- "Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and also known as D.C. or Washington, is the capital city of the United States of America. Founded after the American Revolution, Washington was named for George Washington, the first president of the United States and a Founding Father. As the seat of the United States federal government and several international organizations, Washington is an important world political capital. Located on the Potomac River bordering Maryland and Virginia, the city is one of the most visited cities in the United States, with more than 20 million visitors annually." - Wikipedia.org
"Washington, D.C. had an estimated population of 705,749 as of July 2019, making it the 20th-most populous city in the United States and giving it a population larger than that of two U.S. states. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington's metropolitan area, the country's sixth-largest (including parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia), had a 2017 estimated population of 6.2 million residents."
"The three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in the district: Congress (legislative), the president (executive), and the Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profits, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States, AARP, the National Geographic Society, the Human Rights Campaign, the International Finance Corporation, and the American Red Cross."
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew boards a near-empty Washington Metro commuter train from Largo Town Center (Silver Line), and heads into Washington D.C. Exiting the Metro train system at McPherson Square Station, JOM kicks off a tour of many of D.C.'s well-known monuments, buildings, and sightseeing locations. Not the most comprehensive tour by any means, but enough to catch your attention and encourage a visit of your own!

From where you were in Georgetown at 23:49, you can take that gravel path 350 miles all the way to Pittsburgh, car-free! I highly recommend it if you are looking for a multi-day adventure. The 2 trails are called C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage
Chris, two years ago I rode the C&O all the way to Cumberland, Maryland. and then took the Amtrak back to DC. Due to a time crunch, ran out of time to head to Pittsburgh. But, thank you anyway!
There are two videos here on the channel, but not in my newest style of filming.
I wouldn't leave my bike anywhere.....
Really enjoyed the video !! Thank you so much
So cool watching you ride the trails I've been on. Nice perspective. Mt Vernon Trail, at least the part I saw you on, is pretty beaten up now.
Nice to see my home town. Thanks for the tour. That part of DC (monuments, museums and government buildings) is a world class tourist experience. You touched on some other parts of town but you could do several more videos of other areas that are equally as interesting but completely different. I’d love to see a tour of Rock Creek Park, or NE or NW or Anacostia or...anywhere the typical high school tour of DC doesn’t go.
this is one of my favorite wandering's around DC! thanks!
Thank you Mike!
Beautiful, thanks
Awesome!! You literally started down the street from the house. Love my town and hope you enjoyed your time here.
I LOVE the DC area, I typically stay with a friend in Upper Marlboro.
@@GravelCyclist Very cool.
What a great video of this very beautiful city.
Thank you Richard.
I’m never going to DC without my bike. That’s the way to do it. Thanks for the wonderful tour.
Thanks Rob!
Smart. When I moved here; I sold my car and bought more bikes. It’s less than 70 square miles and it doesn’t make sense to have a car in the area if you don’t venture out often.
I didn’t have my bike when I went. Walked almost everything you covered. Gotta have my bike next time. Thanks for the tour.
Bring a good quality U lock.
So many familiar places!
NoVA/DC Nostalgia Tour part III - thanks JOM! Yep, next trip you want to head all the way down the NoVA side to Mt. Vernon. The number of training runs I've taken on that path prepping for the Marine Corps Marathon...good memories. I'm still laughing over the navigational miscue; done it a few times myself as a newcomer when driving, no worries. So many familiar sights and locales. Glad I had the opportunity to live there when I did, and it's so much more bike-friendly today.
cool cool bike racing videos keep his creative and innovative spirit, Top
Really interesting, excellent video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed.
Cool video man, moving there soon maybe I'll see you on the trails! :)
Wonderful trip!
Thanks, I love DC!
You started in Largo. Good for you, mate
loved the tour of DC!
Thank you Kacy!
@@GravelCyclist if you want a tour of louisville, let me know or bourbon country (Bardstown). just wait till it's warmer!
At the end, that highway you were riding, that was the exact course used by the Tour de Trump for its DC stage in '89. And it was at that stage, that very highway, where Greg LeMond got his first good result in his long comeback from that hunting accident in '86. He placed third and all the top American riders were there, the 7-Eleven team and all. It was a crit, back and forth on that highway between the Pentagon and Rosslyn. And yeah, not sure you were supposed to ride on that shoulder, lol--probably should have been on the hiker/biker trail which runs along the water.
Thanks for the tidbits about Greg LeMond, always been a fan. The road shoulder excursion was a bit dodgy, glad it worked out, but I do like to show how rides go a little awry at times, oops! :)
i love this channel, i just discovered it the other day.
do you ever plan on revisiting towns and cities you have been to before?
Hello there! I did record a video from a 2022 visit to DC, I don't know if I have enough video to edit? To answer your question, there are many towns I have revisited, or plan to again. Thanks for your question.
Nice. I ride around DC every day and have been experimenting with videos
Video editing can the most time consuming part... good luck!
@@GravelCyclist if you need a place to work on your bicycle or have a beer, I have a house in Clarendon you can use. I also have a place in Florida, my happy spot
@@Arlington411 Many thanks, that is an incredibly kind gesture.
Enjoyed that. The USMC memorial you twice referred to should read 'Iwo Jima' though 😊
Thank you. Appreciate the correction as well.
