Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:
Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deck building game with a twist. Set on a train to hell, you’ll use tactical decision making to defend multiple vertical battlegrounds. With real time competitive multiplayer and endless replayability, Monster Train is always on time.
I'm actually surprised he managed to not proc Overgorger once.
Yup, keeps putting the gorgers at the back *facepalm*
Capacity is definitely what he needed, when he thought he didnt
he also missed the endless loop for gorger, he gains permanent upgrades which means his damage would be whatever it was when it died
yes i really want him to try this build again and get it right, seems really fun but this time the potential was unfortunately wasted
Overgorger is so broken it's just way too much fun to play with I had a run yesterday with an overgorger that had almost 500 damage by the time the final boss got to his floor.
That train steward is still waiting for the train to come pick him back up. Sad times.
The moment he took the spikes trial I knew this was no longer a speedrun.
Yeah... I don't take ANY trials on that one because the boss is so fucking brutal. It's also difficult because you cant really use any aoe on the boss since you kill the back unit, making the 5x multistrike boss have +2 damage. Idk if its just me, but I think that boss is worse than any of the final boss fights.
@@jaredrye893 Forreal. If I make it past that monster, I've basically already won. 😆
17:56 He's just stream of consciousness saying what he's doing, says "We might as well incant it on this floor" and then straight up RESPONDS TO HIMSELF lmao
*That's a good point*
The bicameral mind
I mean hes got no one to bounce a conversation off of, why can he not talk to himself
and then he proceeds to not use that spell on his incant floors for the rest of the run lol.
That hurt its like 'you just told yourself, not to do this'
@@captainxcookies9344 noooo! He already made the "mistake" before that (even though its excusable if you dont think about the mechanic), but once you learn it there just isnt any excuse to not do it :D
32:10 Trials only aply to non-boss enemys, dont play the Champion and use it only vs the boss if he's gonna die to spikes.
Such a hard thing for most people to do... not snap play Champion on turn one
I would have not taken the trial to begin with, but I think yours is the more optimal play, especially if the champion was in the stacked floor at the end
The trouble is getting it back in your hand for the boss fight. There is a decent chance but with that champion build it really needed to be played as low as possible on the train, so getting it on the pefect turn is unlikely.
Some trials do actually affect bosses (off the top of the dome piece, Armor and Spell Shield are given to the boss as well, although it could easily be a random thing as well).
Galaxy brain plays over here
"the lack of fastidioudness with which we yeeted those"
This is the most NL sentence I have ever heard
Watching nl play really makes me want to buy the game so i can actually act on everything im yelling at the screen
got another one
It is worth it though.
For the record the formula you're trying to work out at 7:13ish is (X * X + X) / 2. So (10 * 10 + 10) / 2 = 55. By doubling the stack and going from 10 to 20, the damage ends up being 210, significantly higher than simply double 55.
The misplays were strong in this one. But i still loved it!
I look forward to this video every day. Loving the series, keep it up!
Umbra + Stygian is an amazing combo, btw NL playing morsel spells on floors where you have encant enemies is a good habit to learn. Great video as usual :)
Oof
He learned it then immediately forgot it.
I was so happy when he realized he could play the spell to add morsel unit to his hand on an incant floor, then place the morsels on a floor with a gorger.
Then he promptly forgot to do that.
"Some are born POGGED some achieve POGNESS and some have POGNESS thrust upon them."
-Solaire of Astora
Hi NL, if you descend a unit on the bottom floor it gets dazed and stuck where it is for the round :) love this content and bought the game because of you, been watching for seven years and this is truly the golden age.
As always Egg astonishes us with his galaxy brain unit placement, this time by drafting 2 units that get empowered by gorge and then putting both in the back so they can't gorge at all.
Stay tuned for the next galaxy brain play, same Pog time, same Pog channel.
