I've been on a plant based diet for more than 31 years. I'm 77 and can twerk with the best of 'em. Most of my immediate family died young-ish. They all ate lots of meat and junk food. Geez, I love these videos. I just love your organization, your presentation, your added humor, your production value and, of course your scientific analysis.
The strange thing is, keto seems to work so well. I'm leaner in my 50s than I was in my 20s doing about the same activities. Other than age, the only difference is keto. I've read all sorts of studies and research that suggest keto doesn't work, but when I read my scale, bloodwork and my waist, both suggest it does.
because a lot of studies are epidemiology based studies, they're observing and then trying to conclude. Hence a lot of nutrition studies are mostly bogus and will support whatever the funding has required them to support.
I agree. I feel overall better, have more physical and mental energy, less brain fog, better focus, and a leaner physique when I follow keto. And I love food more when I eat this way. Seems like a win/win to me.
@@biggreenblob It is odd that so much research suggests that keto doesn't work when I've seen so many others have it work long term. The relationship of carbohydrates and insulin response is well documented. The role of insulin and fat storage is as well. Maybe the studies showing it doesn't work aren't using an actual keto diet to capture the data they're wanting?
@@wisenber yes, I’ve seen many very reputable and credible individuals talk down keto as either not effective or not healthy. But, I and others can definitely attest to its effectiveness. I love it and would prefer to eat this way long-term.
I noticed most of the comment section is "I did keto and it did great for me", congratulations for that. I guess I'll try to give my experience with veganism. I'm not a bodybuilder, actually just a pretty sedentary university student. I've been sedentary nearly all my life and even though I have plans to change that I can at least say that on a vegan diet I've been maintaining a healthier weight than when I used to be vegetarian. I was a kid with Obesity and going vegan during HS did wonders for me: no more constipation, no more mucus exess, dropped like 40 pounds and became less prone to getting sick. I also see a lot of comments about not being able to drop sugar, When I went vegan and realized that 90% of the sugary things I was addicted to contained animal fats (and vegetable oils) which of course aren't healthy, I was left with dessers that were not very appealing. I realized my obsession wasn't with sugar, but with foods that both contained sugar and fat. That led to me dropping the interest on sugar naturally and I no longer have a compulsion for it. Now if I want something sweet I try incorporating to the recipe fruits as I find the taste of sugar inferior.
"I realized my obsession wasn't with sugar, but with foods that both contained sugar and fat." ----- I eat HIGH FAT and dropped 50lb this last year by eliminating sugar and processed foods (eat only whole foods) [[ PS Flour is highly processed so no bread (same for fruit juices). ]] Mainly meat (lots of fatty meat(including bacon), along with some nuts and a few vegetables and fruits. I suppose that leans toward KETOvore but with some exceptions. I had (and still have) a sweet tooth and would have had a much harder time but for "Pure Sweet" brand of powdered stevia extract. I dropped other stevia products including liquid stevia (which tastes nasty anyway) as well as other powder version that are ---mixed with other ingredients (like dextrose). Lots of butter especially for cooking. I cook pretty much only with butter and bacon grease. Never have to go hungry and am no longer on a course to obesity (just the opposite).
@@Teneab "Vegetable oils aren't really unhealthy." It depends on how they're made and with what. Many oils that are made from vegetable seeds (seed oils) can be very unhealthy. Processing is a part of the equation - a good "cold process" olive oil can be almost as good as butter, tallow or lard.
@@2Truth4Liberty Which health effects are you referring to exactly when you say "very unhealthy"? @@Teneab "Which health effects" I am referring to general inflammation and the numerous things that inflammation can cause (heart disease, cancer, dementia,etc.). And I am not talking about low/moderate consumption, but many food products now contain these oils as primary ingredients.
Hi Chris: I'm Sloane (Gary's vegetarian wife). I've never commented on Gary's work but somebody sent this to me and I feel compelled. Gary is not a perfect man but he is not the mercenary liar you present him to be in your well-produced and glossy clip. He is an investigative journalist who happened upon this subject many years ago by accident--when given the assignment by the NYT on the origins of the obesity epidemic. So he got to work. A LOT of work. And what he found in his copious research was that there was science to support what he'd discovered to be true--science that was buried (in all those old and obscure books you reference and accuse him of cherry picking). That he was paid well for a book that took him six years to write is not an indictment on his character. It amounts to less that $100,000 a year post fees and taxes to support a family of four in New York (we since moved)--hardly the money he might have made had he taken the many offers to endorse products or write fad diet books. He is aware of the moral complexity surrounding animals and the earth. He eats only humanely treated chickens and meats and always suggests others do the same when and if it is possible for them to do so. He is one man and obviously cannot solve climate change--nor should he be blamed for it. He is trying to help people suffering with obesity, not cash in. Speaking from personal experience, some people are indeed naturally thin--I don't know why this is something you argue against, I see it all the time. For those who are not, like Gary (and maybe you) different approaches to weight loss are fair game. I don't think he ever said "this is a diet everybody should be on." No, but it worked for him and it works for others and there is science to back up its validity. I understand that many people don't like his message and that's okay. I also understand that disliking his message has become an industry. That's okay too. But the accusation that he has devoted his life's work to this subject for monetary gain feels less okay. It's simply not true. Thanks.
Hi Sloane, thanks so much for weighing in. I am a great admirer of you and your many wonderful books. Throughout my investigation I couldn't stop thinking about whether Upton Sinclair's famous line (It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it) described Gary or whether two people of good faith could genuinely investigate this same science and come away with two opposing views. I will take you at your word that this wasn't a mercenary thing for Gary and it makes me feel much better. You would know better than anyone. All the best, Chris
@@Viva-Longevity Thanks Chris. I appreciate that. And nice quote! I admittedly thought it was Mencken, but Sinclair makes it that much more interesting. Gary's is in a no win situation at this point--extremism in any field is generally not received well. Whatever the "truth" I do believe, in ref to Sinclair, Gary is far too smart and has too much integrity to not understand something because his "salary" depends on it. He's a good guy and is trying to help people. I know you are as well. It's just people coming to different conclusions.
@@Viva-Longevity One more thought. He cares (quite a LOT) about people struggling with this problem of obesity and feels strongly carbs are connected to diseases of civilization. I know because these are the things that keep him up at night and that I get to hear about (also quite a LOT). As an aside, the book was turned in long before anybody had ever heard of Covid. The pub date was pushed way back precisely b/c he agreed with you re timing and insensitivity. We're all just doing the best we can. Keep well and thanks for listening (:
Oh, that's interesting about the book being written before anyone had heard of Covid - and being pushed back. Damn, now I feel rotten about that line in the video. Maybe I can pin a correction. I'll see what I can do. He does say in the book some people do well on high-fiber diets and I do say some people do well on very low carb. I just hope you get him to eat his greens. :-) Thanks for your comments. They make me feel much better. You're right, he's got a tough gig because food is so emotional and he's trying to tell scientists most of what they worked on for their careers is wrong. Tough message.
Every time I get called “naturally skinny” I just laugh. I was overweight throughout my teens and early twenties. I cut out processed foods in my mid twenties and lost the first of my weight, about ten pounds. Then went vegan and I’ve kept off my 30lb weight loss for over three years. Now it’s just habit to eat plant-based and I find it effortless to weigh 125lbs for my 5’4” frame. I love my WFPB lifestyle 💚
Same happened to me, I was the fattest kid in the whole school, now in my 40s I'm at the lower end of the normal BMI range and people say to me I'm natural slim.
I'm really happy you found a great way to get there, after eating a zero processed food and low fat low calorie diet for 5 years I hadn't lost any weight, I was bmi30. Then I went on eat to live for a year, and I lost 12 lbs but developed a few really untenable problems. So I went back to eating lean meat and some whole grains, and my weight shot back up. Then I found keto. No looking back.
@@carmendevine7244 I was on a Keto diet for 5 months a few years ago, it was the biggest mistake of my life. Low energy, Keto flu, never got really lean and several health problems developed, just terrible.
I had never read his books so I went into it thinking he might be a credible spokesman for keto. I just couldn't believe what I was reading. @@Meanbeanmachine1988 Agree! I do exactly that! I was being “amusing” with a marketing ploy for that fizzy drink company! Seems there are so many studies funded to add extracts of healthful things to unhealthy things to make them “new and improved” and suddenly healthful.
Thanks to scientists, we know more about life, our planet, and how to have a better diet. I was on Keto for about 2 yearish. I lost 50lbs, but gained 10 back when the pandemic started and my body really started to hate fat from animals. The best thing I did was get rid of processed foods which made the biggest difference. Whole foods are better for you. As for me, I have been on a whole food plant-based journey for 4 weeks and the weight is going down again, my belly does not hurt from all the fat, and I have more energy. I am still adjusting to the diet. I have 25 to 30 lbs to lose. Really, I will let my body decide on that. For now, I am on a new journey. Thank you for a great video, and a laugh or two.
