I always loved heavy music from late 90s to 2000s, especially all of the individual scenes around the US. But I always felt the inner drive to search for something that would blow my mind, but didn't know what. As lame as it might be, but those early deathcore bands just hit differently...the merging of so many sub-genres into a refreshed Sound
You inspired a lot of hope in myself Chris. That was badass. Hearing you say refer to your younger self as someone who ".couldn't even talk.." . Then to address where that stems from. Insecurity, anger etc. Resonates deeply. Gotta create something. Appreciate your honesty. Anecdote: 1998 Pico Rivera. I'm at my cousins place, I'm 7. We go to his friends pad across the street. His name is Chris. Starts playing Deicide as soon as we step inside. My life changed that day. R.I.P Chris
I was gonna see you guys 2012 All stars tour I beat myself up all the time for missing that and for telling myself I’ll just see them next time they’re near my town I never saw Mitch live but I still support you guys you guys are legendary.
Garza is a living legend, but it's easy to forget just how incredibly influential his music and his attitude have been on the deathcore scene from the start because he's such a chill and humble dude. I've rubbed shoulders with him at local IE metal shows and he's happy to just be one of us. "The Cleansing" will also be an album close to my heart because of him and Mitch. \m/
"I love pizza and beer, dude, and friends. Friends are free" that has to be the most humble and dopest shit I have ever heard. What a cool and down to earth human being. His nervousness throughout was actually extremely calming. You just know he's trying be himself in a world full of carbon copy mouth breathers.
What a sad story about mitch in the hospital dying. I remember seeing SS at a small club in my town in Maine. Mitch dove off the stage on like the first song. He cracked his head on the floor, never missed a beat. He got back on stage and his head was gashed open and he was bleeding all over the stage. He performed the entire set like that. Had to be at least 10 songs. LEGEND!! R.I.P.
Chris Garza gives me the vibes of an innocent kid, hung out with him once in a hotel room, with some guys from Suffocation and half of Suicide Silence and he is such a pure soul, love this guy.
As some who works in healthcare seeing the pain in Garzas eyes as he talks about seeing Mitch just floods me with sadness cause you never forget those moments and they haunt you forever as if it were yesterday.
I was extremely fortunate to have played with SS on the Cleansing CD Release Show in Fredericksburg, VA. We ran into the guys behind the venue amd the next thing i know, Im sitting in their van with the entire band smoking the cheebas for like two hours straight. Some of the absolute best people ive ever met in the world! Mitch and the rest of the guys treated us just like we’d been on tour with them for the last month! A local, but not directly local, band fanning out and wanting to share my Trainwreck and Jack Herer woth some of the coolest people on the planet. People that I genuinely looked up to, and was inspired by. I know you probably don’t remember this, but its a memory ill never forget!! Love you guys ❤
Finn, this is one of the best interviews I've ever seen of anyone. Chris being his vulnerable self and giving him that space to open up and share the deepest and truest feelings and keeping it real is so valuable and I have even more respect for him and Suicide Silence now. We hardly ever get to see this side of the person on that level and the world is lacking realness now a days. Being in a band myself, I could relate to so many of those things and made Chris look like an actual human being. This is GOLD standard stuff. The world needs more talks like these and come together as a community and deal with problems in the correct away. And man, next time I meet Chris, he's getting a big hug and showing my appreciation. Hands down to your efforts. Let's keep this going, Cheers!
Wore my RIP mitch shirt to my first SS concert I was at the barricade for and both Mark and Garza pointed at me and put their hands over their heart. Ended up getting Dan Kenny's bass pick. Provided me with the best soundtrack to my school experience as a teenager and still jam every record still regularly. Love his podcast too
Mate. This is rough, but I'm glad as fuck that you guys are still striving and trying and giving it a red hot go because modest people like you and your band deserve it.
Been a fan of SS since the early Myspace days. The first deathcore band I ever heard, I remember putting your songs on my profile to feel like the biggest badass, because that what I felt like listening to SS!! Since then i've seen you at warped tour, large venues, and small club shows. Shoutout to Garza, and the rest of the camp, keep rocking 4L
I met Chris during a meet and greet back in 2014. He was super chill and humble. Told him the time I finally played his Schecter signature while I was visiting in England and he was so stoked on what I had to say.
14:47 Good to hear George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher stuck by these blokes during the hard times. He is the epitome of Death Metal. Suicide Silence new song "You Must Die" is a banger btw🤘🏾
Goes to show that basically the top gun of Death Metal absolutely loves hardcore and talks about his love for New York punk/hardcore. Isn't prejudice towards the newer guys in deathcore like all the other twats who seem to shit on anybody who's in the next generation of heavy music and knows talent and cool dudes when he sees it. I love to hear they're good friends and coming together as humans and through the music also.
