Thank you. My grandfather was born in the 30s while the Depression was going on, but amazingly he got to see the Steam Era. When he was still young his family went to visit his aunts house in New Jersey. Every time he ran out into the backyard and climbed up this hill into a Railroad Yard at the time full of Steamers. One day he did get caught, but the engineers told him "Don't screw around and we'll let you keep coming back up here." He kept that promise to the very end.
It's a great machine to watch in action. The Era of Steam ended not too long ago in 1960, but due to dedicative hard work and also the tons of support and money still going towards these engines, they're still going strong.
Thanks. It cost me and three of the other friends I went with, quite a bit of money (I'd say atleast 300-350$). I'd keep an eye out though, seing that you do railfan Norfolk Southern. Now that they're back in the Steam Business it's quite possible they'll go through your area.
How fast was 765 going? Isn't it an NS rule now 40 mph speed limit for steam movements? Can't wait for the public excursions in PA this year with 765. They haven't been officially announced yet, but they're supposed to be from Lewistown to Horseshoe Curve and return, or Altoona to Lewistown and Horseshoe Curve over this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend. 765 is supposed to start pulling public excursions on NS this year, supposedly it "officially" joined the program.
Yeah, I hate CSX because they hate steam! Fat chance on running 765 through Connellsville, PA, Cumberland, MD, Harper's Ferry, WV, or the West Trenton line between Bound Brook, NJ and West Trenton, NJ where 765 ran excursions before in July, 1988 on a circle trip via Reading and Allentown. August, 1988 765 ran another trip, an out and back to Reading via Allentown. At the time, the track was all Conrail and CSX was permitting steam then, until soon after NS ditched their program end of 1994.
It is great that Norfolk Southern got the ex Pennsylvania Railroad mainline in the Conrail split-up. If CSX had gotten it, as was originally going to happen if CSX had gotten all of Conrail, we'd never see a sight like NKP 765 on the ex PRR mainline. And, NS is just a flat-out better railroad than CSX...more profitable, treat employees better, more innovative, better track maintenance...the list goes on.
YUP! CSX is the 21st Century Equivelant of Penn Central if you ask me. As for CSX being anti-steam, thats up to them and in my honest opinion let them do it, cause it only makes them look more stupid in the long run. Public Relations with CSX has been a down hill slide, there is a growing amount of people disliking them because of the stuff you stated above. Employee treatment they suck and track maintenance is indeed the worst (you can thank them for the Wreck of the Sunset Limited in Alabama).
Awesome video! I was in Altoona today and managed to get my own footage. Truly a spectacular machine!

1945 I went to work for Santa Fe Railway as a Fireman and later a Locomotive Engineer until I retired in 1986.

Unfortunatly CSX isint going to do that anytime soon. They're more focused on being a railroad business at the moment.
