Finally my husband went back to work after our holidays, and I have the house to myself 😀, so now I can binge watch you, Ali 😀. I've just started a crochet temperature blanket for my youngest Granddaugther, Sally. She was born in February, so I have a lot to catch up on!
Love the use of a little cork mat to block small amounts of knitting. Never thought of that! Perfect for a little guage swatch
How delightful after a very busy few weeks to log on and find daily vlogs from you!! That is SO annoying about the school shoes. Surely they could have made an exception for the last few days. I love the blanket you are doing for Lillia. Very pretty. I'm now off to binge the other days' vlogs!!
Tomorrow my nearly 26 year old son moves 5 hours away to Chicago. He finished his MSW and has achieved a social work job. The only thing he asked for(last night) is some green wash cloths. I am frantically making the first one now. He's taking the two blankets I made with him.

I’m knitting a pair of Floofy House Socks! The colors are a bright fuschia with purple speckles. So bright and cheery! I’m going to make them longer because in the winter I like long warm fluffy socks!!

I totally understand your frustration. If I ever find a sticker that says, "I knit so I don't murder people" I am going to buy it in bulk and put it up on go mugs, my car and project notebooks! I am knitting a baby sweater for my daughter's friend's baby. It is the Mainstay Hoodie by RowRowand Kades.
I have a magnet on my work locker that says that.
Hi Ali. As a head of year I often have to make the " shoe" or other uniform telephone calls. It's horrid, especially as a parent/grandparent myself. I feel your pain, I truly do.
Just have to say I am loving the blanket, those colours are wonderful together, so pretty.

What a fabulous surprise to find another daily vlog series just as I was starting to cook the supper! I'm still making wire framed project bags! I really can't quite believe it!! I'm beyond grateful ❤

I have been crocheting a lot lately. I am making the Neat Wave blanket by Lucy of Attic 24 into a prayer shawl. Alos, I have a massive cotton dish cloth stash. So, I have found a few crochet dish cloth and hot pad patterns. The small projects are great for summer makes.
I am currently knitting my version of Lion Brand's 2024 temperature blanket, just scaled up for living in hell's front porch, aka Arizona. It's in acrylic and hot as you know what to knit but it's two rows a day so manageable. I'm 3/4's of the way through cross stiching a quote by DMX that I found on etsy and working on a spring embroidery pattern with cherry blossoms and song birds. I do have the Trust pattern by hoops and crosses ready to go when I finish my current cross stitch piece. Thank you for your making vlogs. It's so enjoyable to craft along and watch at the end of a long day.
I would 100% go to an op shop (as we say here in Australia - flea market in UK?) for a week of shoe wearing!!! 🙌🏾❤

It is so annoying when schools (or any establishment) won't bend the rules just a little for such a short time. What if it was someone who could not afford even a pair of cheap shoes....lovely vlog xx
I am currently participating in 2 mystery stitch alongs. One is the Spooky House by Satsuma Street and the other is Floralies by Jardin Prive. They are keeping me on my toes. I have not had much of a desire to knit other crochet over the hot summer that we are having on the east coast of the US.
I received my Wonderland Walks yarn yesterday. It is gorgeous!! I knew I should have ordered 2 fingering skeins instead of 1. Guess I’ll be paying shipping again to Texas. I want to make all the things with this color. Planning on a cowl in DK. Socks and a shawl in fingering.

The school shoes thing is so frustrating. We've taped up shoes with duct tape before to get through that last week of term because runners were against school rules! Im crocheting a ripple blanket and starting to knit my first ranunculus, no socks on the go at the moment though. Your blanket is looking gorgeous.

I come from working in schools and my husbands a teacher, but I hate secondary schools and their silly rules. I agree with uniform but they are so inflexible. It's a couple of days !!
I am showing my age here - but when I was young many moons ago, when we got holes in our shoes, my mom put cardboard in the shoe(s). I cannot ever remember being embarrassed by it, so assume it was common practice then.😂
I did suggest this solution to Phoebe but it wasn't met with enthusiasm 😅

Thank you for making another 'series'. It is nice to follow you throughout the week. Here in The Netherlands we don't have schooluniforms, sometimes I think we should. Listening to your story about the shoes, I don't understand why they have to be so strict. (Ihope you don't mind I had to smile when you told later the trainers were needed on monday 😊)
And then a disapointed lunch, it was not the start of the day you wanted and needed, luckely you had a lot of happy mail!