We lived there for five years. Beautiful and very interesting city. This video brought me a lot of nice memories. Thanks GC!
O man, I wish I would have been there with you from the start. Skip Metro, ride Central Avenue to just inside the Beltway, at McDonald's turn left, then another turn or two and up to Forestville, then straight to the District, down Pennsylvania Avenue and over the bridge and Capitol Hill is straight ahead. Or stay on Central to Old Central at Addison Road and then get on Benning Road and I always enjoyed riding H Street to the bridge that leads to the train station. So many ways, so many sights, glad you were there.
Good to have all of these options!
@@GravelCyclist Yeah, the District and that whole area--Northern Virginia and Maryland and all--is great for riding. And I've ridden from Georgetown--north up Wisconsin Avenue--all the way to the state of Pennsylvania, a good ride on a two-lane road north of the District through Maryland.
@@robbchastain3036 Lovely! You would make an excellent tour guide.
@@GravelCyclist Thanks, just that I lived and worked there for a good long time and it was a good long run and there is a lot to the District and Maryland and Northern Virginia and you did really well for one visit and Metro is great with their bike accommodation, glad you got to experience that.
Literally took a screenshot of this post. Thanks man! I just moved to DC and looking for a nice bike ride 😄
Thanks for the tour. How long did it take to get around all that? I'm riding the C&O in April and hopefully spending a day in DC riding around to visit a bit before the train home.
Hi Jason, I knocked this tour out in about five hours. You could do it in less time sans playing around with a camera, etc.
Good tour of DC, I would recommend the next time you park at the Greenbelt Metro, from there you can take the Anacostia Trail into dc it follows the Anacostia river most of the way. Its a nice ride. On the Virginia side of the Potomac, you can ride all the way to George Washington's house in Mt Vernon, from there you can take a water taxi back to Alexandria or over to MD. I was driving to Florida the day you filmed this. The Air And Space Museum in Virginia is called the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum, I work nearby there. In Georgetown you road right over the C&O canal bike trail , it goes all the way to Pittsburgh. OMG how did you end up on that road???? Ok you are not a local. lol
Thank you, I really appreciate the tips from a local! Based on your suggestion, thinking I need to knock that out next trip. In 2018, I rode the C&O to Cumberland, Maryland, rode the Amtrak back, I have a couple of videos on the channel about that. As for me ending up on the Highway, whee!!!
I miss my rides in DC and Western Loudoun
These places just look look familiar. I'm surprised you didn't take one of the many bike trails into the the the city. However, riding the metro these days is quite an experience as you could end up having an entire car to yourself.
That is exactly what happened... and as usual, I was running late, so the Metro was uber efficient.
Pretty interesting. As an Australian with a daughter married, working in DC and living in Virginia. This is about as close as we can get.
Bob, I tried to show the Australian Embassy on camera, but its current location precluded that from happening. If it's any consolation, I would love to visit the Aussie homeland right now, but the current quarantine regulations make it untenable for me.
Used to work about a mile’s walk from Largo TC; way back when it opened. DC really is a neat city to bike thru. I won’t repeat what others have, but to say that you would have liked getting off the metro at Benning Rd then doing the Anacostia Trail or even biking thru SE DC and Capitol Hill. A bit less touristy than other areas but DC feel.
Likely be a Version 2 of this video, thank you for the feedback.
holy cow that meteor crater @0:17
Made a point to avoid that when I returned to the car later...
Have you ever done the C&O Canal? DC is a great starting point.
Yes, I have ridden the C&O to Cumberland... then took the Amtrak home. I have two videos on the channel about that experience.
How did you record? Did you strap a gopro on your head?
I like to flip a coin to guess whether I'll get the newer metro train or the old ones.
I rode the Metro about six times during my stay, I scored a new Metro train on one occasion.
@13:07 the additional arm is airandspace.si.edu/udvar-hazy-center
Thank you. I visited several years ago, hope to visit again in the future.
This is a question about your bike sizing. I might have heard or read in one of your bike reviews that you prefer a smaller size than what is recommended based on your height. With the smaller frame size, have you had any issues with toe overlap?
Toe overlap could be an issue, but that would generally be an issue only during low speed cornering, likely tight spots / u-turns. It all depends on the bike. Please remember, bike fitting is a personal issue, what works for me, may not work for you. IMHO, top tube length and head tube length are the most important numbers, everything else can easily be sorted (raise a seatpost, set back a saddle, etc). Good luck!
What camera did you use for this tour?? It is very steady.
GoPro Hero 7 Black. It also helps to have a steady hand.
Hey there I’m from Florida too! Planning to go to dc January, how would you say the COVID situation is there? Do you feel safe there in general! Thanks, lovely video!
Hi Morgan! At just about all times I was around anybody, I wore a mask. I practiced social distancing at all times, and felt very safe. If you take the Metro, I suggest non-peak times, but it is markedly quieter now that people are working remote / Covid is around. I wore a mask the entire time I rode the metro. Just about everyone I spotted was wearing a mask, which really helps!
@@GravelCyclist thank you so much!

thank you for visiting the capital visit
What is your camera please?
Go Pro Hero 7 Black.
No CC. No like.
Dude, talk to RUclips about it. CC is on by default in all of my videos.