I was looking for a comment like this as soon as I saw the play😂
"permanent increases? naw"
When I saw him take that spikes modifier (considering his champion had 3 hp) I checked time left on video and went "ah, figures." Then he tried to double down on that by putting overgorger down and siren in front of it.
He put incant creatures on two different floors and both of them in front of Gorger creatures.
I'm just waiting for the day he starts playing the Melting Remnants. Better get a seat belt for the galaxy brain plays.
Ahoy egg, some minor tips from someone that's not necessarily a pro but that recently beat the Imp League (Ascension ranks 1-9):
- Play Shadesplitters (Also, not "Shapeshifters" like you've been calling them in the past Umbra video) on the floors with Incant triggers on your units. I know you figured it out, but it'll become important later on.
- Abuse Gorgers. Gorging is one of the most powerful mechanics in the game because nothing outside of Sweep enemies can deal with Morsels, and those are rare. Just set up a gorger on floor 3 and by the time the boss gets there (*if* it even gets there in the first place) he won't be able to do much against a 60/60 Damage Shield/Lifesteal 20 Gorger.
- Holdover is used on cheap stuff, not expensive stuff (unless that expensive stuff can clear a floor by itself like the Inferno spell from the Hellhorned faction.). A held over 1 cost Crystalis is 50 damage every turn for 1, a Titan's tooth requires a 4 mana investment and 2 turns to reach the same level of DPS. Sure, the tooth is AoE and it gets better the more the fight goes on, but you already had a Frostbite inflicting champion, you don't need to invest that much mana into some meager AoE freeze when one of the Champ's upgrades literally gives it sweep.
- Don't get fried by all of the information dump. Later on you started removing lances when you should have been removing the Shadesplitters. Let me be frank here NL, Shadesplitter * sucks * .It's a terrible card you * have * to play to make your Gorgers work, but it's never a card you want in your deck. There's a reason better Umbra cards give you 2 to 4 Morsels at once for the same price of a Shadeplitter, and it's because Morsels suck. Once you topdeck 5 of them during a bossfight on an empty floor, you'll realize that. 6 damage to the first enemy is always going to be more useful than a 3/1, 2/1, 0/2, 0/1 or 0/4 which gives minor buffs * at the end of the round. *
Anyways, loving the series, and I hope you keep it going until you reach higher "Ascension" levels, because as a StS veteran I gotta say it gives off the same feeling as tryharding through Ascension. Bye, and congrats on the egg-baby again!
Originally I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. The simplistic nature of Slay the Spire art and UI was something I was used to. But I must say I have grown to love this, and each episode is incredible NL, if we possibly in for a lets play the size of your Slay the Spire episodes, then im ready for it.
I've definitely learned to pay attention to boss mechanics before going with whatever strategy I've been working on. Half of my runs lose to Sweep or Stealth minions in ways I could have prevented had I thought about it before setting up. Haste and Spikes seem a lot more forgiving.
Yeah, sweep and stealth have destroyed me too. Also had one solid run get trashed by the final boss using sap - made the attack of my Stygian champion 0 so he didn't apply any spell weakness which killed my entire strategy for yeeting the boss with 900 damage spells. Still not sure how I could have beaten sap there....think the winning move was to see the boss had sap at the start and hit reset on the run.
@@Xenoun I just won a run against the sap boss (Covenant 0, so take it with that in mind). I had a Hellhorn champion with the slay for armour and revenge rage on the top floor but the two creatures that won it for me was a rejuvenate: Spike 2 and rejuvenate: +1 att +1 hp. Both were upgraded with the +1 capacity mega buff. Everything I had was tanky enough to survive the sap bleeding off during the final phase, and spikes were doing 60-something per hit by the time the final wave came in.
@@Xenoun Anything which boosts your attack rating since you only need Attack > Sap to keep stacking Spell weakness. Rage, Sharpen, Morsels giving attack. Possibly Silencing the boss?
Just wanted to say thank for the Pog-tastic content and for showing off this amazing game. I got it myself and having an absolutely great time. Thanks to your 9000 IQ plays I was able to win my second run.