Ali I feel your frustration, I have had the same email and phone call from my sons school he had 5 days left, I then got a further phone call to say if he turns up to school tomorrow with trainers on we will PUNISH HIM which I turned round and said I don't think you will punish him for me not buying him new shoes, that's a me problem not his fault, so I sent him in his trainers explaining again that he has 4 days left I will buy him new ones in the holidays, that evening I got a email saying he will be in 1hr detention after school 🤬 His summer school holidays started early "due to him being POORLY" and my Husband is going to turn up for detention 🙈 My Son has sensory issues especially with shoes it takes me a stressful 3hrs to find a pair he can wear, I honestly don't get schools these days because obviously him wearing trainers is going to stop him from working hard 🤷♀
Anyway sorry for the rant lol I will get back and watch the rest of your podcast now 😊 Tracy x
Yay another week of making fun!! Sorry about the dufous school shoe thing. I’m working on a kind of odd project this evening. Crocheting some bright cheerful flowers for my daughter to take home to FL and use to cover up the black post that sticks up behind her monitor and messes with her home office decor and her sensibilities. 😂. Since she inherited those sensibilities from me I feel compelled to try to help. See you tomorrow!!

I have always wanted to join in with the Advent yarn. I am very new to knitting but am pushing through the process. I do crochet, embroidery, sew, and quilt. Busy hands, I say, are the best. 🤦🏼♀️ the stubbornness of me would have absolutely refused to buy new shoes, it’s absurd. My son has split his trousers and I did try and sew them back up but it lasted about ten minutes! But the school were fine with a note and he is wearing his pe shorts!
I nearly went down the refusing route too 😅 Just to make the point! I will be writing a strongly worded email though 😆 Just found out she is in her own clothes for the final day too, deep breaths....

Oh, to answer your Q re what I am making now, I am juggling a few WIPs, but priority must go to Ophelia Talks' picnic blanket which I started on April 23, 2021. The yarn I needed to finish it arrived from Wool Warehouse today (along with some extra indulgences - OK, OK a LOT of extra indulgences...). I just need to finish connecting 2 pieces and add a flower to one of the squares, then I will be giving it to a friend who loves going on picnics. I realized that I am not a picnic person, but the blanket is lovely and I know she will cherish it. It's really cool because it forms its own carrying bag. Such a clever design.
Oh my goodness - another week of making - great - a lovely surprise. Oh, oh, oh I can feel your frustration re the shoes- and then the wear trainers on Monday message 🙈….. I am knitting a fabulous jumper by Jaki Bogg of HotButter Yarns called Back Yard. I bought a kit at a yarn show in Cumbria and am delighted with it. See you tomorrow and what a treat. X🧶

I bought the yarn purely because of the colourway name....Second Star to the Right - a nod to Peter Pan. 🌟🧚♀ Lilia's blanket is looking fabulous.

Looking forward to your future days of making. My mum had the same problem when I was in secondary school. She took me to Peter Jones (department store) to buy the regulatory school uniform and she deemed the skirt to be too short (I was taller than others then) so she decided to take me to the Chelsea Girl store to buy a suitably plain (but longer) skirt for school but I got sent home. She was not amused! She also kept me off when there was a class showing the insides of rats (not pictures) for a biology lesson as she didn’t believe that it was of any relevance to teaching sex education and didn’t believe in animals being used for such things. I suppose she was quite a rebellious parent for the 1970s! Lilia’s blanket is stunning and love the colours she chose. I’m currently working on some knitted fingerless mitts. Thank you again for your daily vlogs to cheer up my day and escape. X.

So glad you mentioned ballet because now I can comment about thinking of you last night. We watched TwoSetViolin learning ballet. They are two 30-year-old guys who play violin but wanted to experience ballet. They are always funny. I would knit my shawl, but we have been cooked day and night for 2 weeks straight. Bake, boiled, fried, steamed, sautéed, grilled, broiled, her in New England, USA. Food is the only good thing about summer.
I shall look them up - sounds like my kind of thing! Bet they're better at it than me though 😅 We are set to be lightly simmered here for the next few days 🥵
Hi, I just made a small Liberty squares quilt and a Rainbow quilt for my 3 1/2 year old twins who are arriving today from Shanghai for a month! Also trying to finish a couple of jumpers for my 1 month old grandson. Just hope they will still fit him when it cools off here! Love your channel 😊
Yay, yay, yay!! I just love week of making vlogs!! Sorry for your frustrating school administration experience.. boy have I been there.. somehow school administrators seem to thrive on saying "no" sometimes and they lose all sense of logic.. sigh.. anyway.. I'm currently whipping up a Baby Ripple Blanket in PINK!.. my first pink baby blanket as everyone I know seems to be having boys but I'm super happy to work on it as a surprise for someone in my office to give to her new niece, born yesterday. She made the mistake of gasping at the Baby Ripple I gave to our coworker at her baby shower on Saturday and gushing how special it was to be handmade so I decided to make another right then and there and happily put together yarn from my small stash to do it. Yay! These are super fun to make. Look forward to a great week of making!!

Hi Ali. What a shame that your daughter's school doesn't see they should be setting an example for students in this case. Thank goodness we have crochet to calm frustrations.
I am done with my blanket made from my first ever yarn advent from 2023. I bought an extra skein of wool to use in the border. First a round to straighten the top and bottom as I used the millstone stitch. Then comes the fun of designing a border around it. I bought a pretty sage green to use.

