So you want to make your own film. How do you start? How do you write a story? Where can you find actors? Who do you need for a crew, or can you do it all yourself? What equipment should you use for camera, sound and lighting? How do you successfully plan and run a shoot? What are the best ways to create practical or visual effects? How do you edit your film to tell a great story? And most importantly, how do you do all this without spending much money?
If this sounds like you and you have no idea where to start, then you will love my free webinar where I reveal my Top 10 Tips for making your passion project on a budget!
It’s the list I wish had existed when I was first starting out and I knew absolutely nothing! But today I make film and TV content professionally, I‘ve had my short films screened all over the world, and I’ve been lucky enough to direct some amazing actors, including well-known TV and film star Guy Henry - who you’ll probably have seen in some things that are way more expensive than the things I make!
I’ve also had my work praised by Dennis Muren, creative director at ILM who has designed the effects for some of the biggest movies of all time.
So I’ve put this free list together as a filmmaker, for filmmakers, to get you up and running quickly from whatever level you are at. There’s tips on everything from scriptwriting a good idea, to pre-production and planning, running your actual shoot where I share tips from real recent short films that I have directed, and then all the way through to post production.
So click this link to save your spot on the free webinar, and I’ll see you inside. Happy moviemaking! www.diymoviemaking.com/pl/214...

I took your webinar yesterday, and it was super helpful! I've been making movies for as long as I can remember, starting with stop motion and eventually making my way to live action, which is what I do now. I've been watching you for a long time now and I must say, you're definitely one of the best filmmaking channels on the platform. Many thanks!

Hey Steve. I'm a student of your after effects course and I was one of the few who managed to get the discount at the product launch, and I can honestly say that it was on of the best 75$ I ever spent. I've learned a lot from you and I'm very grateful for that. The AE course was very helpful and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Unfortunately, things have taken a toll for the absolute worse in Sri Lanka. Over the past 6 months we've gone into recession and inflation has sky rocketed. In fact, when I bought your AE course a US dollar was 190LKR and now its at 365LKR! I will purchase your course one day when things get better here, but until then I shall look to your RUclips videos for guidance.

We made our first short film in 2005. We wanted to learn the process so we took a joke and scripted it as a story using a single location to keep it simple. Once that was done we scouted for locations. Once we found our location we mapped out how we would shoot the film at that location. From our notes from spending a few days doing that we developed a comprehensive shot list. Then we researched cameras and initially bought a standard def 3-chip camera that we ultimately returned since we felt it was too limiting feature wise. More research and we ended up with a Sony Z1U HDV camera that was excellent. We wanted a jaws style dolly zoom shot at the end of the film so we bought a low coswt dolly that used PVC pipe for track. We then bought a good microphone (Sennheiser shotgun mic) and a small digital audio recorder to shoot double system.
Since we were already avid photographers we took our best studio tripod and put a fluid head on it. Then we advertised for actors to audition for our "no-pay" movie. We rented a small theater on a Sunday morning for about $70 for 5 hours and had the actors come there to audition. We taped all of the auditions so we could review the performances later. The actors got lunch, credit and gas money. We bought a few other items like a slate and what not. We then recruited friends to help with the shoot. We had myself directing, my partner as DP. A friend as 2nds AC for slating. Another friend as scriptie. Another friend to boom and record sound - He was a musician so I trusted his ear.
Other than that we had 2 other folks along to help out with various things like holding a diffuser over the talent when the sun got too frisky. We spent a weekend rehearsing without the actors to train the crew so they would know what to do on the day of the shoot. On the day of the shoot everything was going great until one of the actors was a no-show and called and said they could not make it. So there we were on location with a full crew ready to shoot and no talent. The scriptie suggested that we use another friend who had come along to watch. A non-actor. She thought he was hot and would look good on camera and we had nothing to lose at that point.
So we rehearsed with him a few times. He memorized the script in record time and was a truly naturally gifted actor. Who knew? We finished the shoot and were elated with the results. I edited and finished the film using Adobe Premiere Pro2.0 after reading their Classroom in a Book from cover to cover. Excellent book too. Our final result was excellent. I have always been proud of that first effort. We took our time and meticulously planned the film. That was key. You can do it too.

    I need your advice!
I make some remarks from movies I change the real actors to myself (with a green screen) I used to record with my phone (iPhone x) but I wanna buy a camera and don’t have money more than 1000 dollars
I only have 1000 dollars to get a camera.
So what is the best camera (with lens) for recording green screen under 1000 dollars?
    Please help😁🙏🏼