You split what you were doing again. It was okay to have one floor the gorger and one floor incant but you grabbed a second gorger, mixed the gorger and incant floors, stopped the gorgers from gorging, and just paniced and didn't know what to do on that last fight.
NL, do not take spikes if you have a unit with very low amount of health.
Do not mix floors with conflicting goals.
And most importantly, you don't need all three floors. If you have two good floors that is usually enough to get through each fight. Also, make sure to please check if you should be incant, you could have saved the guardian at 24:27 if you cast the extra capacity on the incant floor.
I was so pogged this episode, was a very good watch. Just trying to get my egg to learn. You've got this!
"Steam roll" is that a train joke, ha ha ha! Classic.
I think NL is seriously undervaluing the Guard of the Unnamed. Incant: Gain 3 HP is fucking nutty when he's blocking for your low HP champion and while I'm only at Covenant 5 right now, if I have one I'm usually very confident Seraph won't get through him. Paired with making minor mistakes like casting spells on wrong floors or placing Overgorger in a way that it can't get Gorge triggers, I think they add up over time and risk your run.
This is exactly what I needed. Nothing better than listening to NL while grinding in a jrpg
Great episode! That gorge mechanic is very interesting, excited to see how powerful it will be in like 50 episodes when NL has mastered it. (maybe 100 episodes)
Ikr, I had gorge build with umbra champion, had +3 to all x cards artifact and had a miner morsel. I used shroud spike on miner morsel which triggered the eating 10 times so my champion gained >100 attack. It killed Seraph with 2 hits lmao
You had a pretty good thing going with the idea of a durable unit protecting your champion so he could stack up as much frostbite as possible and then a 2nd durable unit on a higher floor to stall the boss while frostbite did its work. The thorns was doom for your build but the multi strike boss there wasn't doing any favors for you either. Thinking ahead to what you want your floors to look like ideally and what alternate configurations of units will accomplish a similar effect will help you long term. I hope you keep having a fun time with the game, I'm really enjoying it myself.
NL , when you summon a morsel it counts to trigger the "incant" . So you can play the card on one level , get incant , and place the morsel on the other level. Top gains.
Love the series ! Hope you keep on playing.
Bought the game because of this series. Well and because the game is great.
Edit: 20 seconds after posting the suggestion , watched the part where he does the thing I suggested ... I`m part of the problem XD
"I'm gonna go for more HP"
Proceeds to grab more damage.
I LOVE IT.
Finally picked up Monster Train because I've been loving these videos (and Spire), and I absolutely yoted the Traitor into the shadow realm on my first run!
I really hate to be one of those people - loving the series and I'm absolutely pogged out of my gourd for more.
But a tip for NL and anyone else - something I learned with the first trial NL had here with units on all floors. Top 3 units deal 9 damage, middle floor deals 4 damage total to pyre if left to go through. So opening move here better play is destroy the 3 units at the top as it saves more damage than killing the 4 in middle. Don't always get the chance but it's a move I've memorized to make if the chance is there.
You can play the shadesplitter spell on a floor to trigger incant then play the morsels on a different floor. You can also take that emberdrain for energy card and play it on a morsel who gets eaten before the emberdrain.
I mean he remembered that for one of his turns (then went back to casting it where-ever).
He's done it again, misplaying so badly that he convinced me to buy the game out of frustration.
Calling it: this is an actual speedrun.
Damn it
I think this episode has my new favourite event in it. I might just buy this game myself to gorge (hah) myself on all that delicious lore!
It's pretty nuts how much lore there is in this for a card game. Every card single card (inc. units (and even enemies)) has its own lore entry
my favorite event has to be the Icarus one. have a few blights in your deck but you get an absolute powerhouse of a unit.
These are truly the highlight of my day
I cant wait to get that gorging class. I noticed that NL had an encant unit on the first floor and a gorge unit on his second floor, meaning he should cast the food spells on the first floor and summon them on the second. A bit of micromanaging but I can’t wait to try it myself soon.
