal color shifts depending on those concentrations- Red coming from areas with high content, other forms of blue coming from high copper content, green from low oxygen, etc etc. It provides interesting food for thought about the flora and fauna that may have occurred in different locations on Cybertron, as well as what the current colorations could tell us about where different mecha may have come from. My thought on Megatron's eye color change is A) narrative illustration/artistic license, or -if maintained- B) a combination of protocol change in the moment and later surgical alteration. Because Megatron is nothing if not an Extra B*tch.
@Astroblaze the Reality Traverser Yeah, the colors some of their eyes are might actually be colors we humans can't see, like ultraviolet and infrared, instead being presented to us humans in colors we can see. After all, which colors do Cybertronians see? The same as humans do? Or perhaps beyond that? I think it says on the wiki that G1 Skyquake can see infrared - which, the wiki then notes, means that Skyquake would be able to see a fart. XD Perhaps some Cybertronians can see more colors than others, like how some humans have normal visions while others are colorblind or even completely devoid of color and can only see black, white and gray (which is an extremely rare condition and kinda cool to think about, though still sad ofc, since they can only see these three "colors"). 0ArmoredSoul0 I also really like that mineral/metal theory of yours. It seems pretty obvious that optics aren't made of metal but instead crystal, thus making them more delicate and easier to crack/break than their metal armor. I also like the idea that Cybertronians also need to eat metal and not just Energon, more for the sake of their health than for keeping themselves functioning. Strong metals like iron, chromium, titanium and tungsten are good for their armor's integrity and for the strength of their teeth (which original purpose is to chow on Energon crystals in their raw form, I've deduced) - and softer, weaker metals like magnesium, zinc and precious metals like gold, silver, copper and platinum are good for the immune system, as precious metals are more resistant to oxidation and acid corrosion. However, because of their softness, a diet consisting of too much soft and precious metal may also cause a bot's armor to become brittle, so a bot would have to keep a consistent diet of strong and weak metals for maximum health benefits. Kinda like eating fruits, veggies and dark chocolate, as dark chocolate has plenty of health benefits but also contains unhealthy fat so it's important to eat dark chocolate with as high a cacao percentage as possible for the best effects. Not that I think about Cybertronian biology a lot or anything. Okay I do, I have much passion for this franchise. :)
I really like that idea. A theory could be made that since the majority of decepticons have red optics and came from lower casts, they may have recieved lower quality energon than autobots resulting in the eye colour differences.
theres also the point the video brought up about roles, different models would have had different default features and as you might notice quite a few decepticons are from mass produced models so any color preference in their design would have been multiplied greatly, in some of the continuities the mass produced models were treated as inferior beings so most of them would have joined the rebellion under megatron
You know I have a head cannon The optimist's eyes the actual glass part of it are yellow while the lights are blue this is because while his eyes are normally depicted as blue they are occasionally depicted as yellow Like in Transformers crime they're blue but in rescue Box they're yellow this head can and shows that in light that occasionally appear yellow like the light of Griffin rock rather than the sneaking route he does in Transformers prime in the dark where the natural blue light will shine do
I could see some color control in cybertronian anatomy on some level. With changes that can be permanent due to either an intake of certain types of energon, with the stable 'normal' types used as general food sources not having any changes, but the ones generally associated with steroids or energy drinks having a temporary change that can be permanent that goes along with the whole 'its a drug' effect. With infected, corrupted, Unicron blood/dark energon, or energon that has 'gone bad' the way food does for us could have a different eye color changing effect. Now this also could be something that they cant change as part of energon use, with variations of the same eye color they are 'born with' being something that they might be able to change like variations of each eye color being able to be changed at whim like us putting on contacts that change eye color.
Which makes no sense with a creature whose blood is blue. We associate red with rage because our blood is red. We get red in the face when angry cause of increased blood pressure and dialation of blood vessels. If Cybertronians would associate any color with rage it would be blue.
I think sometimes it's just aesthetic ✨ Knockout would tell you- Also, there was a bot who changed their eye color in TFP! Smokescreen changed from autobot blue into indigo when picking new colors for vehicle mode. So probably for some bots it's clearly an aesthetic thing.
My best guess about eye association is that either Megatron had blue eyes originally, but after Optimus was picked over him he was so angry, and vengeful that he decided to change his eye color to the same as a bot he ideologically idolized to start a movement thus leading to deceptions having red eyes. That, or Megatron always had red eyes, so anyone that joined the Deceptions made their eyes red as a symbol of their leader, but the war went on for so long that by the time Breakdown joined it was already mostly forgotten that they changed their eye colors so he, and possibly Lockdown still had their natural eyes.
Same goes for me. Because I have an OC big girl(that I haven't drawn yet) who was with the Decepticons but after seeing how insane Megatron was, broke away silently. And her eyes/optics, tho they are red, look rather trustworthy. Okay, I dont where I was going with that.
Nah I get you, designing OCs while considering Cybertronian cultural paradigms rather than human ones is really important! I have a blue-eyed monoformer psychiatrist who'd probably look very calming with her silver and turquoise paintjob to a human, but she is an extremely manipulative Decepticon who looks uncanny to her peers due to her lack of kibble.