That's the thing, processed "food" is something I think we can all agree on, and where we should seek common ground and push for those to be reduced in people's diets. Whether one goes vegan, vegetarian, low carb, keto or carnivore, or something in between is secondary as a whole (and probably has some individual variety on which is best).
@@defeqel6537 Yes! That is what the real food science says. Sugar and processed foods kill. As one small caveat . . . flour and seed oils are processed (i.e., contain things you would never eat as a whole food), so I would be leary of that if I was on a pure veg. diet and had problems. I am on a modified KETOvore lyfestile (that includes some nuts, fruits, vegs.) and lost 50lb in one year (after being overweight for nearly 40 years). If only I had known 40 years ago.
I reversed my type 2 diabetes within 3 months of stopping eating processed food, went low carb, went one meal a day and a lot of walking and running. My body weight dropped from 174 to 135, and my waking blood glucose was 83 this morning. Having said that, I have no idea which of my lifestyle changes did the trick. Maybe all of them. One thing that is undisputable is if I were to eat a plate of angel hair pasta, my blood glucose goes about 140. Well, that isn't good isn't it?
"One thing that is undisputable is if I were to eat a plate of angel hair pasta, my blood glucose goes about 140. Well, that isn't good isn't it?" That's because you are eating so much fat it gave you insulin resistance so you can't process carbs normally. Drop fat intake to 10-13% of calories, eat whole food carbs with lots of fiber, your insulin sensitivity will skyrocket, and you will be able to again process carbs normally. You are kind of blaming the second step in your problem (the carbs), rather than blaming the first causal step (all the fat that created the insulin resistance).
@@HealingLifeKwikly Well, since my waking blood glucose was 77 this morning, I feel it is safe to ignore your advice. Incidentally, when I got type 2 diabetes, I was on high carb and low saturated fat. So, what are you going to say about that?
@@watcherworld5873 Thanks for your reply. "Well, since my waking blood glucose was 77 this morning, I feel it is safe to ignore your advice." There's no question that you can control glucose levels eating high fat, but you still have insulin resistance amd there's no evidence the diet is safe in the long run. "Incidentally, when I got type 2 diabetes, I was on high carb and low saturated fat." I research how myths about diet are perpetuated, and based on those years of experience, odds are high that you are I are talking about very different diets. What westerners call "low-fat" diets are typically 25-30% calories from fat and 8-10% calories from saturated fat; I'm talking about 8-12% calories from fat, and only 2-4% of calories from saturated fat, so less than half the fat and saturated fat most people who say they are doing "low- fat" consume. Similarly, I'm talking about all whole foods, meaning intact grains, legumes, and fiber content of 60 g or more a day. Most western men are under 20 g of fiber a day, and still under 30 g of they add some plants. Given that research shows you can REVERSE diabetes rapidly on the diet I am talking about, I think odds are high you were eating something very different from what I'm talking about. Research also shows that insulin sensitivity is best with very low fat diets (and carb to fat ratios as high as 12 to 1 or 14 to 1) but as you up the fat and reduce the carbs, glucose curves get steadily worse. That's why people who eat a lot of fat kind of HAVE to go low carb--eating that much fat impaired created enough insulin resistance they can't process carbs normally. Take care.
@@HealingLifeKwikly You made a lot of unwarranted assumptions about my current and past diets. I was definitely on a low fat diet before. My past diet consisted primarily of pasta and a little olive oil. I love white bread, and would just eat it plain all day. My favorite breakfast during weekends was diced potatoes sautéed in canola oil. I eat it together with 2 fried eggs, picante sauce, salt and pepper. I hardly eat cake, cookie and ice cream. So, the end result was type 2 diabetes. I still have the diabetic scars on my arms. I was also slowly going blind and had a blood pressure of 200+/120+. The problem was that I did not know that my diet was causing all my health problems. My current diet is not really high fat either. I just stop avoiding saturated fats. I stop eating seed oil, and I stop eating high carb food and sugar. I do eat raw carrots and raw daikon radishes, and I eat cooked broccoli and meat. I eat over 20 eggs a week. As I said before, all my diabetic problems went away. My blood pressure is 110+/60+. My eye doctor told me that my eyesight was better than 2 years ago. I no longer fear going blind. Some of the hair on my head is returning too. Why are we speculating about long term effects of my current diet when my past diet was literally killing me? The speed at which my health improved astounded me. When I started this journey March last year, I didn't know that it would work. Well, it worked, it worked well, and it worked VERY quickly. Incidentally, my last blood glucose measurement right before breakfast was 72. Now before you started telling me that it was so low that I would go into a coma, let me tell you that I just ran 8.86 miles before breakfast. Frankly, I am not trying to push my diet on others. After researching this nonstop for 1 year, my current belief is that people need to monitor their own health using blood pressure monitor, blood glucose monitor, and sleep trackers. Then they have research solutions, and find a personalized solution that will work for them. Oh one last thing. Last March my body fat % was about 26%, today it was 7.9%.
@@watcherworld5873 "Why are we speculating about long term effects of my current diet when my past diet was literally killing me?" I'm thrilled you are getting better. Bravo for you. You posted a comment on a discussion board and I commented on it because lots of people are confused about the role of carbs in diabetes (and your comments reflected that confusion). "You made a lot of unwarranted assumptions about my current and past diets. I was definitely on a low fat diet before." Thanks your reply. I guess I did a poor job describing what I meant by a whole food, low-fat, high-fiber, plant based diet. What I am am talking about is radically different from what you ate. 1) The diet you are describing sounds like it has 3-4 times as much fat as the eating pattern I am talking about. Just your two fried eggs and potatoes would have as much fat as everything I eat ALL DAY. 2) That extra fat creates insulin resistance and makes your body unable to process carbs normally. YOU may think that was a a "low-fat" diet, and many Americans think eating 30-35% calories from fat is pretty low fat, but I am talking about a fraction of that much fat. 3) The diet I am talking about has no oil. Eating lots of oil promotes disease and insulin resistance. 4) Then you were eating white bread all day, which is pretty much the worst thing to eat once you have created insulin resistance with all that fat. 5) A slice of white bread has about .8 grams of fiber, but the bread someone eating a truly whole food diet would eat would have 5-8 times that much fiber. So a high-carb diet... as this chap is describing, is very healthy, but you have to eat very low in fat and eat whole foods. Take care, and good luck.
I started with keto to lose weight due to a fear of spiraling health issues. I've tried a lot of different diets spanning the spectrum over the years, but the carnivore/keto diet is well-aligned with my food preferences. Coupled with exercise, I was easily able to attain a calorie deficit without feeling like I was denying myself. The craving for sugar-laden processes foods went away over a few months and the weight came off. I transitioned to a low-carb diet higher in protein to supplement my strength training more effectively. I recently hiked the Colorado Trail twice (1000 miles) and have the best bloodwork ever. I'm 63, work out regulary, and test for cholesterol, A1c, etc several times a year (after 4 years on this diet I still can't believe a high fat diet is good for me!). My PCP was skeptical when I started, but the results are undeniable. Insulin sensitivity is real and damaging. I strongly believe in eating quality veggies, which are highly encouraged under keto, but I'm a big fan of good fats and quality protein too.
Losing weight is just the frosting on the cake. My main goal was to reverse type 2 diabetes and lower my A1C. Which I did by going low carb. My A1C is down to 5.4 and I lost 68 pounds.
I went on Keto with 16hr daily fasting and lost too much weight. So now I take protein supplements and work out to try and keep my weight up. It's a real struggle.
I've been on Keto for over 19 months now and love it. Tons of energy, lost 30 lbs very quickly and have maintained it for over a year. I incorporate intermittent fasting too. The issue with veganism is I can't break the sugar addiction. No way as a vegan can I break it. I've tried and utterly failed at it. My guess if those that are true vegans, they don't have a sweet tooth or are more moderate in their eating habits. Great for them. But for me, low carb has always worked. The other issue is IBS. Plant-based diets worsen the condition by 7 orders of magnitude. It's 24/7. Diarrhea 3, 4, even 6 times a day with my stomach churning all night long where my wife has to put headphones on. So I stopped eating plant-based. On Keto, IBS is still there and I have my bad days but they aren't as many and as violent. I'm also doing clean Keto, no processed foods, no seed oils, no GMO food of any kind. I also eat more veggies than I did before I went on Keto and I have zero sugar cravings. I'm also starting on weight training and have more strength than I did while going plant-based. All of my friends that are years-long vegans still have to maintain their protein needs but they are all thin, barely any muscle. I'm concerned about losing muscle tone. I intend on building muscle now that I'm holding steady at 165 and I'm 5' 10". Where I go from here is still up in the air. I like reading up on eliminating food that increases inflammation. I may add some carbs back later but they'll be low-glycemic carbs. Like berries and some starches like sweet potatoes. I also eat quite a bit of wild salmon (which isn't easy to find). Many people thing Keto is all all about meat but that isn't true. I eat more veggies now than I did before I went on Keto. Still, I have to be careful with veggies like brussel sprouts because you don't want to be near me later:-)
i agree, i find that there is a case for ketosis for people like u and me that have had sugar addictions, but i also feel like eating bacon and cheese is kind of gross... i find i really enjoy eating low NET carbs, but doing so in whole foods plant based way, and i think there's a case for that.

