It’s sometimes impossible to see a skier who is sitting low in the water, waiting for their boat to start and then pick up speed. Any time a skier is down in the water, having either ceased skiing or preparing to ski, there’s supposed to be a spotter waving a red warning flag on the ski boat. The spotter’s job is to keep an eye on the status and location of the skier and to keep the ski boat’s driver aware of approaching vessels. But sometimes ski boaters don’t bother with spotters or flags. It’s always best for any approaching boat driver to give any ski boat a wide berth, since that ski boat’s users might not be following the rules of safe water skiing.

Thank you, you seem to be the only other person that actually listened to the news report. She was strapped into her board and getting ready to yell HIT IT. Takes a minute or two sometimes if the waves are choppy with the rider trying to get straightened out and the boat to get the slack out of the line. Just your head and shoulders and maybe half your board are visible which is dangerous if flags aren't being used and other boats are not paying attention.

Also, where the heck were they skiing at? In the middle of open busy traffic water? When we ski in a lake we make damn sure no other boats are anywhere near us! The incident looks like it took place in an area that resembles the open water that leads into the entry area for the marina in Lake Havasu, AZ....you need to find a Cove or an area way off to the side somewhere when you're going to pull a skier You can't just have boats flying around all over the place where you're pulling someone. And the FLAGS... they should have been waving like CRAZY in water like THAT.
So so sad. God comfort her family and friends as they mourn this loss :(

As a life-long river boater who has pulled dozens of skiers, I have to think it's partly the fault of the tow-boat driver, it's their responsibility to keep their skier safe, if there are approaching boats around they have to steer way clear of traffic, which I have to believe was highly visible this far off shore. If their skier goes down they immediately have to turn around and protect the skier, if that means getting between the downed skier and the approaching boat, so be it. If they neglected to have an observer to immediately yell "Down!" o the drive can take protective action, they are both partly at fault. Also, if there is any kind of traffic the skier must be trained, when they fall, to remove their board or ski and hold it as high as they can to let traffic see them and steer clear. Of course, there could have been lapse of judgment and alcohol in both drivers, and poor training of the skier. The jury is out, but downed skiers are hard to see amongst the chop if they don't hold their ski up or the towboat doesn't raise their red/orange ski flag high as soon as the skier goes down. Lot of blame to go around, but the driver who hit the skier should have been way clear of towboat activity. If the towboat was slow to know they had a downed skier and turn around, and if they didn't raise a flag, or the skier didn't raise their board, they were asking for trouble. No excuse for drinking or a hit and run...but don't put all the blame in one place when you don't know the facts.

Questions NBC News never bothers to ask.
    1. Nobody took a photograph of the fleeing boat?
    2. Nobody with experience likes to water ski in choppy water. Perhaps the other boat didn't expect or notice a head bobbing between the waves.
    3. What were the alleged observers doing on the ski boat?
    4. How far was the skier from the ski boat when the other boat hit her?

How much you wanna bet the ski/tow boat/yacht gets SUED? They had no business skiing or tubing in the ocean. And the tow boat is basically a large yacht not meant for towing. The type of boat screams new boater. Towing skiers and inflatables takes experience. The choppy ocean is no place for it.

i have had boats towing skiers on our big lake, come past my sitting boat not even 50 feet...with water skiers or towed craft. this was BEFORE our sherif started patrolling our big lake. lots of drunk drivers were getting drowned before. many other times i have seen boats deliberately following skiers like 100 or 200 feet behind the towed craft or device and towing boat driver and passengers doing nothing about it. drunk or callous idiots driving super unsafely at anytime is cause of these deaths. clueless impotent tow boat drivers as well. no flag up, no loud warning horn to blow, and way to darn slow to circle back to protect the person down in the water.

You have to pass all kinds of tests to get a driver's license. But any fool can jump behind the controls of a boat and start zooming around the water.
Florida needs a boating license law modeled after the law to operate a motor vehicle--same reason for both (public safety).

People!! She wasn't up on the skis skiing! She had fallen so she was in the water with most likely just her head above water, so the boat that hit her most likely had no clue they hit her! You can see in the photo taken right after it happened that the water was not calm, it was choppy, and that is enough to mask a person in the water. Meaning, It makes it really hard for boaters to see a person in the water. This was just an awful accident, the police have the boat that they believe hit her, and the person it belongs to.
