  • Located across the intersection from • Otis hydraulic glass e... , there used to be a very similar hydraulic elevator. It has since been replaced by this elevator, which is a traction model. However, rather than having the motor at the shaft top and 1:1 or 2:1 transmission for both the cab and the counterweight, this elevator uses a much more complex drive system.
First of all, it actually uses different transmissions for the cab and the counterweight. While the cab is configured as 2:1 transmission, the counterweight is using a 4:1 transmission, meaning it that its travel distance is half that of the cab. This is achieved by having the cables attached to the shaft top, run to the cab and back up to the motor on the cab side, with a similar setup on the counterweight side, where the cables are also mounted at the shaft top and then run to the counterweight and back up. However, on the counterweight side, the cables are run to the counterweight an additional time and only then go to the motor, which causes the difference in transmission.
In addition to that, the drive system of this elevator has some further complications. For some reason, the motor is not mounted at the shaft top but on the side at the upper landing, somewhat similar to a bottom drive model. Also, while in theory the cables could be routed up from the motor and back down to the counterweight via a single unpowered sheave, this elevator uses a series of three fixed sheaves for cable alignment. Note that in this case, a fixed sheave is a sheave that has a fixed position in the shaft and is attached neither to the cab nor to the counterweight.
The complete cable routing is thus as follows: The cables are attached to the shaft top, run under the cab, to the motor via an unpowered sheave at the shaft top, and from the motor via the aforementioned series of sheaves to the counterweight. From there, the cables go up to another unpowered sheave that is located below the motor at ground level, then back to the counterweight. Finally, the cables are mounted below the motor, next to the previous fixed sheave.