Keto is definitely helpful for many who try it, why it is so popular. It not only helps in losing weight, but also improves many health markers, especially for those who previously ate plenty of sugar and refined carbs + processed foods. I am not really "pure" keto, but on more of a LOW "bad" carb diet, which I find is a good - and healthier compromise/variation to keto. I do eat chicken, fish and some red meat, but also plenty of vegetables and some fruit (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries as well as apples and the occasional orange). I enjoy eggs regularly (a dozen per week) as well as heavy cream and quality cheese. I do NOT drink juice or sweetened beverages at all (opting for tea or coffee or water) and avoid bread in general EXCEPT a muti grain bread made by a company called Carbonaut, which has only 2G of net carbs per slice. I've found (and have seen many tests) where is is proven that whole wheat bread will cause a sugar spike almost as much as white bread, so I feel most breads (and cookies and cake and pies etc. should be avoided). Instead of sugar, I use monkfruit or stevia (usually combined with erythritol but with NO MATODEXTRIN OR DEXTROSE). I have been eating this way for over 2 years now, have lost AND KEPT OFF more than 50lbs and had blood work recently that confirmed all of my numbers were normal. The most dramatic improved number was my triglycerides, which were originally pretty high 3 years ago (about 190) and which I was able to bring down to an ideal 66 :) I also reversed my prediabetes in the last 3 years AND my blood pressure is now in the normal range. I agree that for many people, simply cutting sugar, refined carbohydrates and processed foods will help greatly. Fats are not bad, even saturated fats are fine here and there. They keep you full and reduce snacking / blood sugar spikes. Cholesterol in foods is fine and essential as well. For MOST people, if you get more cholesterol from your food, your body will simply produce less of it as our own bodies produce 75% of the cholesterol! Don't go crazy on saturated fats from animal sources of course, eat plenty of vegetables, tea and really dark chocolate as a treat and your health markers should improve - especially if you have been eating a traditional western diet ;)

