A nearby town has a number of large redwood trees that were planted as civic road trees on the street easement. They had been planted a hundred years before but still belonged to the town. A church that was on the lot that some of the trees fronted decided it wanted them OUT, and the church had them removed claiming the trees were diseased and constituted a hazard. They weren't; redwood trees are famously healthy as horses and are very insect and rot resistant. And redwood trees that are a hundred years old are young whippersnappers among redwoods. Redwoods can live to be thousands of years old. The city fined them $80,000 a tree. This town is VERY serious about its trees. It's part of the town's culture.

me too! you can say what you want about Alabama but that would not happen where i live. I am a disabled person , and i sometimes get a little bothered byt the number of people offering to help me. if that had happened here im not saying one person wouldn't have stolen from the guy but there's have been 10 people chasing that one down while several others helped the guy up and helped him get to his vehicle. im sure most people would do that in most places, idk where he was but he needs to move!
Legitimately, we were talking to a cashier about our car accident when we bought our house [over two years ago now] and she was like "You gotta be careful, people will pretend to come help and then rob you blind while you're likely hurting emotionally or physically from the wreck! If you can move and your phone is okay, start filming as soon as you can" and it made my mother and I pause and just stare silently because what do you say to that?!
In 6th grade my teacher said "Schools should teach you how to say no." at the time I made a joke saying "No." but now it seems much more serious. My 6th grade teacher was a g. She taught us how to write essays and do projects. If a teacher is making you do tons of hard work which you don't need to do now remember that in the future you'll need it.
Exactly. Writing is integral to learning the communication skills that are required to really excel in life. Papers might not be fun (though I actually always enjoyed them far more than tests) but the skills that you learn have a consistent impact throughout your entire life, since there's literally no point in our entire lives where we don't rely on our ability to communicate our thoughts to others.
To be fair, they also said Cursive would be one of the most important things I'd ever learn. About to turn 26 and still haven't used it even once, not even in school since they tried to teach it.
@@russeshe001 Did they really say that? I had to learn cursive in school too, but nobody ever told me "it would be one of the most important things I'd ever learn". That's just silly. I don't think they even teach it in elementary school anymore.
@@SRosenberg203 They did. They seemed to be under the impression that if I didn't write in cursive, nobody would ever take my hand-written (Ha.) resumes and essays seriously; some teachers are more interested in pushing their ideals than teaching useful skills. Especially when 'tradition' comes into the equation, people seem to lose all sense of reality.
In 9th grade, my English teacher was amazing. She was exasperated with me at first, because - in her words - I was CLEARLY in the wrong class. I should have been in the more "advanced" class, while she taught those who struggled. It was due to scheduling issues, and although I tried to get it changed - she was stuck with me. Bless her, she usually just let me do my own thing. The best thing she taught, and I think it was in October or November... however - and she dedicated two full weeks to it - was a variety of "work skills", as she called it. She told us, EVERY DAY, that if we mastered these skills, our work lives would be much better. She taught telephone skills (how to properly answer the phone, take messages, answer questions, handle irritable callers, etc), interviewing skills, polite ways to deal with a boss while wanting to "rip them a new one" and much, much more. When I entered the work force, I was amazed at how well these little lessons worked. More than once I was complimented on things like "interviewing well", but especially my "excellent" phone etiquette. All thanks to that teacher, who actually brought in a telephone (not connected to a phone line, pre-cell phone!) and had us practice EVERYTHING. At the time, I thought it pretty stupid - after all, I had been raised with decent phone etiquette. Then, I watched my classmates STRUGGLE, and it hit me... these were the students who would likely be trapped in some crappy job or switch jobs often... my teacher was doing her best to give them a foot up. She recognized the fact they would struggle, and I really hope they took her lessons to heart and aced interviews, too. I do know that I started helping the teacher out with the ones struggling the most in class the rest of the school year, trying to put the ideas, etc, into a form they could easily grasp. She gave me a hug after the year was over (she asked first, cus of the "don't touch students" rule, and I agreed), thanking me for my help, and that some of those I had helped ended up with much better grades than she had dared hope for. I wish I could remember her name. Every so often, I am reminded of her by comments like these, where people wish such skills were taught in school. It may not have been a dedicated class to it, but I know that one teacher made a difference in that way.
