      Until 1900 women and kids were working all day in the mines. The women of Cornwall, all of my female ancestors, that's every single female ancestor of mine never had a day they did not work. In the last 120 years, they, Tregaskis, Curnow, Penrose, Laity, Richards, Bawden, Dart, didn't speak that reinvented language you've put there, it was their great great ancestors who spoke a bit of it. What's lost? My real, not reinvented past.

      Women more than 'helped'. They were it all. They mined, they farmed, they cooked, gave birth and educated. They did everything, with the acception of beiing allowed to sign up and fight, and, believe me, if they had been allowed, they would have done that as well.

    Listening to this in memory of Rick Rescorla, who died 22 years ago today in the September 11th attacks.
    Born in Cornwall, its reported that he sang Cornish and Welsh songs to keep people calm during evacuation.
    He saved over 2,500 lives that day, and sacrificed his own.
    We love you Rick, Rest in Peace.

There is also the movie "We Were Soldiers" that stars Mel Gibson as Hal Moore, that is based off the book. The movie was released in 2002. I don't either, but when I took the Cornish language exam (just grade one) following studying with the Tuesday night group in Saltash, we were told the exam was being used to measure the number of Cornish speakers, which in turn was used to lobby for funding from the European Commission (which rarely gives anything of value to those who can actually benefit from it!) for funding to promote the language. With all that in mind, although it's not my highest qualification, it is the one I am most proud of.
      Also the time leading up to the completion of the course- from a couple of years before I started studying that one year- I had been reading a lot around language endangerment, which remains a lifelong passion of mine, and it's great to be involved in one very rare success story of language revival rather than language death. This is overwhelmingly due to the character and determination of the Cornish people. Now I find myself thinking of resuming my studies.

      You forget the idea of a nation state brought about the existence of those states and countries, with their own culture and languages independent of each other. Your multinational country is why countries like France lost regional identity in favor of assimilation, such as the death of the languages of Britanny, Occitanie, Welsh and Irish.

    Trelawny was bishop of Bristol ! He was one of seven bishops that protested against James II attempt to stop anti-Catholic bigotry. The uprising wasn't in Cornwall but in and around Dorset and Somerset/Avon and stirred up by anti-papist sentiment. My Cornish ancestors fought in the King's cavalry in the Civil war defended county and captured territory for King Charles. Unlike Trelwany THEY DIDNT BETRAY James in 1688. That this some people claim as the Cornish anthem given the part the Church of England played in seeking to destroy Cornish language by the impostion of the common prayer book in 1549 is a perverse irony.

    • @kernowalbion4142
      @kernowalbion4142 3 года назад +3

      Sing this and you've been suckered. It was written by a Vicar born in Plymouth in Devon. Cornwall's anthem written by a Devonian?! Plymouth actually declared for Parliament at the outbreak of the Civl war and was beseiged by Cornish troops but never captured during the Civil War. Devon was Parliamentarian and and Cornwall was a Royalist stronghold. It was mostly Cornish troops that gave the Royalists one of their most notable victories and at Roundway Down in Devon in July 1643. The Trelawny that the lyrics should refer to are the First baronet imprisoned in the Tower by parliament for contempt in 1628. Certianly nothing to do with being associated with 1688 as these lyrics claim.

    • @chrisdugas1226
      @chrisdugas1226 3 года назад +4

      Yeah, I was just reading the Wiki about this song. Apparently, the guy who wrote this song, Robert Hawker, heard the Cornish talking fondly of Trelawny. He thought that they meant Sir John Trelawney, 3rd Baronet, Bishop of Bristol who got locked up by King James II and VII in 1688, so that's who he wrote the song about. It turns out the Cornish were actually talking about a different John Trelawney. They were talking about Sir John Trelawney, 1st Baronet (the grandfather of the 3rd Baronet). The 1st Baronet was a Royalist leader and fought for Charles I in the civil war, like your ancestors. He was imprisoned by the Parliamentarians in 1628. So the whole song is a case of mistaken identity. Also, the whole part about sending 20 000 Cornish to free the 3rd baronet from James II and VII is just pure creative liberty by Robert Hawker, it never actually happened.

However it fits in with the rest of my DNA profile and the genealogy puzzle makes sense now.