My mind is sharp and clear and I feel 15 years younger. My energy levels are consistent at all times, no energy spikes. My stress responses are low. The changes in my body and well being have been such that it is worth me continuing. I have been doing keto for about 8 weeks. I am conscious of what I am putting into my body now ( whole foods ) where before i never was. My view of keto is that it is good for me. The fasting and keto journey is fun and I am much healthier. Also I am coeliac so the keto is not much of a step across.

I experienced ketosis in my late teens when I was practically anorexic through extreme dieting - it’s a survival mechanism and very damaging long term.
I became interested in Keto because of the many health effect of fasting, I see Keto as a way to train and prepare your body to burn fat when fasting, the current western diet didn't allow us to really do ketosis with eating around the clock and abundance of carbs, which spike Insulin and insulin is a storage hormones (among other things) .. From what I gather some people have problem with keto and fasting when they first try it because their body is not used to burning fat. So, I see it as a progression, cut sugar and refined food for a while, then increase fat intake which lower carb intake and you feel less hungry. THEN you can try fasting and it would be easier because your body is already burning fat, it can burn fat in digestion or fat in storage. The most comment I see about Keto is people that say they tried every other diet out there and no matter what weight they lost, they regain it quickly after... but in Keto they could have restricted calories diet without thinking about it because they eat to satiety, and you fell fuller faster on keto than on carb. They don't feel hunger and can keep up the diet forever, not feeling any restriction. with full of energy. and then there the fasting part, way easier ...and the benefit are HUGE. and PLEASE !... STOP linking thousand of 'old research' paper... a lot started with a LIE and guesses, and it prompted a lot of papers that are flawed at the base because they have wrong basic assumption. like they use fat as generic when compared to carbs, not differentiating about 'good' and 'bad' fat. not differentiating between virgin oil and industrial vegetal oil, look up the extraction process ! They are just starting to realize that cholesterol diet and LDL number don't really mean anything... so when papers say it's more risky because they detected higher LDL.. that are based on sandy foundation. And there is many papers that have been suppressed, hidden because they contradicted the common dogma... and big food and pharma are really not interested in financing research that will cut their profits. Artery blockage are NOT due to LDL, the LDL is more of a gauze to an deeper cause, the inflammation. it's like applying plaster to a crack on the wall this may put a bump on the wall, but the issue is the crack, not the plaster. Very nice comment from a fellow Keto user. I've been on Keto for 19 months and have maintained 165lbs at 5' 10" and I'm 56. Diabetes runs in the family but most of that is due to the dumb western diet of high carb high fat. The key is staying away from processed food and anything that contains seed oils. I've learned extra virgin olive oil is extremely important and eliminating all sugar and grains. If people knew that even whole wheat isn't good for you due to the last 70 years of genetically-modified seeds (read up on what scientists created in the 1940s) they would never touch them again. If doing bread, stay with sour dough breads. I make my own Keto bread using many different kinds of flour that are good for you and even if I wasn't on Keto, I'll never touch premade bread ever again.
But big pharmaceutical companies benefit from research that proves saturated fat to be safe, research that proves it causes clogged arteries will make people not want to buy junk food.
@@maryeverett2266 huh? big pharma SELL medication for that, and fast food chain REMOVED sat fat everywhere they can, and replaced it with ... worse (but good according to authority)
Thank you so much for your channel! I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago. As an educated man I am always searching for the truth on which diet works best. IT HAS BEEN EXHAUSTING! My A1c was 11.2 down to 6.5 mainly on Dr. McDougall's plant based diet but I have also been swayed to low carb also . It really bothers me to my core when I think I live in a country which is bought off by big business to lie about what we all should be eating. Your channel has brought me back based on current science it's back to plant based! I can't thank you enough science and the truth always win in the end! I will recommend your channel to everyone I know who wants the TRUTH!
Thanks so much, Kurtis. I’m so sorry it’s been so exhausting. 😢 Argh… I think it’s harder in the U.S. because of all the money in food marketing, lobbying, front groups, etc. I just did an episode I think you’ll like on low carb: ruclips.net/video/POhkKgBeA1A/видео.html
I worked in a food research facility run by the largest employer in that industry in Europe. The market department and food scientists came out with the idea that fats and oils should be replaced by simple carbohydrates and sugar. Why, because there was more profit! Please don’t paint all scientists as goodies. As engineers we designed plants on a small scale to determine the economics of production. I am ashamed of being a small part in this process. My message is, if it comes in a packet with a shelf life of 2 years DONT eat it. All nutrition and enzymes have been eliminated. A well respected researcher in South Africa said pointedly “ There is not enough grass fed meat and organic fruit and vegetables on the planet to feed the populace”. Hence processed food that supply chains can deliver, store and put on shelves. These serve to provide a market of sick people for the medical industry and pharmaceutical industry to keep them barely alive. They don’t want them to die as that would kill their market. Finally a word in jest, if Vegans love animals so much , why do they eat their food?
As a type 1 diabetic a keto diet really helped me control my blood sugars and I've lost 25 pounds that I've kept off for over 2 years. The other thing is that in that two plus year period my insulin usage dropped by over half. Matter of fact my weight tends to correspond to the amount of insulin I use. You should really have discussed the role of insulin in this whole thing in more depth.
Doing the 'Clean' Keto diet was the only "diet" that got me out of diabetic range and is helping lower my insulin resistance. It also helped lower my blood pressure and it has lowered/normalized my triglyceride level...all while I have been increasing my healthy fat intake and animal protein intake. The operative word here is 'HEALTHY' fats: avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, cod liver oil, avocado oil, salmon, organic nuts/seeds, organic ghee butter, organic heavy cream, etc. Another operative word is 'ORGANIC'; if you are consuming anything not organic (especially meat and dairy) you are consuming growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals and all that is what makes you sick, not the meat or diary. Regarding gout and other situations you might face when you start Keto, I've read these are detox mechanisms the body will go through and yes, you also have to watch that you are not overdoing it with certain foods. When I started Keto, my body detoxed and at first wasn't feeling so great: hot flashes, insomnia, body odor, headaches and skin rashes, which were all the ways my body was coming off carbs/sugar. Anyway, not 100% sure if Keto is for everyone or if it's for long term but can not deny it's many benefits, especially for diabetes and insulin resistance.
There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. Conversely, there are essential nutrients our bodies cannot manufacture that can only be derived from animal sources.
The author of this video seems to suggest fiber is essential, at least for gut microbes. Actually that is not true. If you had no fiber in your diet you would still have gut microbes, but your microbiome would be different from someone who was a vegetarian. Leave your milk too long in the frig and it will spoil thanks to the microbes even though it contains no fibers.
Got my T2D verdict 5 yrs ago at age 60. I checked all the boxes for the Dr's "healthy diet" = food pyramid. "So you are one of the unlucky ! Try to eat less move more to loose weight, if it does not work we have to look at medicine." Dr said. Found Keto and got glucose level under control, blood pressure, triglycerines and HDL substantially improved and BMI dropped from 30 to 24. All in 6 months. Mental and physical strength on top. Garry Taube's presentations have been one of my inspirations over the years.
"Leading" scientists sometimes have an agenda... and if science comes down to a popularity contest, you tend to get not just junk food, but junk science. A good, unbiased research scientist tries to present instead of lead... knowing that they are far from the only ones possibly capable of making reasonable conclusions about their data.
This whole discussion - largely because plant based tends to have an agenda other than health alone I'm afraid - is pretty fatuous. Anecdotal evidence that people (who aren't even claiming they were in verified ketosis) did poorly, when they may have simply not been getting enough sodium (which is ruinous for keto chompers OR just-plant chompers), or enough magnesium, if they weren't eating, say, fish, is pretty worthless. What is pretty obvious is that pure carnivore or pure plant based makes one non-exceptionally stupid... because I have not heard anyone stress that what may be ideal is eating both wild animals yet DOMESTICATED leaf plants, since the latter are not designed to poison you. And, that free range animals that don't lack triptophan (sp?) not only do not cheat eaters out of some chemical happiness, but, are not cheated out of contentment themselves... that they might never get to experience if allowances weren't made for them as an eventual food source (and, after all, none of us get to live forever). But, there may be too many humans already to feed the bulk of them optimally... and thus if we all insisted on eating optimally, a certain percentage of us would have to not be allowed to experience existence at all... so maybe ease up on the "idealism for others"? (Or maybe Don't, if it turns out that keto, or the road kill diet, or what have you, turns out to scientifically appear to be the only way to make modern-world health care economically sustainable??)
Do you have any tip on how to distinguish between the scientists and which ones are the "leading" ones? I have listened to many scientists with seemingly good credentials who say the exact opposite of each other.
@@VerySeriousUser not to mention the money in science. There's no money in long term study of healthiest diet. Or cure this with that diet studies. Cause you cant really patent a diet. Scientists need money aswell. So they will usually be payed to test a certain subject specific to a product. I learned about keto cause a friend with epilepsi has completely removed all seizures ever since he went keto
I don't know if Gary Taubes has recently jumped in into "easy money", but even if he did, it would be fool for him not to do it. Why? Most if not all low carb advocates, "experts", and "public speakers" are doing nothing but cashing in on Taubes' superb research and his books without even giving him credit. Ten years ago I read "why we get fat" and then, because it was so good, the original thick "good calories, bad calories" and found it revolutionary and completely honest. As a researcher and writer, I can confirm no one writes such books to earn easy money and Gary Taubes certainly doesn't enjoy being in the spotlight. Taubes was one of the first proposing and building a compelling alternative story of why we get fat, with loads of supporting evidence that had been neglected, and everyone else benefited from it. It's as simple as that. As a good scientist, I tested his hypothesis (and the opposite one involuntarily before) and Gary's won. In the past I had followed all advice given by the Harvard Medical School (Healthy Eating Plate), did lots of sports (running 10K often), ate fruits, vegetables, and grains, avoided fats, etc... Result? I gained around 10 kilos anyway. Probably due to stress, but also partly because of that suggested eating guideline, I was really addicted to carbs. Why not give Gary's "strange hypothesis" a shot? I did it and lost that extra weight easily in a few months, discovered extremely tasty fatty foods that were "forbidden", enjoying eating, and was never hungry. Being a scientist, it did not surprise me. I am totally used to biased grant money that expects certain results from your research, publications having become a business, cherry picking the data, and the great egos of so many "scientists" (like Ancel Keys), standing in the way of real science. What else can I say? Reading Gary Taubes' books changed my life. He deserves any money he can get by capitalizing on his previous discoveries. To be completely honest, this video distills envy and seems childish.
I don't know whether Gary is right or wrong, but keto has helped me. Maybe some people do well on carbs, but I don't. Weight loss isn't the only benefit of keto
My dad was 210 lbs when he was 60. I am 60 now and weigh 170 lbs. The difference doesn't happen by accident. My dad and I have the same frame and genetic predispositions. It takes intentionality and self-control to keep my weight near what it was in high school. Thanks for the comments about giving credit to thin people for staying thin into older age.
I'm not a fan of Taubes or anyone who uses sarcasm and derision to discuss science but Keto works for me for weight loss, lower blood sugar, better cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure.
Hahaha, yeah, Seth and I both bought 20ish books written from the 1820s to the 1970s. They are fascinating. But also humbling because they highlight how very smart people can believe such different things.
What about nadir Ali and Paul mason? I was beginning to think saturated fat was okay along with calorie restriction and fasting. They’re certainly not getting their data from the internet. Thank you for the reviews
I am a biologist and not a doctor. From the standpoint of a biologist we humans are primates. So are primates vegetarians or carnavores? The thing is they are mostly vegetarians. Our closest relative the chimpanzee is mostly a vegetarian with 94% of it's diet from plants and 6 % from animals sources. However the large intestine of humans is smaller than in chimpanzees. So to me humans should get 10 to 15 percent of their calories from animal sources and the rest from plants. Just my opinion but I think a good guess. So if you want to be a vegetarian you could exclude meat but eat some dairy products and eggs plus maybe some sardines once in awhile and the rest from plants.
I attended a vegan/vegetarian festival. The only overweight folks were vegetarian. All the vegans were thin. When a species eats its proper diet the variability in terms of thinness or fatness is negligible. How much variability is there among squirrels or horses when they are eating their natural diet? Eat as much like a primate as you can and your weight will normalize. How does a guy like Taubes, with 3 degrees, go so astray? These book sellers who tell people what they want to hear can make a ton of money. Too bad their advice kills people.
Keto is invaluable to me personally, as soon as I see my bloodglucose repond to a plant based diet in a useful way I will begin letting everyone know about it.
