@@JaGGeR- been a fan of es since menkimati days. Their shoes are poorly designed this go around. I skated the accels. Laces ripped first day and everyday of skating. I am currently skating the evants and believe it or not but the actually lace loop blew out in the front towards the toes on the first day smh. Before skating es’s again I was heavily (and still am) a new balance fan. Their construction is very on point. I skated 440’s religiously then the 1010’s straight blew every other skate shoe out the water.
@@newmason5572 I'm dedicated to the 440 highs rn on my third pair just a perfect shoe, only downside is there's no toe protection. I've taken the board to my toes a few times and fkn hurts lol

Every shoe is different and different materials definitely affect fit. The 420 fits slightly bigger than some of our other shoes as a result. Support your local skate store if you still have one, we highly recommend trying on different shoes to get the right fit whenever possible.

Ben, this clip of review was one of the best one out of all the reviews you've done. I really enjoyed it this morning. And my opinion my favorite shoe is Etnies. In the basic concept of the company where they got the idea to start to sell what kind of their shoes. Which makes Etnies for sure been around since the street skateboarding at peak in 90's. I totally remember the new 1st generation of Etnies on the shelf of my local shop I'm Burbank CA. So if the entire production team is focused on certain result. It makes sense to me that they probably do better and understand better, as far as the concept of what are the needs and avoidance to come up with sick production which will work. The investment of time and effort of focus on production will result in filling the demand by supply.
I have the red ones and your review is pretty spot on about these shoes. These were my first pair of New Balance and yes, I would buy New Balance again.

I grabbed the 420’s a few months ago. Am normally a 10 in Lakai, Es, Emerica, Adidas etc. Had tried on some NB before and went a 1/2 size UP on those. Did the same thing with the 420’s. Except the were way to big. Ordered a second pair (donated the first pair) in my true size (10) and they fit great. Got them in red as well. As a fellow old man, I agree with you on how “sick” they would look in bball shorts 😂

Austin Hughes usually i skate an 8.5. I ordered a 9 because i thought they made half sizes (long story). They are a tad bigger than i like them (i like my skate shoes snug, in my normal shoes I wear a 9). I wish i would’ve gotten the 8.5 which is what i normally skate. To be really honest, one time i tried on a bunch of NB shoes in a skate shop and i DID find they all fit a little different, some were much more snug than others (like the Jamie Foys) where others fit perfect (the 288). I’m sure that’s not what you want to hear but hopefully that all helps!
I just skated the red 420s and they have a major flaw. That plasticky material on the upper didn't grip like suede does (granted I expected as much but dang they are slick), making certain tricks that I use the upper of the shoe heavily for like tweaking an ollie at full height Jiggly and untrustworthy (flip tricks worked fine, maybe not as high as normal but not much difference). I probably could've gotten used to the upper material but I put on some old suede dunks and felt the difference in the upper materials grip and couldn't go back to skating the 420's. Maybe the black pair would have a more suede like grip on the upper? And just to be clear I loved every other aspect of this shoe, great board feel for a cupsole (imo), the rubber and tread grips well and they are super comfortable!!! If they start making these with a more suede like material I probably would never skate another shoe.

Ben, i have looked at many NB running shoes in the past, tried some and once even bought a pair. They were almost always noticeably wider than the competition. NB seem to produce the more wide variety of shoes.

Switch heel manny was lit AF! I may have to give these a try. Not to mention the V word, but the Ryan Lay Etnies are also V and are super durable but they're high tops, which you might not dig.
The newest models (ATG) have WAY better geometry. They aren't stiff at all and turn super well. Almost too well, they can be kind of twitchy if you ride them loose. I dig them, but think I still prefer Indys as Indys feel more stable (smoother turn, not as..tippy?) and I've come to realize I actually LIKE the weight of Indys. Something about the way the board pops up and slaps the bottom of my foot when catching tricks, with the Mag Lights I lost that tactile feeling. Still, I'd recommend the Tensor Mag Light ATGs, pretty solid truck now.
I love the idea of the shoe because I'm vegan and want a running shoe and skate shoe in 1, but I can't get past the huge N on the side. Just is tacky looking to me

I would never recommend any skate shoe for construction work. That said, I wear skate shoes almost exclusively while doing construction 😂. But I only do light work. I wear steel to blundstones for heavier work.

I'm not moving far off indys for a while. Switching trucks messes with my progression and I'm burned out on it. I will only skate the big three( indy, thunder, venture)
i have a random question about my ankle, basically the other day i rolled it pretty good trying nosegrinds and now it doesn’t hurt ever unless i’m trying to flick my flip tricks, i can walk without pain, i can skate anything without pain as well, but if i try flip tricks it hurts and i can’t get the flick, what can i do to make it heal quicker ?
I’m not vegan. But I appreciate and durable skate shoes that are animal free. I remember having dvs shoes made from some weird synthetic suede. They were garbage. I may just pick a pair up just support em.
The weirdest thing is Marquise Henry doesn’t even smoke weed.... lol. He was here with all the New Balance guys and my homie passed him a joint and he said “I’m good, I don’t smoke”
😂 it's just marketing. That's why I took a stab at it. I have nothing against anyone who smokes but I am getting tired of being marketed to as a stoner just because I skate.
As far as build quality, NB makes the most well constructed skate shoe hands down. It's not even close.

Highly recommend the NB 255. Easily the most durable vulc I have ever skated. As you said, NB has great build quality and high comfort level.

That flat black colorway has a way grippier feel. At least for a few solid weeks.

Only the black in the softer material. I liked those teal coloured ones the best too.