You brought up some really good points I never even thought of before, well done! As much as we can theorize, it's most likely just so the viewers know red means evil and blue means friendly, not much more.
That's where it originated, definitely. the 80s were a time, and even when some autobots were turned "evil" they got red eyes. Theyve been using the same eye colours for three decades now, it would be weird to turn a bunch of bots whod been blue-eyed for so long red (or vice versa) I don't know what I want the cause for optic colour to be, but that's definitely where it came from.
Plus talking about Alignment, in the IDW comics "more than meets the eye" and "lost light" it's explained that to show said alignment and to prove loyalty the decepticon badges are created with a pice of the spark case of the cybertronian who wishes to join the decepticon cause

I think it could have something to do with body modification, or something like that. As it was stated in the prime universe to be a flyer meant you needed surgery. So maybe it has something to do with that, or perhaps it was changed to be the same as blaster fire, as we see all of the cons blaster fire is red, while the bots is normally blue.
I just assumed it was just Megatron intently changing it to show his disobedience with the rest of cybertron, to differentiate them with what they once were
I have a theory, all the the red eyed decepticons didnt originally have red eyes, but they changed the colour to show allegiance to megatron and his red eyes
Animated and Bayformers are the only universes actually try to make "blue eyes good, red eyes bad" a plot point. Animated when Megatron brands the Constructicons with Decepticon insignias, at which point they gain red eyes on top of traditional Constructicon colors, and the Bayverse when Optimus Prime's eyes turn red while under mind control. The Bayverse comics also had a blue-eyed Megatron before he encountered The Fallen, gaining his red eyes after coming under The Fallen's influence. I suppose the G1 episode "Attack of the Autobots" counts too, but that was honestly one of the sillier episodes, even by G1 standards, and even in G1 it wasn't a hard and fast rule (Soundwave's yellow visor coming to mind right away).
I remembered experiencing some serious cognitive dissonance when I saw the bionicle movies, in which all the toa had red eyes, but when vakama was seduced to the side of makuta, his eyes turned green. Im convinced that was majorly intended to subvert the color coding trope and I've come to appreciate that. I miss the days when subverting tropes actually had meaning.
The eye colour pretty much means nothing. Grimlock in the 4th bay movie had red eyes in both his modes. And sentinel prime still had blue eyes when he joined the cons. And devastator had green eyes, and he was a decepticon, and im pretty sure that demolisher in the 2nd bay movie had yellow eyes and Frenzy had blue eyes.

