The game should explain it from the get-go, I agree. Either way, you can pause the game during battles, pausing also brings up the input commands for casting spells. Hold A, then input the directional inputs for the spell you want, then release A, Arle will cast that spell. You can also do a basic physical attack by double tapping right on the D-pad but its damage is dire so I don't recommend it. Holding left blocks to slightly reduce damage as well, and up can be pressed to jump, which can completely dodge some attacks.
