You can always tell the classically trained musicians. They are great.

I love to see someone experiencing Dirty Loops for the first time. They started the group as a hobby project in 2008, and never thought it would be anything other than that, and did twisted jazz fusion covers of top 40 pop songs. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong. The video went viral and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. They are very popular in Japan, and on the Japanese version of their debut album, "Loopified" they actually did a cover of "Automatic". I guess that's what the other group meant by "Dirty Loops' style". Unfortunately that song cannot be found on their own channel, but someone did a montage of live clips (not just from the "Automatic" song) to the studio version of the song and put it up on youtube. If youtube lets me, I'll post a link in a separate comment.
They aren't produced by Quincy Jones though, he was just their manager during the release of the "Phoenix" EP and the collab album with Cory Wong, "Turbo". I'm not sure if he is anymore, as they didn't mention it in the credits on their latest release. They're producing everything themselves, with the help of Simon Petrén. The one doing all their video editing is the drummer.
They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their late thirties. Jonah Nilsson (keyboard/vocals) and Henrik Linder (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron Mellergård (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production (iirc) as his main subject.
Just about everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality (and they're just as maddeningly good live), so you could pretty much pick any song to listen to, and you more than likely would not be disappointed. My personal favourite is one of their more jazz fusion-y pieces, "Work Shit Out".

I posted the link in a comment but it doesn't show. It's up on Universal Music Japan's channel; just search for "Automatic" on there. :)

Yes it's an original. You're not the first one, lots of people comparing Jonah's voice to Michael Jackson, but also Stevie Wonder 😎 I remember reading a comment saying he sounds like Stevie Wonder trying to sing as Michael Jackson, love that. These guys are something else. Incredible musicians. Would very much like to see you check out their masterpiece 'Work Shit Out'!

Thanks for a great reaction and interesting observations.
If I remember correctly, the Dirty Loopers have said of this song that it was ‘a mad flirt with Michael Jackson’ ;)
MJ was a big influence on Jonah, growing up. But so we’re all the other great vocalists, including Stevie Wonder (who hasn’t been influenced by Stevie?!) He’s been singing from the tender age of around one, but in his parents’s choirs. Both were choir masters. Only relatively late though did he try lead vocals in bands.
I’m virtually falling over myself, trying to recommend a good next Dirty Loops song, cause they’re all mindblowingly good 🔥🔥🔥
“Next To You’, ‘Thriller’ might be great ones tho to follow on from here….
    Enjoy that journey ☺️👍🙏

If you REALLY want to hear Jonah's vocals - listen to Breakdown. Listen to Work Shit Out for the best drum solo I've ever heard... that's Aron. But for insane bass - listen to Follow the Light with Cory Wong first, then watch Run Away. (The credits are full of jokes.)

Yes, the song is an original that they wrote, and if you think he sounds a little like M.J., then wait until you hear their version of Thriller. You'll think they are getting better with every song you hear. Amazing musicians.

This is an original song of theirs - they have several cover songs too. Jonah definitely gives you MJ vibes as well as Stevie Wonder from time to time. Quincy Jones is their manager but has nothing to do with the actual production. Check out more of their songs and you'll be surprised each time! Best band ever (and I've got tickets to see them live in November for the third time, yeah...) ♥

Quincy Jones production. Definitely Michael Jackson influences along with Stevie Wonder.

    • @lottawiklund8606

Jonah often mentions both Stevie and MJ as his influences for singing, but they had this sound from the start and Quincy Jones didn't become their manager until the "Phoenix" EP, so that's not because of him. And he was just their manager. They produce everything themselves, with the help of Simon Petrén, and they've said in interviews that they didn't send Quincy anything, not even demos, until they were all done with a song, video and all. Not sure if he's still managing them, as they didn't mention it in the credits of their latest release, as they normally do.
