Welcome to the bird side! 😂 Merlin is the BEST! Any time I hear a bird I’m not familiar with I pull up the app and it listens to the birds. It then tells you what calls it hears. I’ve found so many new birds this way, and I’ve been birding for over 20 years! Also, those could be moose or deer rubs on the trees. When they’re shedding the velvet from their antlers they use trees and branches to help scrape it off. And one more thing…when we were in Ketchikan a couple of months ago we rented with Turo from the nicest lady! It was the absolute best way to get out of the crowds in town. It was one of our favorite experiences of our cruise! We would never had known about Turo had it not been for y’all, so thank you! ❤
Frankly I don’t care about HAL or Alaska BUT I have watched every single video in this series. I anxiously await my morning video just because I love your personalities and your detailed showing of cruises!
Come back to Anchorage and do a land tour. You will see a moose! We did! We did Alaska Adventures Unlimited (hubby can’t cruise) and saw quite a few moose! I need to cruise to see an Orca! Never got to see one nor did I see a wolf. Just a reason to go back. Saw Brown bears, moose, fox, puffins, beluga, humpbacks, sea otters but no wolf. I recommend a bear excursion! It was amazing!
Spruce tip lager at Skagway brewing is also tasty. If you don’t like beer, they have other drinks (lemonade?) with spruce tip too. Good for preventing scurvy lol.
I did Portage glacier on the second cruise of the season this year, we got to break through the ice on the lake, and get “ice candles” from the lake, simply an experience I didn’t expect… 👏
Our cruisetour ended in Anchorage on June 27th. We took the 7:30 pm trolley tour and lucky for us, there was a moose just hanging out on the side of a residential street chowing down on some tall grass/weeds under a power line. The trolley driver turned around so we could see it up close and personal. We had already seen a mama and her calf in Denali, but this was much closer.
Absolutely Beautiful! Thank you so much for the update on Scott Singer, we have wondered what he was doing these days. Huge fans! This vlog and Kodiak are our favs!! Thanks for sharing this adventure, we are loving it! 😊
Glad to see u want to be a fellow birder 🤗 I’ve been one my whole life i absolutely love birds and find them beautiful, fascinating, comical, and amazing. I love the book and movie The Big Year and actually log a big year list myself. I found out last year I could enter my big year number for free in my state and I got a certificate and pin :) I also write a blog occasionally to help educate people about just basic birding and information about birds that I see even in my back yard and/or very local. I’m hoping to enter again at the end of this year but how hot it’s been there hasn’t been as much migration or opportunity to go out :/ but good luck on your new venture ❤
I’ve seen that same Moose(‘s) a few times. Lunch was a smart move to get a shorter wait & a less-crowded restaurant. Those kayakers really give perspective on how big that glacier is. Yes, calf is a moose baby.
I use the bird app Merlin a lot. It also identifies birds by sound, too. I find it extrememly relaxing to put the app on and sit in my back yard to see which birds are visiting.
I cruised out of Anchorage last August. Went a day early to do some sightseeing. Went for a hike down in earthquake park. It was beautiful and kind of freaky to be down below knowing that not too long ago where I was hiking was actually 30 ft (?) higher than I was at that moment. I didn't spot any wildlife but I did encounter a lot of mud. I was being adventurous and hiked on those dirt trails rather than the paved one. I had to throw in a small load of wash when I got back to the hotel.
If they are anything like the Moose here in Ireland you would see them more in the Fall or Autumn and a good bit in the winter. They are probably on holiday in the Summer, lol. Great video vlog. Thank you both for your time.
The key with moose (and yes baby moose are called calf’s) is they are more prevalent during dawn and dusk. You will see some by day, but it’s much rarer. They are also very sensitive to sound and smell, if they hear you or you are particularly fragrant, they will be long gone before you ever see them.
Re the trees, one thing it could be is areas where Moose and/or other antlered animals (deer, reindeer, caribou) rub the velvet off antlers in the spring. As I am sure you are aware, antlers get dropped by the animals yearly and regrow in the spring. When they do, they are covered with a fuzz (velvet) which they rub off against trees.
I’m so glad Anchorage was an overnight port for you guys. I am getting excited for my 3 days in Anchorage before my Southbound Cruise in September. Some of what you showed was on my list to do.
Walking on the beach at Port Woronzof seeing the painted rocks and awesome views of downtown Anchorage. We saw a moose in the woods at the end of the runway. There was a short trail to Blair Glacier in Portage. Best view we got of Denali was on top of Flatop Mountain. A good variety of trails from easy to strenuous. Potter Marsh was a good bird watching area on the left leaving Anchorage.
If you two ever have the time take the drive from Anchorage to Seward it is beautiful or try the Alaska Railroad which can be a day trip it's worth the time.
We ridden the roads from Seward to Girdwood, and now from Anchorage to Portage, so we’ve done that whole stretch, just not at once, hah. Beautiful drive for sure!! :D
We are docking in Whittier when we hit Alaska next year. There doesn’t appear to be anything do to there, so I think we may take a shuttle to Anchorage for the day.
So Moose's Tooth would be equivalent to The Bee's Knee? That did look like some tasty pizza!! Yum yum yum!! Too bad you didn't see any moose(s) on this outing, maybe in Homer? Looking forward to further Alaska adventures!
15:36 That teensy, tiny person in the lower left corner shows just how HUGE the glacier is. I don't know why it always shocks me when I see something that just brings home how big they are, but it does. It's hard to get a sense of size when you have nothing to compare it to. The ant sized human being definitely shocked me.
Well Moose's Tooth is by far NOT the best pizza in Alaska. The best is Mountain High Pizza Pie in Talkeetna Alaska. In my numerous visits to Alaska and I will say NEVER by cruise ship. Mountain High Pizza Pie is the BEST!
I will give that pizza place in Talkeetna a try. To see Alaska from a cruise ship is such a different perspective, regardless if you are a fan of cruising, so no need to bash it.
@@julietaylor2497 No I have not but I will be flying to Anchorage Feb 2025 and driving to Fairbanks for a week of Northern Lights photography. I will stop and try it out. Thanks!