I love all of my English/Writing teachers (even the ones I didn't actually take English classes from), but yours might even have them beat. Wow, do I really mean that? I mean, I'm talking about a woman who showed me that using Nintendo themed classroom items, examples, and even assignments are cool and acceptable; a man who showed me that sonnets are fun to write and (unintentionally?) built up my confidence in my acting skills; a woman who advocated for me and actually knew how to treat Aspie kids, taught me what unconscious bias was and why it was important, and taught my family that some standardized tests CAN be opted out of with NO consequence; the woman I saw as an older sister figure; and the Chaotic Good government teacher who is just a total bro of a lady, and whose son I will probably marry. I went to a pretty awesome Title 1/College prep school, so this actually seems like something many of them would teach. In fact, the more I type this, the more I wonder if the Internship teacher, or the Government/Humanities/English teacher who will one day be my MIL, taught some of the exact same skills and I just don't remember it right now.
In the last story. Even if I had no gun I would tell her "Could you wait there a moment? I'm gonna go get my gun. It's real handy when you have intruders."
invader : "hippiti, hopiti, this is now my property !" owner : "Let me introduce you to the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America"
There’s a podcaster I listen to who basically did that when he lived outside Miami. Some people were in his backyard (with a fence) so he racked the BB gun they had, which sounded like a shotgun so they took off.

Honestly, OP *was* the stupid one. This woman was literally harassing him, trespassing on his property, and had people DESTROY PART OF HIS LAND. All of this is happening WHILE his SIL is mooching off of him. It feels like that dude is a push over and doesn’t have any balls to say no to anybody, so he runs from his problems because he decides, “Yeah, the best way to solve this problem is to move.” Honestly, OP seems like a spineless coward who is too scared to deal with problems.

Depending on where they were in Texas I’m not completely certain the cops would have been able to get there in time. Texas was NOT prepared for this past blizzard.
True, but I'm kinda glad they didn't. Cops' lives would have been endangered from driving on ice as well as the actual situation. Guy was smart to just trick Big Birtha.
Why do people straight up lie to police about people doing something they didn't? To look like a good citizen to cops? lol wtf you can get arrested for lying about this stuff im pretty sure.
No, it's pure sadism, these people get pleasure by watching, hearing or even just knowing that other people are being hurt, damaged, raped, fined, etc... And they're the most satisfied, if they're the reason that other people get hurt, damaged, raped, fined, etc... There are many sadists living "normal" lives, satisfying themselves with petty actions like these, until they're bored with them and become more agressive. And most people are to afraid to stop people like these, most people hope for empathy or common sense, but these sadists don't care about either of those, they just want to hurt someone!

I'm sure the reason the school system doesn't teach students to talk back to future bosses is because if they did the students might talk back to the teachers and ruin the class.
For the first story of the Karen think he was drunk, I have the perfect reverse card, I’m actually more steady on my feet when I’ve had a couple drinks (currently we think it’s because knowing I’ve had a drink makes me more cautious/aware of what my body is doing even though I have a high tolerance)
OP was thinking about moving anyway & rightly said why fight super hard with a crazy to win something I dont value that much. More stepping to the side than rolling over.
These are the edits OP posted for the story bout the driveway EDIT The general consensus seems to be that I should speak to a lawyer and the police. I'm taking the day off to speak to a lawyer tomorrow. Also, a lot of comments about what is going to happen when I sell the house. I'm going to speak to my wife about it when I get home tonight, but I don't think i'm gonna sell the house. Hopefully I can put this house up for rent. EDIT 2 I met with a lawyer this morning. She spoke a lot, but it doesn't seem like she can do much. I did call the police though. When I got home earlier today the glass on my front door was cracked and one of my basement windows was shattered. I checked my cameras and my neighbor was knocking on my door for a few minutes before kicking my front door repeatedly. After she cracked the glass she walked around to the back of my house and kicked in my basement window before running away. I called the police and they were here in less than 5 minutes. I gave them the footage and they went to knock on her door. I was told that I would be able to get a restraining order. I'll post an update when I find out what is going to happen to her. We're still going to move, but we are most likely going to sell the house. My wife just wants to forget this place exists and I don't disagree. Someone tagged my posts as fake - not sure why. I made my first post because I wasn't taking my neighbor seriously and I was kinda of amused by the situation. I posted this one because a lot of you guys have been asking me for an update. I don't really want to post a picture of my driveway or house on a public site like this, so I guess believe what you want?
I’m studying marketing at the moment and in my college they actually do teach us about interviews (how to get and interview, what to talk about, how to dress and stuff like that). They also teach us how to know if we’re being mistreated by our boss or other staff and how to deal with it. Very thankfull to my college for that.