Great video 👍 my theory is that they can change their eye color unless changed by something that can corrupt the spark chamber like the dark energon and the synthetic. The reason Orion never changed his eye color is because he either never knew he had blue eyes or he always had his suspicions about megaton being a bad guy and knockout probably never changed because he accepts his past and wants to remember it almost like a lesson I love your videos
I'd assume red eyed are usually for the "drone" cast, letting them see easier in the dark energon mines. While blue eyes are seen as something "high class," so bots might change their eye colors to that just to make them look better.
My theory was always that optic colors could be tied, at least in part, to where on Cybertron a bot came from - much like race, and its physical attributes, for humans.
This was a great video, very in-depth analysis about something I'd never thought about before Like actually *never* thought about I don't even like transformers, why am I here? Again, though, great video, I was engaged the whole time
What if Cybertronians could manually change their optic-colour? That'd make sense as to why Megatron's optics changed from blue to red after Orion stepped on his speech at the council.
9:20 I think the Red eyes are kinda like Human Blood in the manner that some would be universal, and wouldn't change the eyes. Let me explain. Red Energon, could be the main fuel of the red eyed ones, which is kinda like Human Blood types in the manner that some change the Character and some don't. For Example, O blood is Very Important among Humans because it is universal, and can go with Every other blood type. Maybe the Red eyes ones are fueled by mainly Red Energon, and Regular Energon is like the Equivalent of O blood in the manner that it can enter a Cybertronian's bloodstream without changing anything. I think the blood Analogy is Logical since they always refer to Energon as "The life blood of Cybertronians."
When Megatron consumes dark energon his eyes changed purple My personal opinion was It just depends on the type of energon consumed. Rachets turned green after consuming artificial energon. I felt like blue was the least common and cheapest (why Megatron have blue eyes in the beginning was because he was a slave and probably couldn't afford the good stuff) and I imagine the decepticons being richer than autobots during the end of the war ( deceptions had the big ship and all those resources) .
I come here, expecting a rant about red eyes in all of fiction and culture, or maybe even a synthetic defending their preferred eye colour, but no, you somehow wrapped me into watching a whole-ass transformers video. Good job.
I've been really enjoying your videos lately, especially since I'm rewatching prime right now. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what if smokescreen became a prime. Not necessarily in a video, but maybe just a response to this comment.
Theory, all Cybertronian eyes are white but they have optional "contact lenses" they can choose to pop in So when Megatron went "F this" he just changed his lenses like how a goth kid applies eyeliner
but space alien no see same as we but in origin, when Transformers was first created, that was definitely the intention. We're mostly looking for in-universe reasons rn.
They have red and blue eyes bc it was a kids show, ofc they had to distinguish bad from good, and ofc you can't force a kid to get into the lord of transformers
Perhaps eye color could relate to emotion rather than personality. See, Decepticons in this continuity are angry about the corruption on Cybertron. The politicians may not have red because they are happy with their lives. And blue could also relate to other emotions like content. As for yellow, that could be just more neutral or self doubt or primitiveness or something like that. Purple could relate to sadism since it's a mix between red and blue. Just a theory. Although your idea of it just being a natural thing is more likely since there are a lot of holes in my theory.
You brought up many valid points, if we to refer continuities, in Unicron's Trilogy there were a few bots and cons that have other coloured optics, like you pointed out, blue and red being the most common. We have Bluur and Red Alert with red, Optimus with yellow and Starscream orange(later change to silver). Generally, there might be a lot of factors contributing to this phenomenon but I think if we consider how human eyes work it might be possible that is related to their CNA, an inherited trait/autosomal dominant inheritance passed down the line, the 13 Primes being the Original and all or there is an instance of a mutation happening triggering in the colour change. As a designer though, I think colours play an important role in representation and communication. In the early continuities, they opted the stereotypical colour scheme to represent the good vs. evil route. Glad they change it up over the years cause it was beginning to feel a bit racist 😂
I thought that they explained in the comics that the reason the Decepticons tend to have red optics is because they are primarily war builds and the red optic color is better at allowing them to lock onto targets. Meaning the Decepticons can actually see infrared fairly well which is a good thing if you're a 40ft tall sentient military robot. We humans just think the red eye color looks more menacing because it reminds us of the red dot that many military grade machines use to lock on a target. Yellow optics like the Predacons have tend to remind us or predators here on Earth that have yellow colored eyes. In the right light glowing blue eyes/optics can be just as creepy and menacing as red or yellow just watch "Game of Thrones".
Actually yeah, in Fall of Cybertron which is in the Aligned Continuity I think, Shockwave was a flier. I always had this weird theory that after his little last encounter with Grimlock, he decided to have some surgery to become a Tank-Type Decepticon to become both more fearful and more resilient.
Yeah I think so too. Hell, even the prime comic "rage of the dinobots" actually strengthens this theory, since they actually show he has his prime design already in most of the comic, while in some flashbacks (which are mostly scenes taken from the FOC game), he's shown with his WFC/FOC design, so yeah, he definitely did surgery on himself after grimlock bite his arm.
I have a personal theory that diffrent eye colors meant diffrent abilities, like how since seekers and most working class cybertronians had red eyes it gave them perks like how they could enhance their vision or it gave them inferred and blue eyes could maybe be able to detect energon signatures or risidual energy. Yellow eyes could just be a sign of natural strength or just a more powerful being and orange eyes could show that its a diffrent species (if that wasnt already obvious) or that its a clone considering almost all the vehicons are clones (i couldn't think of anything else that orange eyes would indicate or give) and any unnatural color is just a foreign contaminate in the body .i.e. synthetic energon and dark energon. Also the pink eyes might just show that that cybertronian could control insecticons or that they can take on more organic looking alt modess