Edit: wow NL figured it out!
He figured it out, then promptly forgot 😋
I found this combo of factions to be pretty weak, honestly, but that is how you should play them. Really, if you want to pump yourself up for the future, wait till you have these guys and the last faction. That combination gets truly bonkers.
@@joehemmann1156 C-c-c-C-c-COMBO!!! AmIright? ;)
@@joehemmann1156 its weird because he didnt really forget.. he even mentions it a couple times.. he just doesnt do it. i think its more a matter of just auto piloting the game before he really knows how everything works.
I didn't really get monster train initially, but now I'm excited for each episode, the game looks great!
Discard synergy is real tough to get rolling, but you held out like a champ. Thanks for the content as always. Stay dope.
This is my by far my new favorite series. Keep the pogs coming up Eggfather.
My only regret is not knowing the fate of that purged train steward.
For 10 days we have forded the river of pogs, sailed along a like filled to the brim with poggers, and now, on the ocean of pogs, sailing on the absolute waves and whirlpools of poggers my dude, and I wouldn’t have it any either way
I bought this game yesterday it feel like the natural step up from slay the spire formula mechanic wise.
And thx to Egg daddy showcasing very well what not to do, I'm on a win streak to covenant3 already.
Keep up the good work plz this game is great.
Good run for learning honestly. Now you know the front unit eats the morsels, and that trials can be very bad depending on your deck composition. Thorns with sweep and low-health dps is very painful. I like that you were willing to explore some options, though your deck-building was a little confused between incants, frostbite, and gorge units. Generally, stygian wants to sit with a bunch of incants on 1 floor and pop off with spells, while umbra wants to set up 2-3 floors of strong gorge boys with morsel support. They can work together but you have to think about capacity and curate the spells in your deck to consistently get morsels and incants off.
Waiting for this on pins and needles every day. Thank you for continuing the series.
Awoken stygian is really strong. Cultivating creates a super beefy shield unit and with the stygian sweep unit with the spell weakness modifier you can easily get 7-8 stacks. The most ive done so far is 600 damage with one spell
Advice:egg i think you overvalue paying for remove. A 20 damage fireball that consumes for 20g or making a train steward a good unit for 40g is a better investment then a 50g removal. If you can remove for free thats great but gold is too precious for such a small gain
10 am PST
It’s my favorite series from NL Monster Train
I straight wake up to NL’s 10am cause of quarantine letting me sleep. Best thing to wake up to ever.
Loving this series. Please keep those videos coming NL :)
loving the water cam NL
I've gotta say ryab, the titles are a fine art of toeing the line. We, as viewers, can see the length of the video, and the mentality that means you use the titles to cast doubt upon our assumption is what makes you my favorite RUclipsrs. Must be a speed run and Uncontrolled Chaos can both go either way.
People say we're in a golden age of pog, but the true pog was within us the whole time.
You actually could of won this hard, setting up on the first floor and placing that guard of the unnamed infront of your gorging unit were too huge of mistakes to slip by. That and getting greedy with thorns of course, but the difference between now and the beginning of the series is insane Keep up the great work Pog.
As a side note, you're right about spending money. You should always buy the first 2 shop upgrades, the 20 gold is negligible and it gives you a substantial increase in power.
I love you NL, it's just that sometimes I wish you could hear my screams from beyond the screen 😔
I can see your cerebrum learning real-time though: the cogs are pogging out one seed after another of what inevitably will coalesce into an unprecedented genius strat. The meme historians will forever envy that day, and I'll be here for it.
This series feels exactly like Saturday morning cartoons when i was a kid, but instead i watch a bald man ride a monster train into heck
This is a family friendly channel, please don't say h*ck.