I actually did take an elective in highschool called Real World Banking that taught us the ins and outs of banking for new people. It was very useful turns out
Years ago I had a similar experience when I lost the strength in my legs suddenly and fell at a grocery store. As EMTs attended to me and prepared to move me into the ambulance, two Karens stepped OVER ME. One stopped right at my feet, looked down at me, and SPAT on my hand, hissing at me for "being drunk before 3 p.m. Then as they moved on, one kicked my cane away just as an EMT reached for it. Yeah - I have no trouble believing a Karen's go-to response at seeing a cane-bearing older man fall was to report him to police for public drunkenness.
The last person that tried to force their way in got whacked in the leg with a steel bar and then got arrested by the cops they called on me. Yes, I'm a Texan and yes, I do have shotguns, but being taken out by a guy in a wheelchair with a whack to the leg and getting arrested for it then having to explain that to your cellmates is priceless. Being crippled doesn't mean we're helpless.
I...buh...EXCUSE ME?! The mother was absolutely in the right for yelling at the grandfather for saying that to a seventeen year old. Now, I understand that they wanted to get the uncle settled and what not ((as an adult Aspie, my older brother and my sister in law have stepped up to take me on when my mom dies)), but you do NOT curse out someone like that just because you're frustrated and OP's mom was listening in. I just can't with that story.
So working in a small shop selling VW parts we had all sorts of weird people and crazy conversations. Had a guy get dropped off in the parking lot and he comes inside the shop. Our showroom is the size of a large houses living room, not huge by any standard. Guy comes in and is drunk AF, it’s about 9:30-10:00 in the morning BTW. Asks about parts in a somewhat intelligible manner but is barely able to stand. So he goes and sits on a shelf full of parts damaging some of them. My co worker tells him he needs to leave the store and he does. He sits out front and just passes out. Co worker calls the sheriff and the guy is picked up and taken away. HOURS later the car that dropped him off returns and asks about him. Co worker tells the tale and the guy leaves. Remember this is before the standard changed to its normal to see some homeless camped out just any old where or shooting up drugs. So yeah, guy was picked up for drunk in public, only the second time I had seen it. Other was a fellow Marine who was trashed out in town. Cops picked him up and deposited him at Pendleton’s Oceanside entrance. He had to face a few things after that.
While that kid's grandfather had 0 right to talk to him that way or asking of that, I'm going to use the fact that the kid is 17 that he doesn't think depression can be really bad enough to be debilitating. Still that grandfather has no right to ask that of a child
One thing I’m actually really greatful for with my college is that they actually do teach us valuable interview skills. We have a department called “Career and Professional Readiness Development” where they give us the options to set up mock interviews so we can get evaluations on how to make ourselves look good to employers. I feel like all colleges should have this.
My college had two classes a semester that you had to take. After all is said and done, you have taken eight classes in college that teaches you how to interview, build a cover letter/resume, how to negotiate a salary or hourly wage, how to stand up to toxic bosses, how to properly call out, and different laws that show you that you can sue for unlawful termination, etc. It teaches you way more than that. But overall, it's amazing and I think every college and high school should teach them....
I’ve always been grateful my high school had a mandatory career prep course in grade 12. We were taught the basics, like how to write a resume and professional writing formats, but also our rights as workers, what minimum wage and pay rates were, and other things such as how to fill out worker’s compensation forms. All the things we needed to know in advance so we could get a job that treated us responsibly, and keep it, without being mistreated.
Really shows the differences in people with the Texas outage. Pretty much all the stores had no power too, but there's a dollar general down the street and i ran down there to see if they were open - they were only taking cash, only one person in the store at a time. I stood outside with a line of people swapping stories and talking about who had power or water, what stores were open etc. It was actually nice to talk to people going through the same thing and we were all just kinda chill about the whole thing. I mean really, if everyone's suffering through the same thing its so much easier and nicer to come together over it instead of being a nasty Karen. Smh.
Getting disability payments for depression??? Man, I didn’t know I could just give up being a responsible person and just get the government to pay me!
depression can be a genuine debilitating factor. I have depression and autism, and after college it's already been determined I'll be on welfare because I can't do much at all in energy terms. it's a little insulting to imply that depression is always never a reason to need disability payouts.
IM LEGIT BEING TAUGHT ALL ABOUT ALL OF THE JOB STUFF YOU MENTIONED, IN MIDDLESCHOOL, ABOUT BABYSITTING! It’s genuinely STUPID how they teach people that are just barely old enough to fully understand hourly pay AND NOT ADULTS IN COLLEDGE. I. AM. OUTRAGED
Wtf. I live in Texas. We were all so nice to each other trying to help each other best we could during the week long ice age. Since I recently moved from Minnesota I was helping others collect snow to use once the pipes were frozen! I can’t imagine someone being so rude like this lady!
