Of all the legend bands of the 70s/80s, I think Journey make the best decision of a lifetime to take Arnel into the band. They probably rock on the journey the next 10-20 years ..at least..Schon nodded his head in approval .
I was there when they came to Charlotte, NC this year with Toto opening for them and I'll have to say- Arnel still has it man. Steve Perry's range is very hard to replicate and still today Arnel has been able to put it out. If you look at the line up of this year it is scary how many shows they have. That's impressive on Arnel's ability. Let's thank him for allowing the Journey band to keep playing these signature songs of theirs to this day!
I'll say the same thing I said in reply to Tita Manalasta's comment above. He does fine until he tries to hit the high notes. He can't quite get there anymore. And no one could belt out those songs like Steve. At least not when he was in his prime. For me, the only one that has come the closest has been Deen. I know he said he doesn't want to be the lead singer, but he can stay behind the drum kit and still sing. He did it in the short-lived group Journey Through Time. And what about bringing in Jason Derlatka? I thought the idea of bringing him in was to give Arnel a break. I think I've only seen 2 videos of him singing. I know one song was "I'll Be Alright Without You", which he nailed. I think the other one was "Girl Can't Help It", but I'm not 100% sure. Imo, they still need to can Arnel and let Deen and Jason split the lead vocals load.
Journey and Steve Perry fan here, I would say Arnel at his 50s does better singing live compare to Steve at 50s..Steve was monster back in 1970s-1980s but in 1990s he was declining ..I watched some of his gigs in early 2000s and he couldnt belt most of his hit songs. People age..people age😊 Still love him tho

Arnel was a great find. Her can sing the Perry songs yet still has his own voice and identity... Revelation was a great comeback album, but Eclipse took that momentum away IMHO. Looks like they've gotten it back with the Freedom album.
