  • NOTE: an important section of this video was inadvertently left out (camera glitch), but is included on an updated video that can be found here: • BMW E61 (E60) 2006 530... I suggest you navigate to that version of the video (it includes details about removal of the left rear axle that is missing in the original (this) video).
    This video shows how to replace both rear CV axles on a 2006 530xi (Touring / Wagon). The process for the right axle is similar to both axles on most E60s. The left rear axle is very different on the wagon, so if you don't have a wagon you can skip the parts unique to that model.
    Getting the left rear axle out of the car proved to be the most difficult part of the process, requiring airing down the rear suspension. I did this by loosening the pneumatic lines from the pump / controller unit behind the right rear wheelwell, but it should be possible using INPA, ISTA or a BMW-specific scan tool (which would save some time and fiddly effort).
    It might be possible to remove the left rear axle by removing the left diagonal brace and the exhaust system hangers, allowing the exhaust to droop (you should be able to get about 6" or so of extra clearance that way). This may be an easier method for those who aren't comfortable with playing with the air suspension. If anyone does try this method, please (!) let me (us) know how it works out - I'm always looking for the easiest / best way to work on these (complex) cars.
    If this video helps you out, I'd appreciate it very much if you would subscribe to my channel. You'll be notified when I post other videos, which I do pretty regularly.

    Thank you so much for this. Just finished my fronts from your videos and Pelican Parts. And I still have a slight shake clearly in the back. Guessing I'll be doing the rears now.

      I chased a shake that ran me crazy for years. The ultimate solution? New exhaust hangers! Check out my video on the subject and see if that could be applicable to your car...

    All - when I made this video, I thought that a particular (and kind of important) video clip had been lost or had just not recorded (that happens sometimes...). Turns out, my camera had simply stashed it in a different location for no good reason. Anyway, I re-edited the video to include this portion (basically, the actual removal of the left rear axle after everything is apart), and posted it. RUclips does not allow editing an existing video (for reasons I understand) and I don't want to take this one down because of the helpful comments, etc. But do yourself a favor and navigate to the new, improved video at ruclips.net/video/FU2gPmjsJu8/видео.html If you watched this entire video already, you can see the part you missed by going to the 14:15 point on the linked video, and watching a minute or so of the video (which shows much more detail about getting that axle out).

      It's a distinct possibility. If it's cyclic, and matches your speed, it's more likely. Even moreso if you get a clunk when engaging Dor R (or moving forward or backward if it's a manual car).

      @@Mark_H_DIY I have the Bentley repair manual and it doesn’t have all the answers in it, but I was looking under my car last night at the rear and wondered about doing it. Right now my car is getting a new oil pan and gasket, and motor mounts, and front and rear suspension hopefully by this weekend done. I want to make a video of it but for me it’s a lot of work filming and doing the job, I need my car for work on Monday.. thanks again for time and effort you put into this video! What kind of spacers do you use? How much mm

    • @Mark_H_DIY
      @Mark_H_DIY  4 месяца назад +2

      I don't remember all the specs, but the wheels on the car (when this video was made) were from a newer (2015?) X5. I believe that the front spacers were 10mm and the rear 15mm, IIRC. Either way, the trick is to measure from the sidewall to the inner fender lip and then try to visualize how much you can move the sidewall out without interfering with the lip.

    How did you remove the long bolt? Mine is stuck cuz all the weight of the control arms is coming down on the bolt itself. Is that why you aired out the suspension?

    • @Mark_H_DIY
      @Mark_H_DIY  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you have to air down the suspension, or the tension on that bolt will be FAR too high.

    • @blackwarrior1897
      @blackwarrior1897 10 месяцев назад +1

      @xjnoise I commented on your update video. Thanks she car was all patched up yesterday. Had to get bottle jacks in order to relieve the tension off the bolt, then tap on the brake housing to knock it back into place. I tapped the bolt with a hammer and I was good to go. New axle was in place in about an hr. But your vid was helpful in understanding how everything works. So thanks.

    what were the symptoms

    • @Mark_H_DIY
      @Mark_H_DIY  4 месяца назад +1

      There was an intermittent vibration coming from the rear. It turns out that had nothing to do with the axles, though. Still, replacing them meant I didn't have to worry about them for another 100,000+ miles, so it was all good.

    • @Mark_H_DIY

      @@hanynowsky the issue actually ended up being worn out exhaust hangers. Add a certain speed and rpm, the rear of the exhaust system would oscillate intermittently. I did a video showing how this works, with the entire car on jack stands and rolling 60 mph in my garage. ;-)

      @@Mark_H_DIY Good to know. I think my rears are original at 160k. So they are due either way. If the rear up-hill shake doesn't go away, I'll check the exhaust. Love the E61. Not many around in the states.
