Saw Supertramp first in 74 in Detroit at Ford Auditorium who used to have weekday concerts for up and coming bands for $2.00 My cousin had heard the album Crisis? What Crisis? and talked us in to going. First band sucked, next band Reo Speedwagon was decent. Supertramp came on and played this whole album and blew our minds. We all walked out of there wondering how they have not made it yet. 2 months late they exploded. Saw Queen at the same venue. Lucky to have grown up to the best music ever made. Ended up seeing Supertramp 3x, after Breakfast in America they were just too pop . Success and record companies ruined them

Being a baby in those days, my first contact with Supertramp later was with three or four (or five)songs: dreamer, it's raining again, the logical song, goodbye stranger and give a little bit. These were the songs played on radio in mid 80's I think. A few years ago started to search for more and they amazing.

This is a *criminally* underrated song. (See what I did there?)
Seriously though, this might be my favorite Supertramp song. I *loathe* that it doesn't get any radio play these days; all you ever hear is "The Logical Song", "Good-bye Stranger", and "Breakfast in America." Those are great songs to be sure, but there's just something about this one that just... hits me. I think it's the combination of haunting atmosphere and biting lyrics. The amazing instrumentation doesn't hurt, either. ;)

I have had the extreme pleasure of seeing "The Tramp" LIVE 3 times. They are so sophisticated and smart. I only put Pick Floyd above them for my favorite concerts.

I saw Supertramp live once at the 1975 Reading Festival and was very impressed especially since I loved this album the band which followed was Yes and they played the most of the Gates of Delirium album which is an entirely higher plane of existence

I was working on Hayman Isd in the seventies as a barman. I received a small parcel one day from my mum, and in it was a letter and a cassette tape. The letter said, my mum was on her way to work one morning and Supertramp came on the car radio. She pulled over and listened to the song and wrote down the name of the group and the song. Long story short, she ordered the “Record” and taped it for me and sent it, that was “Crime of the Century” . I showed my room mate the letter as the tape played, he was also blown away.

this live video sums up both the strength and weakness of Supertramp. They were a great band, with absolutely solid albums including an end to end no filler classic (Crime) . Their problem live, at least to me, was that they reproduced those albums perfectly , to the point that their live performances seemed sterile. Its a weird thing for me to say, because how many times have we all seen bands that can't cut it live? Weakness is a bad choice of words. I know when I saw them I was blown away by how good they were, but also by the fact that there wasn't that 'buzz' of when you are at a live show and everything is cooking. They always seemed to keep a 'distance' live. You can't fault the effort they put in to make sure everyone heard the songs as they knew them on record. They just never seemed to have that missing spark of unpredictability that makes a live show memorable.

There is a difference between an introduction and a beginning to a song. In "School" - the first song of "Crime of the Century" - Rick's harmonica captures the audiences attention and holds it for the entire album. One doesn't need to begin the album until a third of the way through. In other words, one owns the audience captivating them for a third of the way through because it takes time for them to figure out that you suck. So, an orchestration of strings aren't added until the forth song. Back then, the b-sides to albums were considered trash. Not in the case with Supertramp. It concluded with four endings.
First, Rudy is the only song that tells a complete story with a dramatic ending. It then surprises with another sad epilogue ending returning to notify the audience that "Rudy has just come out the movie..." Roger follows up that with "Hide in Your Shell" which begs the audience not to quit on the trashy b-side. Finally, "Crime of the Century" ends with the mother of all endings.
(Side note) The deep throated chanting underlying Rick as he rages his warning in Crime of the Century is the same exact deep throated chanting that begins in the third stanza underlying the harmonica playing of the song "School."
The harmonica both ends off and introduces the album. It becomes a prison - a vicious cycle that can't be escaped from.

Not Hide in your Shell, but If Everyone Was Listening. Roger often says that this wasn't a concept album. To a degree, every album is a concept one though.

Like Genesis a group of fine musicians who knew how to construct a good tune. Layers of sound, melodies and counter-melodies on a great bass line. Creative and concise. Beautiful music.

Supertramp may be something of an acquired taste. I listened to Breakfast in America a lot when it came out and it kind of grew on me. Not a big fan of prog (I do like some) but Supertramp was kind of fun at a party.

    • @WilliamJones-sf5pt

Rick being somewhat older was more into the fifties music. Roger was more into the sixty jive. In the album Crisis What Crisis, the yellow sleeve and contempt for the end of the world gives off a positive happy fifty theme.

Very enjoyable reaction, this album is full of melody which is a trademark of Supertramp. They had many hit singles so will have certainly had a useful budget. Your album Breakfast in America is also full of great songs, the title track is one of the best.

Not just melody, but backed with masterful profound proficiency. Rick Davies started off as a drummer before moving over to the piano. He was so great as a drummer that the other percussionist in the band up and quit claiming that he was "too good."

  • @johnfoster5295

The main guy singing this one is Roger Hodgeson. The guy on the piano is Rick Davies, who sings lead on some of their songs. Once you hear more of their stuff, you'll be able to instantly tell who sings what.

"Supertramp Paris" broke all kinds of records for a live album. It was the cleanest, purest sounding live recording ever, for instance. It sold better than any live record before it. But the video wasn't released for decades; until two or three years ago, when I saw it on YT., I had no idea that the video existed.
With Supertramp, you can actually forego the studio versions and simply react to them live. That is how precisely they reproduce live, their studio playing and sound quality.

Yay. Supertramp with their Prog Pop. Easier vs Genesis, Yes, ELP etc but still very interesting shifts in the songs. This album have a lot of good passages and I hope yoy’ll like it. Rudy, Asylum and Crime of the Century my favorites but all song are good🤞

I couldn't help but comment on a few things you said during the course of this reaction in regards to Genesis and not being able to 'figure out' how to shoot a 'pro' concert... if by that you mean a show with a clear picture and quality sound then I have to tell you that Genesis 'figured it out' way before Supertramp ever did.. you've got the '72 show in Belgium, the old standby concert from '73, a fairly new and brilliantly shot show from France in '73, of course Genesis 'in concert' from '76 beautifully shot just weeks after Phil took over for Pete as vocalist... then there is the 'Duke' show in '80.. not the best but it only gets better through the 80's from there... and by the way... I'm not sure if Rick indulged on a regular basis but I'm more than sure Roger is high... if you check him out halfway through the show where it looks like they just came back from a break and he sits down to do 'Even in the Quietest Moments' with John then you will see what I mean...

Oh COOL! (Genesis and Supertramp were my two favorite bands in high school) LOVE this album! (and it's only their 3RD Best album!! The next two, Crisis, What Crisis?, and Even In The Quietest Moments) are even better!
I prefer Hodgson (higher pitch voice... guitarist / keyboardist) to Davies (keyboardist) in their songs... but they worked wonderfully together and formed quite the powerhouse songwriting punch. Davies shines on this album with Rudy, and the title track.
Genesis filmed their 1973 Selling England tour wonderfully... but absolutely nothing on The Lamb... (1974/75)... that was the hole in their video resume.
These guys are amazing, Ryan... Enjoy the ride!

Nobody really knows what prog is. The point is that the musicians wanted to make music that is not limited by a genre. So it is difficult to define a genre that is no genre.