Watching NL make mistakes, then playing the game and also making some incredibly galaxy brain level bone headed mistakes. So many things to keep track of in this game. Also I'm pogged out of my gourd
If you can recognise that you've made a mistake then you're typically already ahead of this guy xD Can't wait to see the episodes when he gets good though.
Our dude needs to remember the front unit is always the one to eat the morsels. Also on morsels have rarity, so the basic spell that creates them will usually just give the +1 energy ones and never the really good one (+5 atk +5 hp)
The sum of numbers from 1 to n is [n.(n+1)]/2
So frostbite 10 would deal (10.11)/2= 55 damage
but they are only around for 3 floors
My mans math is correct. It's also not factorial, but NL doesn't need to know
@@TheChuckNorrisinator boss relentless = >3 turns
Thanks for this!!! I hope my dumbass can remember the formula :(
@@TheChuckNorrisinator You can root enemies and move them down floors too though. Plus you can stack it on the bosses who fly up and down floors before going Relentless.
We are born of the Pog, made from it... And we will be returned to it, in time.
NL should start to focus on basic mechanics of each clan, to trigger gorge you have to put the one who you want to get the gorge stacks at THE FRONT of everyone else, as for overgorger he is pretty good but you should invest on it as soon as possible for it to work.
Another thing, the inchant mechanic, its not a must do but you would be better off placing ALL your inchant units on the same floor, for example, you could get armor +3 for your tank, dmg and hp +1 for your siren, and extra frostbite on everyone on the floor with just ONE spell card if you placed them all on the same floor. Triplicating the utility of each spell.
Getting those activated in the most resourceful way will make it much easier for you.
I’m locked in for these pogs EggFather
That factorial bit got me going. Ahh yes 10! = 10 * 9 / 2 hahahaha ohh NL.
Just so you know NL, using shadesplitter in the room with the units that have incant will trigger their buff and then you can place the Morsel wherever you want because it spawns in your hand. Also, the unit that eats the Morsels will always be the one in the front that is not another Morsel, even if it's not an Umbra unit.
I think it was a very interesting run ! Frostbite is indeed very powerful, just left to wonder how to build around it monster wise, as you mentioned at the end. Keep going, I very much appreciate your positive attitude towards attempts ! :-)
Ever shadesplitter not played on floor where guard of the unnamed was physically hurt me
the pogs just wont stop raining down from the sky, im drowning in pogs and i both despair and rejoice at the 5 day forecast of nonstop pogs
After taking the Overgorger I cringed every time he prioritized the Crucible Warden when it came to morsels. Progressive > temporary. Also a 0/15 unit with 3 capacity is awful! You need to pump it up ASAP!
Love the series!
I absolutely love the idea of the gorger units (especially the damage shield one) but i always find they're too heavy on capacity. like even in umbra with all the capacity stuff I can never really find the room for the morsels after the gorger unit is in front and the dps is in the back.
Keep up the great content, brother.
you just make the gorger the damage dealer, they are great boss killers, just need to worry about room killers on other floors
With how bad of a misplay that final fight was, it's surprising how close NL actually came to making it out alive. The frostbite + Pyre would do the EXACT amount of damage to kill the boss if one more turn passed, and the boss hit with his last multihit for the Pyre's exact health.
If the Pyre had 1 more hp, it would have finished the boss with the exact damage needed to kill it.
Spikes is the bane of Stygian’s existence. The champion just doesn’t have hp. So it hard counters.
The omega jebate title and the miss plays, juste love it NL !
Amazing speedrun!
@northernlion quick tip: when casting spells like the morsels or similar spell cads that have any effect that lands in your hand, cast then on floors with creature that has the incant ability. You trigger the incant ability, and still get the card effect into your hand. would have helped build armor stacks on your shark that much quicker.
Monster Train? More like Monster Brain on this legendary gamer
Umbra are a reverse noob trap NL. Winning with them basically relies on getting your head around how to play emberdrain cards. The secret is putting Holdover on Perils of Production.

"So 10 factorial would be what, like 34?"
