- For Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s BIG NIGHT (At the Museum), Tim McGraw performs his favorite Keith Whitley song-"Don’t Close Your Eyes,” penned by Bob McDill- on the C.W. Parsons guitar that Keith Whitley bought in his home state of Kentucky for a dollar and a handshake.
McGraw idolizes Whitley, who died at age 34 after recording major country hits and bringing back into vogue the vocal styles of forerunners including Lefty Frizzell and Merle Haggard. Whitley’s early death remains an emotional topic for McGraw, who has come to the Museum in the past, after hours, to privately experience Whitley’s exhibit, “Still Rings True: The Enduring Voice of Keith Whitley.”

Hey Tim McGraw, I just wanted to let you know that Keith Whitley is smiling down on you because you saying that song so beautiful as he would’ve sang it… thanks for honoring Keith Whitley. My plan is song for all of us… he was a great loss to countrymusic and died way too young… and I’m so happy that he’s at peace now though but thanks for the song, you sang it so much like he did that it brought tears to my eyes. It was amazing. ❤️❤️

What makes Keith's version of this song so unique and amazing is you can actually hear the pain when he sings it. If you watch Keith sing it live at the Grand Ole Opry (one of his last), his voice cracks while singing that last verse. Country music lost Keith too soon, way to soon.

It's a fine tribute like you say but no-one holds a candle to Keith Whitley.
There is nothing that you cant put your own spin on that doesnt come across with so much love and care. The original is awsome and this by far is the best cover. Your muisic helps me get through many things and its artist like yourself and those before you and even the young bucks coming into the buisness that spread love through music. Thank you. I know this year is all messed up but maybe someday before i go ill finally get to see you in person or even meet you. If mount rushmore was ever to be redone, you by far Mr Mcgraw totally deserve to be a face on it. Thank you for all you do. Keith Whitley you was taken so soon but your music still lives on.

Tim, I’m 17 years old, and mildly autistic, and I was introduced to Keith Whitley a few years ago and there is something about this man’s voice and the emotion he delivers in his music that pulls everyone in.... Don’t Close Your Eyes was voted deservedly number one country song of 1988 by Billboard Magazine and I have been a Keith Whitley Super-fan for 3 years now. I have heard your story about meeting Keith and arriving in Nashville the day he died and I have heard it countless times. Country singers like you, Garth Brooks, Chris Young, Joe Nichols, Dierks Bentley and countless others wouldn’t be here today if Keith hadn’t blazed your path. The fact that you all never fail to tribute him and advance his extraordinary musical legacy through song covers, concerts and tributes makes me happy, and it is truly humbling. “I’m no stranger to the rain” is an anthem for me.. and I live that song. I love your music as well! Hope to get to Nashville someday, go to the HOF, the Museum, the Ryman and the Grand Ole Opry house someday and meet my favorite stars. Best of luck to you! I’m now trying to learn how to play the guitar, and I get better as the days go by.

I agree with you, Casey. Keith Whitley is one of those voices that you hear from your parent's or grandparent's radio and you know instantly that you're a fan for life. Today, when I hear one of his songs, I'm taken back to my childhood and the wonderful memories of listening to all sorts of great music with my mother.
I lost my mother 2 years ago, very unexpectedly, and this performance by Tim McGraw hits especially close to my heart because my mother was actually the receptionist for a Doctor who treated Tim and Faith's children whenever they were on the road touring. (Just a fun and winding connection to have with such remarkable names in Entertainment)

Tim, what a beautiful song. I’m a 30 year police veteran and have seen and been through more than I would wish on anyone. I’ve seen loss, tragedy, suicides and success with officers who deal with ptsd. Tim was on his move to nashville May 9th 1989, the very day the Country Music Family lost Keith.... His voice and legacy is being forever remembered by everyone, especially Lorrie and JesseKeith.... Tim did an amazing job, Don't Close Your Eyes still makes me cry 31 years later.... Rest With The Best Keith, you are loved and missed❤