Ive been a SS fan for years but I've been becoming a fan of Chris through his pod. Such a wholesome dude and I love to see him speak on all of the struggles he's been through. Helps me keep things in perspective to keep moving forward. Love you man!
I haven’t listened to a lot of Suicide Silence but I really do like Chris. His podcast is pretty neat as well. The fact that he got an OG death metal grumpy fuck like Glen Benton on his podcast immediately gave him props in my book. Totally killer dude, sweetheart, and an overall great dude.
Ever since i saw him talk in the Mitch Lucker documentary, I knew he had a great soul and love for Korn and 90s metal in general. They wrote the best riffs in these genre
This interview is so real, Chris is so awesome for getting this deep on this. I remember seeing the video of him and Mark showing "Bludgeoned To Death" then being a little older (but still in my teens) and seeing them on the Time To Bleed Tour and to see the life changes and journey to this point is so cool. Thank you Finn and Chris and SS!
Grew up seeing them @ the Showcase in Corona. So blessed to see them play @ that time. This interview got me all emo but its the interview I think every SS fan has wanted to hear from the band. Chris is awesome i'm even more of a fan now. Just subbed to Chris' yt channel the other day ! Thanks for this interview keep up what u guys are doing. IE deathcore rules all 🤘🏽
i see in chris a friend and i never met him. just the way he is, such a genuine folk with humble thoughts. man i would love having a beer with him! nice interview finn btw!
I love these interviews so much. Probably my favorite content that you do considering we always disagree on so many things subjectively about music lmao I'm still salty about the woe is me comments 🤣
@@BigSleep3750 dude, chiodos are a great group of musicians and Craig is a power house of a vocalist and lyricist. Finn is trippin hard with that take lol
@@EnvisionedBlindness Finn , Has been and always will be a shit stirer. I don't take most of his takes seriously. hes the same dude who's said in reference to fonzilla any press is good press.
Honestly never was the biggest SS fan, wasn't really my flavor of music growing up but I knew about the whole tragedy around Mitch and the band. I've listened to every second of this interview so far and Chris is right on the money about so many things, all the lessons he's learned from being in the band can apply to every aspect of life. Great interview Finn! And thanks to Chris for sharing the wisdom he's gained. Wishing SS the best 🤘🏼
Respect and love for the man is talking about the death of his best friend and not fall into tears and have a continuous conversation, nice talk, great and real interview
I think it’s really sad how shallow people in the music industry can be, when he was talking about how everyone wanted to be their friends when they were the hottest shit around and how everyone disappeared when they fell on hard times.
I've never listened to Suicide Silence by own will, always a friend of mine was listening, but I decided to see this sice I enjoy Finn's content. From now on big respect for Suicide Silence
I ran into Chris at a show in chain reaction and he noticed my mortician shirt and came up to me. we just talked about that band for like 20 mins. I love Chris
I love Garza him and mark are the chillest musicians I’ve ever met and I’ve met at least 100 metal bands between touring as musician myself and just being a fan but meeting Garza was one of the most chill experiences of my career and life he paved the path for many and even tho I’m older than he is lol he is by far one of the most humble and down to earth dudes.
Chris is without a doubt the nicest dude I've ever met from a metal band. I used to work at a venue in Erie, PA and they come through once. We helped their roadies with all their gear and he just talked guitars and Nu Metal with me all day.
Let me tell you. I just seen. Suicide Silence at louder than life. 9/23 yesterday. They were biggest surprise of all the bands. They got the crowd so hyped. I’m 48. And love metal. This performance was just the best. Great interview. Chris is great Definitely buying the album 🔥🔥🔥😎
Good Job Finn :) I appreciate you at least trying to get an answer about Alex. The band seemed so happy when they toured with Jinjer last year, I saw them live in person in St. Pete Fla. All the tour vlogs seemed like they were having a blast together & on the final one it was a lovefest! So he's saying drugs? I don't see how Tati would be with a destructive person like that? Oh Well he's back behind the kit again, gonna be playing for POD on Jinjer's US tour this fall/winter!
Finn makes a good point most people tend to think of metal musicians like they’re the characters in metalocalypse but honestly a lot of these dudes are extremely intelligent and down to earth it’s honestly refreshing considering the mainstream scene copy pasted pop drones
Crazy to hear Chris say he didn’t like become the hunter I loved that record. And also I remember going to local shows in the mid 2000s and yes people got beat up for wearing slipknot shirts and shit, crazy times man.

People will let you know if they like it & as a musician putting yourself out there you have to take the criticism good or bad! I respect dudes who take the good & bad well & are honest & open about it!
I thought their self titled album was one of their best. The way it was produced, it had this muddy sound too it, like they didn’t go in and edit every note to line up perfectly on each bar. It sounds like they’re playing live the whole album. And the songs are great. Some I like a bit more than others, but overall I thought it was an absolutely great album.