Thank you, Ali, for another lovely and soothing video. I hope, if Phoebe does outgrow her barely-worn shoes over the summer, that you can pass them onto another child. I know that secondhand shoes aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm sure there's a family out there who would appreciate saving the money next term! I am currently working on the "No Need to Panic" sweater by Casapinka, which is a top-down round yoke sweater, which I'm making in cotton yarn with short sleeves so I can wear it in warm weather. Here in New Jersey it's currently 93 degrees F (34 degrees C) so honestly even a short-sleeve sweater isn't very appealing, but I hope I can wear it soon. I hope you're done with your heat wave there in the UK! Looking forward to your next lovely video tomorrow, they're a lovely part of my day!

The shoe frustration sounds horrible. My daughter's school asked for indoor and outdoor shoes - sneakers being acceptable. A few weeks of the school year, including the last 2, were colour days when they didn't have to wear uniforms. Some flexibility is needed occasionally.
Working on the kitchner stitch for the first sock of a pair. Crocus shorties by Barb Brown as part of Ancient Arts Yarns (Calgary, Canada) as part of their summer sockalong. I'm behind as this was June's pattern. Colourway is Great Scott ... think highlighter blue.

Sorry the school is being pernickity. The university blanket is coming along well. The colours look great. I am looking forward to see you this week. I've just finished knitting another baby cardi at the request of a neighbour and waiting on some yarn to arrive to make a baby blanket. This is all inbeween packing and sorting in readyness for our move to the coast.
Hi Ali, that’s so frustrating about the school shoes and I would have thought the school would have been more understanding. Thank goodness for crafting to soothe matters! I’m currently knitting cat blankets with my WI craft group for our local Cat Protection and also crocheting a cardigan which is taking me ages to finish 😊
If I was you I would contact the school board and ask them what kind of responsibility they are teaching the kids regarding waste and fast fashion etc. I would also see if you can contact a local newspaper. When my late husband was a boy he got the cane for wearing a corduroy jacket because his mum wouldn’t buy him a blazer and he was big for his age so a used one wasn’t an option. This is about 58 years ago! You would have thought that they would have been more understanding nowadays.

Hi Ali, I can feel your frustration!! Love Lilia's blanket. I am making baby stuff for expected 1st Grandbaby. Third week on the blanket though, why is it taking so long? am doing a new stitch to me, bubble stitch.
Have a look for some 2nd hand school shoes in a charity shop, I know you usually can't find stuff when your looking for it in them but it's worth a go.

I have a couple questions about the UK school year. I’m confused that your daughter is in school in July. In Canada, both elementary and high school or secondary school as it’s also called, are done by the end of June and then students don’t go back to school until after Labour Day, which is the first Monday in September. Some areas do go back to school no last week of August. Also, there is up to two weeks off at Christmas time , depending on the day of the week that Christmas and New Year’s Day fall . Then there is March break, which is two weeks.
You have mentioned “half-term”, and now, students being in school in July.
What is the school year like in the U.K.?
What happens if you don’t go out and buy a new pair of shoes now? Will they not allow Phoebe to go to school? I would just say sorry, couldn’t make it to the stores.
Thanks for the question Lorraine! I answer this on the Day 2 vlog (which will be published today) but in short the school year where we are in England starts beginning of September and is divided into 6 terms of roughly 6 weeks. So they have a half term at the end of October (usually 1 or 2 weeks depending on the school), then roughly 2 weeks off at Christmas, then a week off at end of February, the Easter break (usually about 2 weeks), the June half term (1 week) and then they finish the school year around the third week of July. It varies if the school is private, or depending on location etc :) x
I would continue to send her in the black trainers, what’s the worst they can do? Otherwise I would keep her at home and get them to send work to her for the last few days of term xxx

Great vlog...not to reignite your frustration but what would happen if you just didn't get the new school shoes...not in the uk so curious what the repercussions would be...I find the school rules re dress, hair, absence approval etc in the uk rather confounding...tia
Good question! Probably nothing much would happen, but I didn't want Phoebe to worry about it or get into trouble so I caved in the end, but I will be writing to them to point out the idiocy in their inflexibility 😅 The uniform is supposed to make sure everyone is equal (nobody standing out as not being able to afford the latest labels etc) but I do feel they get silly with it sometimes - I could rant for hours about how hair colour doesn't affect ability to learn...😆
I can't believe that the school made you buy some new shoes for four days of school is scandalous. I wouldn't have bought them. If I had children I wouldn't send them to school would home school them 😊

Honestly I would have just kept sending her in trainers, what are they going to do? They don't do any actual school work in the last week anyway. Cheap shoes tend to be uncomfortable shoes and fall apart quickly. That's a ridiculous thing to say to a parent in the current financial climate 🙄