Im very confused from all of this, been doing keto/low carb for 2 yrs now. Absolutely changed my life, im 42 yrs type 1 diabetic with always having trouble keeping my blood glucose balance while doing carbs, had high blood pressure for 10 yrs (with 4 diff meds) and some small heart issues and depression. All gone in 2 yrs and type 1 diabetes in close to perfect balance,NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE.Well now i have high cholesterol and both my general doctor and diabetes doctor say ill get heart attack soon if i dont change my ways, cant believe this will kill me, everything is better by just not eating carbs. Wish i could find some studies between type 1 diabetes and keto, everything i find is inconclusive, guess there isnt real data anywhere yet
Cholesterol isn't the end all be all marker for heart health. It's ratios between different cholesterols and other markers. Ask to be refered to a cardiologist or go to one separately. Get an MRI on your heart and see if you are at risk of a cardiac event, if they are so sure you're going to have a heart attack.
Ask your doctor about an oxidized LDL test. What I've heard is that it's the oxidized LDL that is bad for you, but you should bring it up with your doctor and see what he or she says.
Sorry Plant Chompers I feel you didn't represent Gary's main thesis. You did nothing to address the horrible biases in the nutritional epidemiology community. I happen to agree with Gary about the obesity epidemic was caused by the health experts who blamed obesity on too many calories, saturated fat, and meat intake. The experts were silent on sugar and refined carbs. Also, that obesity is not CICO problem, its a satiety problem largely.
I think one thing we ALL (spanning all sorts of places, preferences, politics, etc.) can agree is we HATE being lied to. Thank you for doing in-depth research and presenting it to us. Bonus points for not crapping on keto people because as you stated, anyone who cuts out processed foods and loses weight gets a high five. But yes, more nuance is needed, and I feel like if anyone wants to argue the environmental impacts of diets... it's over before it even begins. Again thank you for the nuance, and thank you especially for the raw, un-doctored facts! :)
Thanks! I actually have a lot of respect for the many docs and people who cut out the Oreos and get results on keto, I just think we deserve accurate info about it and the options.
@@Viva-Longevity I completely agree. If 2020 has taught me anything, it's that nuance and context matters. Hats off to all of them, but we also need less bias discussion and more honest ones. Thank you again, hope you and your loved ones are doing well
Been whole food plant based for 6 yrs now. All my numbers went down to normal & I lost 20 lbs. I ate a lot of healthy carbs. I was always satisfied, not hungry. This diet is great for the long term, keto might be effective as well, but is not as healthy over the long run.
Very tiring narrator. He thinks he is a stand-up comedian, albeit sitting down throughout the entire video. His repetitive wise cracks confuse the listener and make him (the listener) miss the point of what is the message he (the narrator) wants to get across.
my ex was a vegan and she shamed me each time i ate a little meat......but i am allergic to plants ,nightshades, grains and was fat with RA,THYROID ISSUES,HIGH LDL,LOW HDL,HIGH TRIGLYCERIDES,119 SUGAR LEVELS AND BAD BLOOD RESULTS.After the divorce i went keto and then carnivore, and i lost 18 kilos,my RA almost dissapeard,my thyroid issues dissapeard,so did my high ldl,my hdl went 58 from 38 ,my sugar level from 119 to stady 77,and my blood results were finally almost normal. Now id i eat a salad or grains my intestines hurt and get inflamed ,my hemoroids go wild and i feel sick.I just need one day of meat eating and all comes back to feeling well.so for me at least ,95% of plants hurt me ,so do grains and i feel my best on a keto diet.Sorry but my health debunks your theories.By the way i was a great fan of Dr Greger and following his advice, had a file on my computer with his name as healthy eating only to nearly die from his ideas.Sorry but every one has to test his body and it will show him what foods it can or cannot eat.Keto saved my life and you can say whatever you want,i see the results on my body.At the end i am 58 and healthy and my vegan ex is 35 ,pale skinny sick and is going to orthopedic doctors and others trying to solve her many health issues.
Keto works for me. I'm not evangelical about it, but it just makes sense to me and it works. After 73 years of a standard western diet I lost 20kg in 18 months and my visceral fat. I'm 1.67m tall and weigh 62kg. I'm 75 and I'm continuing to fast 20 hours a day, comfortably, and I eat one meal a day. Not for everyone, but hey, what is?
I appreciate this video. Eating low-carb has worked really well for me in the last 7 years or so. But this critical examination at least suggests another path. I think this is well- done.
I started KETO last september & have lost 75 pounds. I dropped from 230+ lbs to 155 in under 6 months. Keto works! That is over 1/3 of my body weight. Im 70 & look much younger than Gary. Plus my A1c is now just above 5. My diabetes & medications are gone. 155 is my normal weight. I can now wear my 31 inch skinny jeans again and size small shirts. Male, 70+, 5'10". Keto is what I enjoy. I never eat prepared foods (ir from restaurants). I cook all fresh foods nothing processed. Remember BIG TO BACCO bought many major food companies (gen foods, kraft, etc) & loaded them eith addictive carbs instead of the nicotine in cigarettes. They lied and made low fat products selling the excess fat for profit & replacing it with high fructose corn syrup. Cook your own high fat food & you will lose weight dramatically. I walk 5-10 miles daily and eat once a day. All under the care of medical professionals.
This was actually a good rebuttal of Gary Taubes' book, great work, I guess I'll have to look further into this since I did get some information from that man. I didn't like that you made the ecological argument at the end though because it's very weak and shows a misunderstanding of the situation. What we need to change is our agriculture model to raise animals in an ecological way and also feed them properly. Thinking that growing only vegetables is going to help the environment neglects half of the equation: We need animals for manure to grow any type of plant without relying on synthetic fertilizers (which we're quickly running out of). And since animals happen to be a fantastic source of essential nutrients, we might as well benefit from it. I also don't understand why people almost always bring keto into the discussion from a weight loss perspective. I've never been in it for weight loss, it's simply the only diet I feel healthy and energetic on. I've tried vegetarian and pesco-vegetarian diets in the past and they all exacerbated my health problems because I was eating too much for what my gut could handle but I was feeling constantly hungry and craving meat nonetheless. I've also obviously done the balanced diet for most of my life with very little processed foods but still, my experience with keto is almost life-changing and I can't think of any reason that would make me go back to something else.
Very nice comment. I'm in the same league as you. I find myself very allergic to carbs, especially bread and sugar content. Keto brings me peace mentally, I eat almost once a day and I'm full of energy, and honestly, I really don't care if I'm gonna die before even the '80s.
@@blackenedblue5401 You have confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance it seems. You have to do broad research and stop calling people liars IMO. Keto and carnivore has saved so many people. If you want to eat plants then do it. Look up Jordan Petersons daughter that was dying until she went on a beef water salt diet. She stopped 15 medications, reduced depression, and reduced inflammation that was destroying her body. Truth.
Sorry, I have read both books. I’ve tried both diets. The Keto works ten times better. I didn’t fact check anything. I don’t care about references. I only care what works. The proof is in the pudding. But it’s very wrong to mislead with references.
Losing weight is fine, but what about lab results? What about atheroschlerosis, gout and other diseases caused by eating too much meat? Have you been checked?
@@EclecticianG Keto diets have been effectively used to treat gout. The problem isn't meat, it's pro-inflammatory nutrients which are often found in highly processed meats like sausages and bacon.
@@TheJezryk Of course, the problem still remains that NONE of the doctors I've seen or talked to have said to use keto for more than short-term weight loss, IF AT ALL. And, my cardiologist doesn't like it. He said, repeatedly: Mediterranean Diet.
@@EclecticianG the mediterranean diet is one of the leading contributing factors to the global diabetes epidemic that we currently face. If your cardiologist recommends that, his knowledge is clearly outdated. Even amongst doctors there is a lot of misinformation regarding nutrition because universities teach a lot of unproven nonsense that is based on a bunch of epidelomigical studies. Heck, until maybe 10ish years ago they still taught med students that eggs are unhealthy and drastically increase your blood cholesterol. Which was based on one extremely flawed american study and had been disproven by clinical trials around 2003.
I very much appreciated the definition of words. And that’s my biggest annoyance is the word carb or carbohydrate. My boss found out he had an gluten intolerance somewhat accidentally and then went around telling all of us to not eat carbs. With a carrot in one hands and a bowl of fresh fruit. 🤦🏾♂️ and I’m plant based Whole Foods and I’m telling him it’s not carbs it’s refined sugars and starches and gluten is a protein you are allergic too it’s not even a carb.
RUclips saved my life. Reading a book on weston price saved my teeth, but almost killed my vascular system. Keep making truth accessible on youtube so we can live to see our kids grow up.
Great info Chris, thanks!!! I went from 320 to 185, I’ve gained back to 230 being a flexatarian and now headed back to under 200 following the only diet I can maintain (WFPBNO) thanks to you, many of the other forum members!
When I went Keto from what most would consider a healthy diet, not only did I loose weight, but I started feeling better all around. When I tried Carnivore for 30 days (the trial never stopped), I felt even better. My bum knee that had an aching pain simply stop being a problem. My mind was clearer, and there are so many other benefits, it almost seems comical.
I went through the same process closely monitored by my Doctor, my joint pains went away and my insulin sensitivity increased, loosing body fat and increased alertness was a side benefit, later I transitioned to a low carb Mediterranean, where I am currently
Stop spreading dangerous misinformation, dude with two accounts. Depriving yourself from one of the 3 macro group is obviously detrimental to health, and very dangerous for long term health of liver and kidney. You can fool around for a short time with those, but you absolutely need them long term.
We’ll all I know is I removed all processed carbs & sugars & my weight is going down. Meat, salad, eggs, avocados…low carbs & no sugars no grains. Now I don’t even crave them.
I started Keto + Intermittent Fasting 2 months ago. In 2 months, In lost 14kgs (30 lbs). My body fat reduced from 24% to 14.8%, Muscle increased from 38% to 43%. I am more fit now than I was 20 years ago! My energy levels are up like crazy. My brain is a lot more sharper. Haters may hate but Keto + Intermittent Fasting works. Ditch the carbs folks.
You would get the same result with a crack diet or a chemotherapy. Losing weight short term is impressivr, yes, but that doesn't mean it is healthy. Throw away processed foods, yes, but stop confusing processed sugars with healthy whole carbs. There is no way depriving yourself from a macro group we evolved with for millions of years, is healthy long term nor serious.
@@v-sig2389 you clearly didn’t read what I wrote and are projecting your narrow beliefs. I clearly stated i am fitter today than 20 years ago thanks to this diet.
I would be interested in Chris's opinion of the science behind the Minnesota study. Based on the study it has been claimed that fat (including saturated fat) has no impact on heart disease. I haven't read the study, but advocates point out that it is much stronger data than the standard epidemiological studies which are often quoted, since food intake could be controlled and measured. The study is also over a long period with high test numbers, both of which suggest higher reliability in the results. Two questions: Are there flaws in the study or is it a game changer? Are both diets effective but in totally different ways ?
I'm struggling with the tone of this channel, because it seems to spend all of its time in rant mode, defensively attacking whatever isn't vegan. It's a huge turn-off, when I'm just trying to research what works for people & why -- and find myself being sucked into some kind of religious war.
Inflammation is behind a lot of our problems. Foods that raise blood sugar quickly (high glycemic index) are inflammatory, so it makes sense that people have a lot of success on Keto and it makes them feel better.
From the Taubes' blood work link "His LDL. It's 116!!!! I don't care what your LDL particle size is ect. This is going to cause heart disease!!" and "His HDL is 68 and his triglycerides are 64. His CRP actually looks decent as well. " Sorry, not sorry but particle size does matter and in fact, is critical. LDL-C is very necessary, being the main substrate of all our steroid hormones. The dark side of LDL is that it can invade blood vessel walls and cause inflammatory damage that eventually leads to occlusion that cause heart attacks, strokes, Burger's syndrome, maybe Reynaud's... BUT only the small particle LDL does this; large particle LDL very rarely does if at all. That is why some people with "healthy" low cholesterol drop dead from heart attacks. They have low LDL total but most of it is small particle. The main risk factors for cardiovascular disease are high proportion of small particle LDL, high triglycerides, and inflammation. Based on that Taubes' risk is quite low! If you care to learn about all this and how insulin resistance from high carb diets is the major cause of CVD and most other chronic health issues, my current favorite sources are Prof. Ben Bikman of BYU and Dr Peter Attia. Lots of lectures and interviews on RUclips and their own sites.
"If you care to learn about all this and how insulin resistance from high carb diets is the major cause of CVD and most other chronic health issues, my current favorite sources are Prof. Ben Bikman of BYU and Dr Peter Attia. " You can't talk intelligently about diet if you don't differentiate between healthy whole food carbs vs. unhealthy highly-refined carbs. News flash: The best diets for stopping and reversing diabetes and heart disease have over 70% of calories from whole food carbs. Also, the best experimental research show that elevated LDL is causal in heart disease, and too-high levels of either small dense or large fluffy particles are both atherogenic, with elevated small dense levels being only about 30% more atherogenic. Meanwhile, if you get your LDL into the truly normal healthy range (~35-70) arterial plaques simply don't form. Taubes' LDL is double what's normal for humans and other free-ranging mammals who don't get atherosclerosis.