That nest on the top of the minivan was hilarious!
Scott singer is a name I haven’t heard for awhile, I loved watching his videos and missed him when he stopped.
Nice video! Thanks for the update on Scott Singer. I do miss his videos, but glad he is doing well.
Omgosh we loved watching Scott's vlog 😍 ❤️
Delighted to hear you kept in touch with him. 👍😎

You should change your username to “Negative Nancy”.
WOW!!! Having a person on the beach REALLY helps see the scale! Wow!❤

There is a dead end road on the runway side of the airport where we spotted moose every time we visited. Potter Marsh was great for bird watching too!
Spruce tip lager at Skagway brewing is also tasty. If you don’t like beer, they have other drinks (lemonade?) with spruce tip too. Good for preventing scurvy lol.
Yesssss, we made sure to try the spruce tip when we were in Skagway last year!! :D
Those toilets look so much cleaner than some public toilets in Sydney!!
I did Portage glacier on the second cruise of the season this year, we got to break through the ice on the lake, and get “ice candles” from the lake, simply an experience I didn’t expect… 👏
I love your videos and I especially like this itinerary. I miss Scott Singer’s videos, I wish you got to see him.

That is so cool to see on the menu they have. Nashville nachos this is where I live
Moose’s tooth is the best
Yes those are Birch Trees, no I have never played Minecraft lol. White bark is birch, we have them in Michigan.
I was lucky enough to see a moose a couple weeks ago in Seward pre cruise. Eating at the tree line on the side of the main road.
I cruised out of Anchorage last August. Went a day early to do some sightseeing. Went for a hike down in earthquake park. We took the train from Anchorage to Talkeetna and saw a dozen moose on the trip.
I got a mudwich at that wild treats place! Best ice cream sandwich I ever had.
Thank you for the great video!
that sure has receded a lot since i took my bus passengers there in 2006. Ptarmigan is a good ship with a well seasoned crew :) very informative.
OMG! That pizza looks delish! Enjoy
Dee I love the Merlin app. I use the identify-by-sound feature a lot. One day in spring it identified 9 different songbirds.
Very interesting, in 88 we were there and they expected ice to over take the visitor center, so much for forecast

That is my friend Alyssa ice cream shop. I was the taste tester when she lived in my friends basement.
Beautiful.

Love watching your journey
We saw moose in the Redwood Forest.-Rita
YAY Merlin app... I work at Cornell University :)
So Moose's Tooth would be equivalent to The Bee's Knee? That did look like some tasty pizza!! Yum yum yum!! Too bad you didn't see any moose(s) on this outing, maybe in Homer? Looking forward to further Alaska adventures!
try the salmon burger .. delicious ... well maybe next time :)
Jay what is your Minecraft handle? My hubby plays regularly.
I lost my long-time handle in the Microsoft migration a little while back! I signed up for a new one but don’t remember what it is, ha ha. :P ~Jay
I'm never sure if I'm looking at a birch or an aspen.

Prospector's Pizza at Glitter Gulch in Denali has really good pizza too. Have you tried it?

Not good to see the glacier’s calving, nothing exciting about it, global warming not good!