XD
Perhaps some Cybertronians can see more colors than others, like how some humans have normal visions while others are colorblind or even completely devoid of color and can only see black, white and gray (which is an extremely rare condition and kinda cool to think about, though still sad ofc, since they can only see these three "colors").
You know I have a head cannon The optimist's eyes the actual glass part of it are yellow while the lights are blue this is because while his eyes are normally depicted as blue they are occasionally depicted as yellow Like in Transformers crime they're blue but in rescue Box they're yellow this head can and shows that in light that occasionally appear yellow like the light of Griffin rock rather than the sneaking route he does in Transformers prime in the dark where the natural blue light will shine do
I think it’s a matter, like the Bumblebee movie, where red is meant to signify rage, more so primal, deep rooted anger…
Keep in mind that movie is a different canon
picklesandbeyond I hate that ‘movie’
@Requiem Eye They just stated their opinion???

I think sometimes it's just aesthetic ✨ Knockout would tell you-
Also, there was a bot who changed their eye color in TFP! Smokescreen changed from autobot blue into indigo when picking new colors for vehicle mode. So probably for some bots it's clearly an aesthetic thing.
Oh yeah, I always thought his eyes looked slightly darker and more blue than the other Autobots' mostly cyan eyes.
@@Rubywing4 maybe a bit? Idk, but I know they changed XD
I could imagine somebot like Knockout had his eyes red for the sake of his scheme.
@@oneangryboi408 i agree but this is the first time I heard someone use "somebot" and i feel like were tumbling down the same road as bronies
People forgetting that Optimus Primal had red eyes and was leader of the Maximals.
Never thought of that before holy shit.
IIRC, aren't Silverbolt and Airazor the only Maximals without red eyes?
My oc still in the decepticons but he's natural compared to the others
Nah I get you, designing OCs while considering Cybertronian cultural paradigms rather than human ones is really important! I have a blue-eyed monoformer psychiatrist who'd probably look very calming with her silver and turquoise paintjob to a human, but she is an extremely manipulative Decepticon who looks uncanny to her peers due to her lack of kibble.

You brought up some really good points I never even thought of before, well done! As much as we can theorize, it's most likely just so the viewers know red means evil and blue means friendly, not much more.
Maybe they made the "red - bad, blue - good" just so new viewers of the series will easily understand who is what. Or purely for artistic reasons.
That's where it originated, definitely. the 80s were a time, and even when some autobots were turned "evil" they got red eyes.
Theyve been using the same eye colours for three decades now, it would be weird to turn a bunch of bots whod been blue-eyed for so long red (or vice versa)
I don't know what I want the cause for optic colour to be, but that's definitely where it came from.
@@brendathevehicon Yeah.