I stumbled across your podcasts as I have been trying to sort out the truth between low carb and the Whole Foods plant based diets such as Dr. Gregor advocates. I did read his book and was very impressed and I was very moved by forks over knives. I have to say that the low carb approach has been very effective in my weight loss effort. I have to admit that that I love meat. At the same time I tend to accept that there is no free lunch. I find your podcasts and personality very compelling in helping me realize (like my children) that I really need to stick with the plant based approach. One of the more interesting researchers I have found is Dr. David Sinclair out of Harvard on reversing aging and he comes down on the Mediterranean diet side plus only eating one meal a day. I do like Valter Longo and other serious scientists. Thanks for helping me get real. By the way I am 73 and shooting for 100, why not.
I googled what you said to google and this study came up in the Lancet ??? "High carbohydrate intake was associated with higher risk of total mortality, whereas total fat and individual types of fat were related to lower total mortality. Total fat and types of fat were not associated with cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, or cardiovascular disease mortality, whereas saturated fat had an inverse association with stroke. Global dietary guidelines should be reconsidered in light of these findings."
evolutionary we probably did do both depending on the season, farming is only something like 8000 years old after all so we didn't exactly have massive amounts of stored foods to go around before that
I've been controlling T2 diabetes with metformin and a mostly-keto diet for a year now. My doctor is happy but I'm not. My insulin is very high (17) and I feel like crap. No more diabetes symptoms but like crap generally. Time to switch it all up. Thanks to your videos in general for emphasizing the mortality rate of eating "keto". I was particularly thrilled by your interview with the "mastering diabetes" guys. So ... time for another big dietary change. :)
Thanks Rob! Let me know how it goes. You can email me at plantchompers at gmail. I'm sure you know from the Mastering Diabetes guys, but it can take time for the body to adjust to high fiber foods.
Thank you for talking about Keto and mortality as well as the importance of eliminating or reducing processed carbs. Sounds like a good place to start.
Indeed. It is kind of silly to pitch diets against each other rather than go ahead and work on what everyone can agree on: reducing the consumption of processed "foods"
Sorry but Keto is not a diet but a healthy lifestyle, which most doctors sadly don’t acknowledge ,reversed diabetes and lost 30lbs in couple months so far, I could go on and on with the benefits of Keto,
I think that is what makes Keto so popular: quick weight loss. But I think the more important question is what our health will be after 10 years on the diet, not a few months.
I’ve done Keto for 4 years. The first year I lost 80 lbs, reversed diabetes and early onset of heart disease. At year 3 I added in intermittent fasting and I only eat real organic food. By year 4, the weight is back on and I haven’t changed my diet or fasting at all. I’m 5’6 and eat between 1200-1400 calories per day (I track my food and macros) and I just drink purified water. And I exercise. So Keto worked in the beginning but the results aren’t long lasting for me. My take-away is finding what works for me may not work for you. My journey has been maddening! I’ve decided to continue eating real food (nothing processed) stay away from added sugars, and continue with my exercising. I have really enjoyed Plant Chompers! I’ve been read all the Keto books you’ve mentioned so now I’m switching over to study the the other books that have been mentioned about the Mediterranean approach. Currently I’m reading Eat to Beat Your Diet by William W. Li, MD. Very interesting! Thanks for the interesting info!
Your 5'6 female and eat 12-14 hundred calories a day and you gained weight? I hate to break to you but your calorie counting is totally off. Either that or your intermittent fasting isn't working for you and you need to eat a bigger breakfast. But no offense just that if you REALLY are eating 1200 - 1400 calories a day at 5'6, you better check your thyroid hormone or check your calorie counting. Do you weigh your food? If you dont weigh your food and just go on whats on the lables you need to change that.
@@jasonm7684 No its the thyroid keto or any low carb sugar phobic diets destroy your thyroid levels. When your thyroid doesn't work because of dieting/calorie counting abuse you get fat. You have to restore your thyroid by letting it heal on a high sugar high carb low fat diet. No more than 10 grams of fat a day. Then you will become so skinny you will be forced to re introduce fatty foods.
@@swiftxrapid919 How do you know this is the case? Ofcourse your going to become skinny tho, your horomones will totally be destroyed along with the fact that you will go into starvation mode due to lack of protein. High carb foods are usually devoid of vital nutrients and minerals. Not to mention if your body doesn't get adequate fat/protein it basically thinks its dying.
You present a good video and it sounds like the guy you did this hit piece on is not the best advocate for anything with awful research quoting old books on anything that is based on understanding something is never a great idea. I have to say you clearly have an axe to grind and an agenda and I am not sure nutrition/heath is at the top of that pretty sure if it came tomorrow unequivocally that any diet that included Meat was the best you would still be pushing for the opposite.
It is extremely exciting and refreshing to hear an actual scientist speak on these issues. It takes time, resources, dedication, and knowhow to access the data and present it like you do. The internet is full of noise and regurgitated information (on "both sides" might I add!), so to see the quality content you are creating break out of the cacophony gives me hope that not all is lost! You are a great presenter and communicator, thank you for putting your resources and efforts toward this channel.
Thanks! I'm very aware that my own scientific knowledge is broad and not deep, so I do my best to unearth the best of them who do have great expertise on a topic. There are lots of them and many of their talks are on RUclips, but they don't get the views because few of them are good at storytelling, humor, sound, photography, etc. - and many, like Ancel Keys, have passed. I just love telling their stories if I can do them justice.
Nutrition is such a controversial topic. From my own experience as a 59 year old who strength trains: 2700ish calories each day. Carbs 288grams, protein 198grams, fats 80g. My weight stays within a 2lbs range. Makes no difference how the carbs are composed. I think there are a few things to note: exercise has benefits and not enough of us take the time to accurately measure and manage our daily diet. My diet for any given day is not an accident. It's planned and prepared in advance.
I also am fascinated by what we believe. Watched this video thinking you might make decent points. Was very disappointed as you did not provide any real information here. Blaming lighting and poor pictures on showing people who look terrible is a cheap copout. Natural food is better than processed food for sure. There is no science at all that proves either plant or meat based causes anyone to live longer and healthier, a definitive study cannot be done unless you lock people up all their lives. The simple fact that people can live without carbs or fiber absolutely brings into question whether people need them or not, and it is a fact that neither is needed to live. As far as healing the planet, let me know how that works when the soil is depleted of nutrients, which is the only place plants are going to get them to use when we eat them. Learning how to grow food of any type that works to not destroy the nature needed to keep doing it is something we need to do for sure, but it is very simple minded to think animals are destroying the world. Bottom line, eat whole foods, plant or animal based, though I still have not found out how to eat completely plant based without supplementation, or at the very least a lot of thought into the right combinations and amounts that I would need for peak health. I spent two years deciding which way to go and chose Carnivore for precisely that reason, no thought needed, each mostly meat and eat till full. Has worked beautifully for me, and every person that I know who does it. However, still not cultish about it, if you do well on plants and they work for you, go for it. Each person that picks their path should be glad that other do something else, more meat for the meat ppl, more plants for the plant ppl. We all get to the same place in the end.
Totally agree…Im animal food based but occasionally have some raw honey and fruit….Im also active and have a physical job. Eating a variety of meat and other animal foods covers the bases….
"There is no science at all that proves either plant or meat based causes anyone to live longer and healthier, a definitive study cannot be done unless you lock people up all their lives." Actually, there is lots of good science proving it is healthier to replace red meat, processed, meat, and eggs in you diet with with whole plant foods. More legumes and whole grains reduces disease and increases lifespan.
@@HealingLifeKwikly there actually is not for the very reason I gave. There is a lot of poor science and poor interpretations of science out there for sure. I have been at this heavy for almost two years and there is no case I can find for plants even being food, much less the appropriate diet for humans.
I didn't watch the video , but I did keto diet and lost weight. I continue very low carb diet because it has a positive effect on my prostatitis. Keto works for me.. That's all I care about..
I've been on Keto for over 2 years. Works great for me. I never feel hungry, I usually eat a steak for breakfast with tomatoes and mushrooms most days and no other meals but I do consume a lot of butter and cheese through the rest of the day. Your body would rather burn carbohydrates than fat so in order to enter Ketosis you have to be strict about drastically limiting carbohydrates for at least a month, if not you are not on Keto but rather a reduced carb diet. Steaks and seafood does not make for cheap living though. If you would rather eat plant matter and vegetable oil, good for you, each to their own.
Noted! Thanks! I felt a little crazy doing it because you might've noticed there were horses there and some people. They ignored me as if I was just another insane person, which I guess I am.
Fascinating video. As someone who fell into the hole of keto, and some family members as well, we are working diligently to rebuild our health. My mother and I developed hypercholesteremia and other blood markers were well off the chart. I have nothing against Taubes per se, but the bigger ones like Drs. Ken Berry and Eric Berg who really have a following. The carnivore crew take It a step further and the whole world of nutrition has become a well of confusion. I am now on a solid Mediterranean diet and will retest my labs in a few months but am grateful for information like this
You are an example of someone looking for a one size fits all "diet". Change your lifestyle, avoid the things that hurt YOU, don't accept the blanket advise from those looking to make money from selling a scheme. Keto is good, if you understand it. You should never take an actual diet from the internet/ book/ friend/ co-worker/ doctor/...etc as will work for you. DO SOME research into your own physiology/ metabolism (you will need to talk to your doctor, but understand your doctor's views. Ultimately your doctor in only a human mechanic, and will only try to fix what they know, the way they know how. Not for dietary advice, but more for understanding human physiology related to diet, check out STAN EKBERG videos. He is a keto enthusiast, but is very informative on a wide range of medical/ diet issues.
@@gc8907 I am not an example of someone looking for a one sized fits all diet. Amazing that you draw your own conclusions from one simple comment. My health took an awful turn with Leto and carnivore and just because it works for you doesn’t mean it’s suited for everyone. I simply I felt awful. I don’t base my results on my labs exclusively but truly felt perfect horrible and gave it multiple attempts for great lengths of time. I hate platforms like this where people just pass judgment based on a comment
@@AZTracyLynn There are so many keto zealots responding here that it almost makes it impossible to comment. Fruit and veggies along with beans, grains and quality protein sources are all fine food sources. Just about every quality peer reviewed paper on diets show that when accounting for calories produce the same basic results of losing fat, feeling better as well as lowering blue sugar levels and controlling lipids. Over consuming of any food no matter organic or not will cause fat storage in the human body. It's evolved to keep us alive through times of leanest and famine. The problem we have today is abundance of food and not necessarily the kind of food. There have even been studies of people eating fast food and as long as they don't over consume their bodies did fine. If you want to lose fat and be physically fit pick an eating plan that you can follow for the rest of your life that controls your caloric intake, do some cardio such as walking or bicycling and add in wight training to build muscle. Muscle will help increase your metabolism along with a myriad of other health benefits. We are omnivores and eating all kinds of food sources is fine as long as you keep caloric intake controlled. What works well for me is a high protein, low to moderate carbs and lower fat (keep unsaturated fats higher than saturated fats, with omega 3 being the most important).
Hypercholesterolemia, also called high cholesterol, is the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Sounds dangerous. Especially when you use these big long words, making it seem scarier than it actually is. Remember, it's not the amount of LDL you have, it's the size distribution.
Watching several of your videos, surprised to hear so many "health influencers" say Americans are overweight because of bad scientists. But I can't remember ever hearing a scientist say we should go by car everywhere, work so much we don't have strength to cook our own food and instead buy gigantic portions of fat, sugery fastfood. I don't live in the USA, but I have American friends and it seems to me the US is a very hard place to live in if you want to make healthier choices.
Thanks, Goran. I think so much of the problem is we have giant food companies here who are determined to sell their stuff and don't have many laws to slow them down... So they pump out a firehose of disinformation and try to discredit the scientists.
Well said. It’s not so far as a conspiracy, but it feels like the food system in America is rigged to support the hospitals. Hospitals are full of patients that ate themselves sick. In perspective, our governments shut down businesses, made us wear masks, stand six feet apart, etc to avoid COVID, but there are no restrictions on buying a half pound of ground cow and washing it down with a liter and a half of high fructose filled soda.
It seems to me it's not the experts who are pushing bad science, but rather it is those who will profit financially from it, including the vaccine autism scam so that guy could get rich off of HIS vaccine, the non-scientists who pushed the "no fat" concept so hard and so long into the public consciousness that everyone ended up going along with it, and now this guy, Taubes.
It is not hard to make healthy choices in the US. You just have to be willing to make the healthy choice. A lot of people just want to eat what they want to eat and not think about it.
@@B38pooljunky I understand why you say that but I disagree. The American educational system has been dumbed down and, even decades ago many Americans knew relatively little about science and even less about health. We believed the lies foisted on us by non-experts who pushed so hard that the media brainwashed the masses, who forced the politicians to comply to "fat free" nonsense. When a greedy expert lied to the public about MMR vaccines causing autism while saying that separate vaccinations for each were safe (so he could profit off his own separate measles vaccination), the public bought it (and caused the antivaxxer movement) and, despite multiple studies, him being barred from medicine and no the facts of his chicanery being revealed, he's STILL making money off it - as are others, and the victims are primarily those who follow that nonsense. Most Americans know little about eating correctly and, judging by how the number of obese people increased (including me), few people bother to eat right. Even when we try to eat right, it's not always easy. It doesn't help that ultra-processed foods are often deliberately designed to be addictive, and that the foods that we crave but don't want to eat require eating processed foods (e.g. fake meat products) to satisfy Choosing good food is ONLY easy if you stick to basic foods, and sometimes not even then. I only just found out that coconut meat, milk, oil and cream are bad for me. As a 100% lactose intolerant person, I've been drinking coconut milk for years and now I have atherosclerosis - a fact that was concealed by passing my stress test with USG with flying colors, but was revealed by a calcium test. I had NEVER heard of the 6 decades of studies that demonstrated that coconuts are bad for you (well, not the water) even though I'm 55. The NIH says that coconut oil is bad but palm oil is good, but the AHA says to avoid both - who's right? Then there's the question of which grains to eat (oatmeal, red, brown, black and wild rice, especially organic, for those who have gluten problems, and I'm not sure what else for the rest of us, but not corn, which is too high in omega-6, used in too many products, and has a fairly high level of sugar in it), which oils to use (olive, canola, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, corn, peanut, soybean, avocado, rice bran and sesame), which milk substitutes are safe (soy, almond, oat, flax I think), whether or not uncracked seed-covered foods are actually good for you (the seeds are useless unless you really chew them up to break the hulls), and so on. Some types of nuts are fairly bad for us, but others, like walnuts and pistachios are good. Eating only organic whole foods is easier than figuring out the marketing lies and manipulations of processed foods, but a lot of people do not have access to whole foods, and then there's all the worry about GMO and so on. Don't even get me started on all the fad diets out there, most of which are not supported by the medical community or proven by high-quality studies. Add to that the challenge of avoiding what our bodies cannot handle. Milk, in the US, is in so many products that it makes it super hard for me to find, say, cereal bars that are dairy-free AND don't taste like crap. Believe me - I've tried a wide variety, and some contain coconut oil, meat, milk and/or cream. :( Just doing reviews on my channel has helped me to become more aware, yet there is so much more that I don't understand - and so many "alternate fact" sources out there that don't admit to lying. Top off all of that with the use of pesticides, and the issues of deforestation, erosion, water rights issues, and more, and it is not such a simple matter.
Thank you for going into such depth, very worthwhile, so much nonsense out there, just from the trained people we’re supposed to trust. And yes, we are all different, and with what we are now discovering about the gut micro biome, the intricacies are being revealed. I’m eating more plants and feeling better for it. And yes, we must help the planet to heal by our choices and how we treat the soil. Thank you so much 🙏🌱
New to the keto/carnivore diet and I've been vegetarian for 5 years. But I'll tell you, my life has changed drastically for the better. In only 1 month my eczema is gone, all my aches, pains and anxiety gone. I can actually focus on my work. I wake up with a clear mind. I have energy all throughout the day. No sugar or energy crashes. I eat twice a day, sometimes once. My digestion problems are also gone. I used to poo like a rabbit. I never felt like my bowels were never fully relieved. That all changed when I stopped eating carbohydrates and fiber. I feel light as a feather all day long. I am truly a believer in a diet consisting of healthy fats and protein. I.e - meat, eggs, butter, lard, bacon, coconut oil.
Honestly I see these same type of comments over and over on RUclips. Listing all your ailments and how carnivore has miraculously cured you. It's like you're trying to entice people into your carnivore cult.
Your channel is the best thing on the entire internet and I’m not even exaggerating! Thank you so much for all your hard work and for putting your incredible brain to work for the side of truth!!!

