The beloved Willie Clancy Summer School / Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy begins this Saturday in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland. Sadly, I haven’t seen Miltown in 4 years - that after drinking from that source of music and friendships for seven or eight summers of my life. That source won’t run dry, however, and no matter what obstacles the others create, they have no power to erase what’s been, and less still to disunite us, music lovers, in our pursuit of our life’s need. As Antóin Mac Gabhann said in 2012:
“The music for people here - it’s something that’s ingrained in the blood. People say it’s a passion but it’s something different than passion. It becomes a part of you... Passion doesn’t describe it at all - it’s a daily need, it’s something that gets into the blood, and it’s in your blood for your life.” (Quote from “In the Name of Willie Clancy” filmed by Myles O’Reilly)
On that fine summer day in 2017 I was so very privileged to have a tune with both Antóin Mac Gabhann and Caitlín Nic Gabhann, and the beauty, the energy, the driving force of their music is still with me to this day. I bring it everywhere I go - and while I may not be able to share this energy and tunes with you this year in Miltown, I’ll be doing it here on this page and on my Facebook page. Let’s call it Tony’s Musical Journeys!