I know you were probably joking but as someone who lived through that, Texas is not built for the negative freezing temperature it got to. Please understand it was no 60° temperatures we got close to 0° in many places. That's like me saying how extremely hot burning temperatures somewhere else are merely cool temps to us.
@@kogalitterio2502 even if texas isnt built for cold weather you won't freeze to death even in 0° as long as ur not in direct exposure. As someone who grew up with negative 40° below and had to walk a mile to school in that weather, trust me when I say 0° is only life threatening if you lack common sense
@@CrazyCole22 I never said it was life threatening that Karen was a bit ridiculous about that, but I was just saying to have some respect. If you havent lived in Texas your whole life and lived through its weather conditions for multiple years you wouldnt understand why that hit us hard. You are use to the -40° weather, we are not. Just like I imagine someone who hasent lived in 110° weather would not appreciate me talking about how that sounds ridiculous that they cant handle some heat. I have walked to school, walked to work, and actively worked in pants in such high temps. It's a weather shock and some people just are not use to that.
@@kogalitterio2502 no human being will ever be used to - 40° . Considering you're from texas I dont think you understand exactly how cold that is. Its cold enough that if you took a piss outside it would freeze before it hit the ground. Human beings are not built for that weather at all. While I understand that Texas isnt built for "cold weather" , having the outages last for as long they did makes no sense.
@@kogalitterio2502 also, we had the same circumstances but our power was out because of too much heat. Our state is far larger then yours and we still fixed our outages faster which make no sense to me at all.
I'm surprised at the crazy lady ion the last story. I live in Texas and went through the outages as well, and at least in my area in brought out the best in people. Neighbors we barely spoke to would stop by to make sure we were ok or see if we needed anything because we knew my grandmother lives here. Our neighbor across the street had a generator and would constantly bring us hot water and hot meals and when the house got down to about 30 degrees they actually went out in the ice and snow, and spent their own money and bought us a generator of our own so we could have heat. (They offered to help grandma to their house but she was afraid she would fall and refused to go). It was a crazy few days but everyone around us was kind and generous and when we did have to go to the store, half their power was out so the whole store was having fun playing flashlight tag in the aisles. it gave everyone an excuse to be silly and have fun and just be good to one another. Leave it to a few karens to try to ruin it for everyone.
The autistic uncle story scares me, because I have the same condition and I've always been scared of having exactly the same circumstances. But at the very least, I'm actually looking for jobs.
Being autistic does make it a bit tougher but it doesn't mean we can't take care of ourselves. It is saddening that people actually think that Asperger's is an excuse not to take care of oneself. I'm autistic and have chronic depression. it's already been determined I'll be on disability payouts after college while working about 15 hours a week max. it's great all of you are able to function so well, I'm truely glad. but its not smooth sailing for all of us.
@@nerida3347 It is not smooth sailing by any means, but we've been able to navigate the choppy waters for sure. Not certain where you are on the spectrum, but the chronic depression doesn't exactly help. I'm happy to hear you're making it through college and finding work while getting some support.
Lmao, for the Texas story, OP's first response should have been to yell "Honey, get the gun!" I'm allowed to make the stereotype, I'm from Texas. For real though, I heard a lot of sweet stories about the power outage where people let absolute strangers stay in their home to fight the cold together, so this is an interesting flip side.
