I had the opportunity to sit in a group lesson with him. I was the only one there with an acoustic guitar so he kept asking me to play chords for demonstrating that notes dont really matter as long as you end up resolving. He would ask me to turn my back an play the worst chord I could think of and no matter what he resolved the chord.
He said: "Look man, back in the day, we didn't have mixolydian flat5 melodic minor scales, we had 12 notes and the blues, and some chords to play over."
Genius.
Joe Pass blew his own hair off when he heard himself play! What a monster!
🤦♂️
These old guitarists who become virtuosos on their own without the assistance of the worlds sum of guitar knowledge on the internet at their fingertips, no pun intended, are truly impressive.
If you get Oscar Petersons respect, you're probably one of the best. Unreal skill and rivers of ideas. Unreal transcription work as well!
Keith Jarrett's version from "My Foolish Heart" is one of the most swingin and amazing renditions!
This is the first I'm seeing of Joe Pass's playing - I'm very much a metal/shred luddite. Truly jawdropping! Those transitions between runs and so many chords were performed with a fluidity and cleanliness that's just out of this world. Beautiful to behold. Thanks for the transcription, Levi!
P.S, Guitarsoles is sorely missed!
I was a metal kid when I would Joe, I loved the balls of a guy who had albums called Virtuoso! hahaha
You’ve been missing out
I still use his method books for constant refreshment and redirection, his transcriptions by Roland Leone and Alan de Mause et al are great sources of ideas.
Whilst he would teach the CAGED position he was never limited to it. He knew his Drop-2 and Drop-3 voicings and much besides, often playing rootless voicings as part of his excellent voice leading.
His functional harmony never needed to be modally conscious because he always knew what degree to start on for a particular harmonic context (G harmonic minor from the 5th for what we call Phrygian Dominant over D7, #5/b5 for example). His approach is better understood from the altered scale perspective - knowing parent keys and what tones differ in an altered or extended voicing compared to major, minor, dominant, augmented and diminished structures.
His ear was obviously an amazing asset.
He just flows and will forever be remembered as a master of his craft.
Went to see George Shearing at the Blue Note many years ago with my parents (who were friendly with him and his wife). It turned out Joe Pass was opening. Needless to say it was a great evening.
Great transcription, thank you. I saw him and Martin Taylor at the Fruitmarket, Glasgow during the Glasgow Jazz Festival, mid 90s. 👌
Wait he’s fingerpicking all of that?? What a beast
Totally agree, most under appreciated guitarist ever... pure genius him Wes Montegomery and Ted Greene and many many more the list of greats people just don't know is a crime and pretty much endless! And I mean loads of people know Django and George Benson, and they are sublime but some guys are forgotten... i mentioned Chet Atkins to a metal-head ... he said who? I said burn your gear! Great analysis... thanks!
In a world dominated by click tracks and quantizing to the beat, hearing someone stretch and compress time like Joe Pass does is so refreshing.
I remember hearing this a long time ago, and being astounded by it. But it wasn't until Rick Beato did a video on him, awhile back that I actually got to learn who Joe Pass was. Thank you again, for another flawless transcription.
Levi, a big thank you for free content. A feast for my greedy ear holes.
you're welcome dude! :)
Same as some others below, first time for me as a metal guy seeing Joe, amazing that those runs are without a pick
All Things must Joe
Love Joe Pass. So much joy and music in his playing. I love his style, and it’s really wonderful to see his work transcribed with your characteristically high quality. Thanks for your efforts and for educating us, Levi!
Joe was an incredible player with amazing technical skill and such mastery of harmony. I never tire of listening to him, such an inspiration. Great showcase Levi
Remarkable work, these videos you're doing are superb
Forget the genre... If you like outstanding guitar playing, then what's not to like? Simply sensational.
I ADORE JOE. ONE OF THE BEST EVER JAZZ GUITARISTS. THANKS FOR BRINGING HIM UP HERE 🙏👍💙
My left hand is already cramping and I'm only 30s into watching the performance
Beautiful!
I was a fan of Kessel, Martino, Benson and Grant Green in the 60s and 70s. In the mid-70s I gravitated to fusion and,, Holdsworth's singular uniqueness became my grail. Thus, I never listened to Pass until the late 90s. Of course, once I deeply listened to Joe I was completely floored - stunned as it were. After finally listening to Joe I realized he every part of his album's title, "Virtuoso!" Thank you, Lord, for all the great guitarists I had the good fortune to hear in my lifetime.
oh man! Grant Green is SUPER underrated, I want to feature him here, but have struggled to find decent video!
Pure talent. This is so great to see. Metal and Rock have their place... but Jazz is in a whole other universe.
Thanks again for the vid.
One of my all time favorite players.
Joe was amazing. I need to learn some of his stuff. Actually I just need some jazz guitar lessons in general.
magnificent 😎
I remember first hearing him on satellite TV when I was young. My dad was flicking through the channels and said “Ere! There’s a bloke who looks like Alf Garnet!”
We laughed…then sat silently as he played his incredible chord melody
aah finally!!! Thank you!
Mad respect 🙏
Ain't misbehaving, a classic
Great stuff, cheers Levi
Just INCREDIBLE!
Levi, u ever transported Lenny Breau?
CORRECT. Pass is the GOAT. PERIOD.
So odd seeing a guitarist wearing a suit and tie! ROCK!! (Well, Jazz!)
I keep wondering how he got as good as he was. Van Eps was also a monster. Not many come close
Wish I could click thumbs up twice 😊
you can't... but you can share it! ;)
🙌
That has just blown my mind. I can't decide to practice more or stick to campfire songs 🤔
love joe pass.....also love phil keaggy and anthony wilson
Hero!
Did he invent Guitar Face(tm) too?
Piano-y. A perfectly cromulent word.
hey, man, as a fellow pianote user who's also into jazz, what courses would you recommend there? I'm a but lost by the amount of options/paths to take.
and to answer the question, I don't know if he's the best (Yamandu costa comes to mind), but Joe is by far the one I listen to the most!
So, for me, Pianote isn’t the one for jazz. You’ll get some elements of it in the cocktail piano, and Jesus Molina’s course.
For jazz in been on open studio
@@LeviClay thanks for the reply! and yeah, I'd love open studio, but that's way out of my budget
@@only4crap you can get a LOT of stuff just from their RUclips channel :)
@@LeviClay and yet, that didn't cross my dumb mind hahaha
thanks
Joe once said he doesn't know how he got so good, that it was God that gavce him his ability
Love that Tele in the back hanging up, what is that?
Ahhh that’s my hybrid guitars telecaster - that’s a wild instrument, search for it on my channel
But can he play a power chord?
Joe Pass, was a very very very very bad man would make EVH shake in his boots.
He wouldn't. Music isn't a competition, you know?
Lenny breau is the greatest
I believe he did the playing for Jim Lindsey's character on The Andy Griffith Show.
The MIGHTY Joe Pass.