@@scribey2541 Ikr? xD
How'd he even get 34 anyway?
n*(n+1)/2 would be 55. The rule he came up with of n*(n-1)/2 would be 45, and factorial is 3,628,800.
@@nomoturtle1788 he was adding the numbers individually. 19 (10+9), 27 (19+8), 34 (27+7)
Just wanted to point out that the Cruicible Collector is typically a better tank than the Cruicible Warden. The main difference being that Collector just has to live through all the damage coming in then will heal right back up with lifesteal, while the warden loses 1 damage shield for every hit coming its way. Also maybe stick with a gameplan, NL had the opportunity to put +50 hp on his tank but split it up to make them both a bit worse.
Loved the gameplay NL. Need my dose of monster train besides playing it :)
This man has embraced the meme, this man has become the meme, this man has conquered the meme.
Way to go mr. Egg
I've been loving this monster train series.
It's pogged up on a Monday morning thank you for the blessed Monster Train run, NL!
Hey nl, ive been loving monster train, keep up the great videos
Can't wait until he discovers the 'Resin Removal' card
NL pulling out the wrong use of Factorial, but you gotta respect the DAE attempt.
I love the morsel and feeder faction .... you played it real bad tho lol... fun watch keep it up 👍
All these factions are so cool and distinct but can still combine in cohesive ways, i have no clue how theyre gonna do the final faction
Best way to wake up is to some NL Monster Train!
Endless works very well on the siren because her stat increases carry over in the same battle!
This was a hard one to watch. That Poor Gorger XD
Too bad you didn’t proc Overgorger’s ability. GG though
A Bio Major has a breakdown doing factorial calculations ON CAMERA!
Spell weakness synergizes pretty great with awoken if you go the route that gets you near infinite stings. That being said, I personally believe the frostbite build for the stygians is way stronger and benefits greatly from the tanky units in awoken.
Hello NL, great series keep it going.
I have one question about the mechanics of the game. Wouldn't incant trigger if you would play the morsel summon spell on the level with incant units? I don't wish to backseat game I am just honestly curious?
Again great series and keep being NL that is why we come here every day.
Yes incant triggers from the spells that give you morsel units. And if only that wa sthe only issue this run...he defo needs rest, he's starting to screw up big time. Although when you play unless your runs last hours(like mine) you're bound to make mistakes. xD
Yup he even did it once actively remembering that it Incants. But he's probably recording in batch and trying to shove more info and mechanics into that shell of his.
he killed me alittle bit more inside each time he didn't cast the morsel spells on the incant level :/
Thank you for the explanations, I was just curious about the mechanics. As for it being a mistake or not I really don't care that much, it is a good game but I am watching it for NL. He could literally club a baby seal to death as long as he is giving me his voice over and banter on the side I wouldn't care 😁.
NL you have to focus on the long term instead of what is just immediately helpful!
The Spikes trial and misplaying your positions so you didn't get Gorge triggers cost you that one, unlucky - fun run tho
Hey NL loving the series, bought the game and just played my second run and won, I would recommend trying a heavy spike build as it was really fun and steam rolled everything haha
Can't wait till the Binding of Isaac titles get melded together with monster train
thanks for the company!
Classic NL! when he needs to spread thin, he goes balls in, when he needs to concentrate on a floor, he spreads all over like butter ^^
This series is the good stuff but I think you rush your plays often and they add up to bite back. At the same time this is just a game and you are always learning and doing well so it is not a big deal however slightly more careful plays would make massive differences. Anyway good video as always and let's see what spiciness happens next episode. EDIT: I saw the number 15 podcast of check the wire so I realise you get these comments a lot and there is a back log. My bad
8:05 , it's actually a +20 damage for 20 gold on helical crystals(insane vallue). Stack a spell cost reduction. You're looking at 1mana deal 70 to front enemy. Mine collapse at 3 damage(per stack) already does it job at killing of low health support minions.
