  • Remove scale and minerals from a gravity fed solar water heater that has evacuated tubes, storage tank and replacing the magnesium rod / anode. Also explained the differences between anode rods made from magnesium, aluminium or zinc which are really important for extending the storage tank life.

    How the tubes are sealed with the tank, is there a rubber seal around the holes in the inner tank ?

    This was a very cool video. I don't think my solar geyser has any magnesium rods, but probably lots of clay residue. I have borehole water and clay accumulates quickly.

      It all depends where you live if there is a lot of soft rock like lime close by then yes but if live in area with a lot of hard rock like granite then probably not.

    Is it ok if i buy new one and put it there??

    • @brieftodo
      @brieftodo  4 года назад +1

      In theory yes if you can find a pure magnesium rod without a plastic or steel attachment cap. Never cut magnesium with a grinder blade or a saw blade as it is highly flammable. Good luck!

    What is the ratio of vinegar to be added to remove the scale inside of the tube

    • @brieftodo
      @brieftodo  3 года назад +2

      It is best to use pure white vinegar or for every litre of white vinegar mix with 4 tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate. If it is diluted with water it will work but will take longer to free the scale / hardened minerals what with being less concentrated.

    Hello in Mine I have a lot of lime
    How can I get rid of lime

    • @brieftodo
      @brieftodo  3 года назад

      To remove lime scale you need to dissolve it by using a solution of one litre of white vinegar mixed with four table spoons of sodium bicarbonate which should be added slowly in a well ventilated area.
      On the tank close the drain valve and fill it by pouring the solution via one of the tube holes. If the tubes contain lime scale put them in the shade standing vertically with some form of support and cushioned at the base then fill the tube(s) with the above solution.
      The lime scale should dissolve within an hour then rinse the tank and tubes well with water before reassembly.

    Where is the scale build up coming from? Is yours an open system, meaning the water also runs within the tubes?

    • @brieftodo
      @brieftodo  3 года назад +1

      Yes it is an open water system / gravity fed, the scale accumulates mainly in the base of every tube and in the base of the tank.

    Why not just buy a water softner ?

    • @brieftodo
      @brieftodo  2 года назад +1

      Only top end water softeners would cut it and they aren't exactly cheap, in Mexico a 250 litre gravity fed solar water heater only costs around $400 USD (2021). Plus solar water heaters need the silicon seals to be changed every 2-3 years so I now do that (in my other video) at the same time as cleaning the tubes and the tank.