Thank you. I'm a little bit shaken up after chasing all those references because I really didn't want to believe a well-educated journalist would represent his sources that way. My bias is journalists for the most part get a bad rap in America and I didn't want to further erode trust in them, so I took no pleasure in doing this episode.

Hey! I’m 58 and a big Keto/Carnivore diet and intermittent fasting fan for about 5 years now. It has dramatically improved my health (my high BP and arthritis in the knees) and I’m about 20 pounds lighter (back to my High School weight). HOWEVER I have taken your videos to heart and have started reducing the amount of saturated fat and protein and significantly boosting the amount of vegetables and low sugar fruits I eat. I’m also trying to replace beef and sausage with (primarily) salmon and sardines. The only thing I’m not on board with yet is the whole grains thing. I really feel like crapola when I eat them and have ever since I was a teenager. In fact, eliminating whole grains as a teenager and clearing up my skin is what first got me interested in nutrition. So you’ve got your work cut out for you if you want to convince me to eat those. Also any type of legumes, for reasons which I won’t mention. I like your channel a lot! You are informative and funny and I will continue watching!
Lots of story telling here and not much hard facts. I appreciate the look into history but I don’t see any good evidence that u presented that eating high saturated fat animal diet is bad. The correlation study of countries graphed by fat intake and heart attacks is not sufficient evidence. The type of fat is important. Processed oils like canola oil and safflower oil are inflammatory and increase heart attack risk while olive oil and avocado oil are very healthy. Lastly, soy and corn production is worse for the environment than meat production. Mono crop agriculture destroys the soil and the ecosystem, it’s not a simple equation to just carbon produced. How can u claim that 100 % grass fed cows isn’t sustainable, it’s literally turning sunlight and grass into energy for a cow?