LOL!! I made that tree law comment on the first version when r/Slash originally read this post and did actually do a bit of research on it out of curiosity. Well....., if the particular plants that make up the hedgerow are classified as trees, tree law DOES apply. But the fines for intentionally removing crafted landscaping is surprisingly costly as well!! There are a few complexities regarding growth age and sizes, but one can find themselves in some VERY deep doodoo from cutting down another’s hedges. Even if you are the one directing others to do it, you would automatically fall into liability in the claim. The one example I read that blew my mind was about a rich ex wife cutting down a collection of old bonsai trees the husband had been doting over for decades. Evidently the wife thought that she was going to grab this particular house (one of three at issue in the divorce) that was seemingly one of the husbands holdings but was actually fully owned by his brother. He transferred full ownership about a year before he knew a divorce was imminent was in the claim. The end result was that the wife ended up being held responsible for paying almost the full value of the house itself to the brother as compensation for cutting down the trees!!! 😵 The house was purchased pretty much for the collection of bonsai trees and was a huge factor in its value. Do you have any clue as to how expensive just one 30 year old bonsai tree is worth if you cut it down??? Then multiply that by 8!!! $$😵$$ 😩😩🤣🤣
The little side story about the vet who had his groceries stolen while he was on the ground and couldn't get up, is without a doubt one of the top three SADDEST things I have *ever* heard. I've had that conversation many times with my moms regarding my brothers future. I remember worrying about who could take care of my brother if something were to happen to her as early as 8 years old. I acknowledge that that conversation was not one that she should have been having with an eight-year-old but me and my mom have a weird dynamic where I've always been her emotional punching bag and the idea that I would take care of my brother has always been so ingrained in me so much so that before I married my husband I even told him I'll be taking care of my brother we're a packaged deal. when my mom was going through chemo I stepped up and took care of a lot of my brother's caregiving needs. We've known my brother was autistic since he was three when I was a one-year-old but I didn't learn I was autistic until I was in my twenties and I really wouldn't trust his care with anyone else because no one else understands him like I do I can advocate for his needs in a unique way. The idea of him being stuck in a care facility or Developmental Center is crushing because he was stuck in one for a while after my mother was in a car accident and CPS took them away it took years to get them out there was abuse it was horrifying. My brother is nonverbal but he has a job and a girlfriend and goes to school he has a happy life. Maybe the seventeen-year-olds uncle needs someone who can push for him to go to therapy and get his life together but I also agree it shouldn't be put on the seventeen-year-old shoulders especially behind the parents back maybe It should have been something he was asked if he was interested in doing because he's close to his uncle and his uncle should have been involved in that conversation as well. I Remember for a long time I resented the fact that it was just expected of me to take care of my brother and then as I've gotten older I realized nobody else can step up the way I can it was a choice I made myself in the end.
I homeschool my daughter using the school district materials, and she's currently taking Careers. They paint this sunny picture of work as though everyone is so eager to see you succeed and there's nothing in the book about sexual harassment, conflict with coworkers or employers, anything like that. The most we found is a couple of lines saying that if you think things aren't quite as they should be, you talk to your supervisor. Then it said if the company won't resolve it you file a complaint with the government group that is over whatever business you're in. That's it. No talk about discussing it with higher-ups or HR, not details on how you go about lodging a complaint. Most of the content is about how to consider job options and network. And the book is 20 years old.

I love this approach! Regardless of topic, written communication is vital in a modern work place. Good on your teacher!
The feel good story i needed

The general consensus seems to be that I should speak to a lawyer and the police. I'm taking the day off to speak to a lawyer tomorrow. Also, a lot of comments about what is going to happen when I sell the house. I'm going to speak to my wife about it when I get home tonight, but I don't think i'm gonna sell the house. Hopefully I can put this house up for rent.
EDIT 2
I met with a lawyer this morning.
Me: Well not with those fingers intact at this point.
The reason they don't teach those kinds of things in school: they mostly can't. After all, they won't even let kids stand up to bullies.

My college had two classes a semester that you had to take.
Autism isn’t an excuse for crappy behavior. Autistic people are just neurodivergent, not suffering from a disease or condition.
Being autistic does make it a bit tougher but it doesn't mean we can't take care of ourselves. It is saddening that people actually think that Asperger's is an excuse not to take care of oneself. Hope you find a job and don't let these kind of stories hold you back, I'm autistic, in my 30's, have a kid, and have never struggled for work.
@@joshbettle9262 I agree..
I have asperger's, (25f) and I have a job and am close to getting my first apartment.. I've had struggles, but I refuse to use my disability as an excuse for laziness.. Granted, we don't know where exactly the uncle falls on the spectrum, but in most cases asperger's is on the higher functioning scale..
Lmao, for the Texas story, OP's first response should have been to yell "Honey, get the gun!"
I'm allowed to make the stereotype, I'm from Texas.
Oh my God I have never actually hoped that the poster was lying for attention before now. I'm not saying that they are lying and making stuff up, but omg I hope they are.
I'm one of those that normally just listen to this channel, but when I heard that I went and grabbed my phone so I could double check i heard correctly. Unfortunately, I did. I was already convinced that the world is full of horrible people (except for a select few decent people. Now I'm just depressed at the state of the world. That story really messed with me. It's just so ungodly horrific that there are a group of people that would do that to anyone, let a lone a veteran, let ALONE a vet that came home with injuries. What a shitty way to thank him for his service.
The crazy pool Karen, I'd have her charged with intent to encroach on private property AND sue her for the hedge removal.
For crazy neighbor update, don't move away, fight back. Sue her for trespass, property damage, harassment. And for his sister's in law put a restriction order on them to deny any kind of contact around his house.
The true power of a Karen is the ability to be the least helpful person in any situation.
I can't believe that guy is Still having problems with the neighbor & the pool install. I truly would sue her for the damaged hedges ! I don't know what to think of people now days & they're getting crazyer by the minute lately !