I like the idea of genetics, considering shock wave does draw attention to cybertronian genetics when the predacons come around.
Plot twist: RID 2015 Megatronus was actually Sideways.
there is one short but good argument, аutobot's symbol is *red*
Optimus Prime and Alpha Trion (the two greatest leaders that most Cybertronians are aware of) are primarily red and blue
With regards to Prima being an asshole to Megatronus, this is where I will further emphasize the hypocrisy of the apparent good guys. They claim to love all, yes they are suspicious of those who they consider evil, without investigating their personalities further.
the Blue vs Red thing always reminds me of "NATO vs the Soviet Union"
Where NATO is supposedly the good guys and the Soviet Union were supposedly the bad guys
Still, great video as usual.
Lol, I was thinking about that, autobots are like NATO and decepticons are like soviet union ! Soviet unions also started with ideals of freedom and equality, like the decepticons, but ended up being oppressive and evil slavers themselves.
That's probably the allegory they were going for. NATO = blue = good vs USSR = red = bad

I agree with eyes just being unique to anyone. Optimus Primal had red eyes and he wasn't evil.
I wonder if it has relation to red energon and how it can grant more power in speed but cause its hard to process they mixed it with regular energon
You only need surgery to be a flier if you were not "born" as one. Seekers were the natural fliers who got pushed into the military from creation

"and the Bayverse when Optimus Prime's eyes turn red while under mind control"

I remembered experiencing some serious cognitive dissonance when I saw the bionicle movies, in which all the toa had red eyes, but when vakama was seduced to the side of makuta, his eyes turned green. Im convinced that was majorly intended to subvert the color coding trope and I've come to appreciate that. I miss the days when subverting tropes actually had meaning.
I’m really enjoying your videos please don’t stop randomly

There's also the ability to change eye color for aesthetics through upgrades and modifications

Most Decepticons have red eyes because red eyes is quite common and most of the population was Megatron's followers
I'd assume red eyed are usually for the "drone" cast, letting them see easier in the dark energon mines. While blue eyes are seen as something "high class," so bots might change their eye colors to that just to make them look better.

Red Energon is haste not main fuel
And red energon is very rare
@@kovval8835 just like female transformers are 2 😏
When Megatron consumes dark energon his eyes changed purple My personal opinion was It just depends on the type of energon consumed.
I feel like the eye color is just for the sake of kids so they know DESE GUYS ARE GOOD, dese guys are bad

Blue eyes is a sign of peace and harmony

Perhaps eye color could relate to emotion rather than personality.
See, Decepticons in this continuity are angry about the corruption on Cybertron.
The politicians may not have red because they are happy with their lives.
And blue could also relate to other emotions like content.
As for yellow, that could be just more neutral or self doubt or primitiveness or something like that.
Purple could relate to sadism since it's a mix between red and blue.

@@emperorkumquat Correct.
Well obviously megatron awakened his sharingan during the council meeting and thats why his eyes were red
If anything I think it's just artist depictions for the audience to understand blue good guys red bad. Easy color association.
People think entirely too hard on things that don't matter.

I just noticed that optimus and megatron met the 13
Remember in Armada when Starscream's eyes were yellow? And then later on they were white? Those were interesting times.
That's because Starscream in Armada wasn't evil or even really aligned with the Decepticon cause.
Got an ad for eye drops ironically
I always assumed that eye color denoted emotional state, red meaning that the bot carried a lot of anger
The spikes probably where worn down during fighting. I think the red eyes is just from the Energon they consume.
Airachnid's eyes always looked more magenta or pink then the typical dark energon purple we see megatron's eyes turn.
When knockout turned good his eye were still red
for greens eyes is like how many years you have stay on earth for a lonnnnnnnnnnng time like lockdown and the iacon knight
Megatron's eyes are still blue he just wears red contact lenses because he thinks it looks cool.