Hi Chris. I know this came out last year but I just saw it. Thx! I’ve struggled since my 30’s with weight. I’m 60 now. I’ve been doing keto for 2 years and carnivore for the past 2 months. From what I understand, plant toxins, like oxalate salicylic acid and lectins, are intolerable for some people….like me, and can lead to multiple undiagnosable pain and fatigue with ibs brain fog and migraines.
Same experience for me. I've lost 137 lbs, just by limiting carbohydrates.
Vegetable oils aren't really unhealthy.
@@Teneab "Vegetable oils aren't really unhealthy."
It depends on how they're made and with what.
I'm not gonna deny that if you are trying to cut down on calories vegetable oils are terrible for you. But other than that they are generally fine. @@Teneab "Which health effects"
I am referring to general inflammation and the numerous things that inflammation can cause (heart disease, cancer, dementia,etc.). And I am really only talking about "industrial seed oils" (such as canola (rapeseed), corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, rice bran, soybean, safflower sunflower) which have much higher quantities of linoleic acid than whole foods or vegetable oil that is not derived from the seeds.
All the best,
Chris
@@Viva-Longevity Thanks Chris. I appreciate that. And nice quote! I admittedly thought it was Mencken, but Sinclair makes it that much more interesting.
Same. It’s easy to maintain my weight (5’4, 125 pounds) eating a plant based diet.

Any updates? Did it went wrong?
I was definitely on a low fat diet before."
Thanks your reply.
What's your LDL?
Well, you're almost there but you're still eating carbs... as long as you're eating root vegetables and 20 g according to keto
Insulin RESISTANCE is real and damaging. Insulin SENSITIVITY is what we are aiming for 😊
Losing weight is just the frosting on the cake.

What I got from Gary’s book is he’s all about the money to be made, and he seems to admit it.
Showing once again that getting health advice from leading scientists > from journalists.
How old are you? Just curious.

Debunk whatever you want buddy, all I know is I lost over 100lbs (53kg to be exact) in 6 months of Keto and Intermittent fasting. It saved my life.
I'm not a fan of Taubes or anyone who uses sarcasm and derision to discuss science but Keto works for me for weight loss, lower blood sugar, better cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure.
I really appreciate your videos for all of the in depth information founded upon science, and for the brutal honesty.

Absolutely changed my life, im 42 yrs type 1 diabetic with always having trouble keeping my blood glucose balance while doing carbs, had high blood pressure for 10 yrs (with 4 diff meds) and some small heart issues and depression. Cholesterol isn't the end all be all marker for heart health. It's ratios between different cholesterols and other markers. Ask to be refered to a cardiologist or go to one separately. High LDL lowers all cause mortality, especially if older.

Too many calories is DIRECTLY responsible for obesity. You’re out of your mind.

Thank you, Dan. Congratulations on your success over the last 7 years. 👏💪

Congratulations, Hen. Losing 75 pounds is an awesome accomplishment and getting your A1c that low. 👏💪😎
"great work"? lol, how is a book of lies great?
Very nice comment. I'm in the same league as you. I find myself very allergic to carbs, especially bread and sugar content. Keto brings me peace mentally, I eat almost once a day and I'm full of energy, and honestly, I really don't care if I'm gonna die before even the '80s.

Inflammation is behind a lot of our problems. Foods that raise blood sugar quickly (high glycemic index) are inflammatory, so it makes sense that people have a lot of success on Keto and it makes them feel better.
From the Taubes' blood work link
"His LDL. It's 116!!!! I don't care what your LDL particle size is ect. This is going to cause heart disease!!" and "His HDL is 68 and his triglycerides are 64. His CRP actually looks decent as well. "
Sorry, not sorry but particle size does matter and in fact, is critical.

Veggies are great, but I’ve seen more gut healing with bone broth than salad. The nice thing about choices is we can do both. 🐾
evolutionary we probably did do both depending on the season, farming is only something like 8000 years old after all so we didn't exactly have massive amounts of stored foods to go around before that

If your doctor is happy that your fasting, insulin is 17, maybe you should change your doctor
I think you may need a new doctor. Fat is terrible for diabetics
Who else is here after the PBN
keto worked really well for me and my wife

Trying to debunk keto simply because it is not vegan is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There are lots of people who eat vegan Keto.

Yeah, now just google "keto mortality" 😐
Another great video Baldy! Need more cuts to you running across random locations making noises in future videos 🤣😂
Noted! Thanks! I felt a little crazy doing it because you might've noticed there were horses there and some people. They ignored me as if I was just another insane person, which I guess I am.
That was one of the points I laughed at, too. Lol!!
High LDL lowers risk of all cause mortality in the elderly.
It doesn't help that ultra-processed foods are often deliberately designed to be addictive, and that the foods that we crave but don't want to eat require eating processed foods (e.g. fake meat products) to satisfy
Choosing good food is ONLY easy if you stick to basic foods, and sometimes not even then.
Thank you so much, an excellent video!
