Mr. Murthy, you chose a path of life that has taken you somewhere today. Good for you if you believe you have achieved success in life. However, another person may have a totally different perspective on life. Spending time with family, pursuing a hobby, getting involved in charitable activities, fitness, etc., may be more important than working crazy hours to climb the corporate ladder.
While I respect Mrs. Murthy and you immensely, you should have the humility to value different perspectives in a society. It is too egoistic of someone like you to say that you will listen only if someone is more successful than you. In what way should they be more successful than you? Money? Family life? Impact on society? Health? For all you know, one may be more successful than you in many fields.
The new India, unlike your times, youngsters want everything. Rather than having obscene amounts of money, they would prefer having respectable amount of money with a good work-life balance. I wouldn't say what you have done is wrong, but having the humility to accept a broader perspective is very important, especially when you employ so many young people who have their own ideas about what they want out of life.

But why should a person working for us should work 70 hrs a week ? Are we going to give him a share of our money ? At the maximum you would give him some shares and I would give a cash bonus that’s all. Work from 6am to 9pm and then get pizza after 9:15 upto 11 pm? That’s a straight up recipe for a heart attack. This man is insane. He has to realize that a truly advanced or developed society is one where each individual finds fulfilment, peace, security and happiness through physical and mental well being. Mr. Murthy was able to work long hours because he found his vocation in life. Unfortunately most people don’t, and end up in mediocre jobs, either because they have a limited capacity or aren’t as ambitious or are screwed by the school system or are born limited or have a different outlook towards life or whatever other reason among a multitude of things.
Driving people to work more hours might help make a company like Infosys or some such other hack a lot more money in the short term but it would lead to employee burnout and a demotivated workforce in the long run. Sure a demotivated, burnt out employee can be replaced by younger meat fresh out of college, but it would only lead to a dissatisfied, demotivated and demoralised populace and society over time. This would be like killing the goose that lays the golden egg.
Even an economist would tell you that a person is more likely to do efficient work if he finds his metier in life. We should be trying to help people do just that by giving them the tools and resources they need, the space to think and most importantly give them their time! So “work” is not just being at a job but also figuring out and getting to be the best version of themselves in a personal and professional sense. This can be 8 to 9 hours at a day job and the rest working towards your goals. Should this “work” in total constitute more than 70 hours a week? Sure! Why not. But don’t have pizza after 9 pm for God’s sake. You’ll ruin your gut and your heart.
Normalizing the idea that people spend 70 hours a week in jobs that they feel trapped in and are doing just to provide for their families is toxic as f**k and I am appalled that someone like Mr Murthy would advocate something like this. I am disappointed that he lacks the wisdom and foresight to see the horrible consequences of whatever he is advocating. One would expect people like him to come up with a vision of what we have to do to become a more fulfilled, peaceful, tolerant and progressive society but I guess that was expecting too much. He’s turned out to be just another businessman at the end of the day. What a crying shame for our great country!

They try to give advice in areas they may not be even qualified in. They don't let the young think for themselves or find their own ways. Already we are seeing a lot of increase in hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety and other mental health diseases, increasing incidents of divorce in young couples, burnout etc. and the last thing we need is someone influential like Mr. Murthy giving such a dangerous advice. And those who are young, please don't listen to such fools. Willfully working for bursts of overtime to address emergency is different from forcing someone to work for 10 hours per day. There by you are asking smart guy who does things faster will now work slower to compensate extra hours imposed or gets into coffee badging gets into habit of postponing. Productivity decreases further than it used to be. If Mr Muthy sir really wants to motivate to work like him, brew more startups give responsibility and share to eligible team and they will automatically work hard as it's their own start up. In 40 Hours/week people are getting stress and panic attack, and yours 70 hours work policy what will happen Have you ever thinked of?
Are you going to take care of the employees family if death occurs? And because of this normal living of Humans are getting affected.
I had earlier lots of respect for you, but now nothing is left.

This is what unbridled capitalism looks like. How did Mr Murthy get super duper rich? Lets do simple Maths. By hiring only 6 people and making them work for 70 hours for a 420 hour job. It would have required atleast 10 people had they worked the normal 40 hours. Thats 40 % less in payroll costs to his company! And 4 people are now unemployed instead of 10 people being employed. So there is 40 % unemployment, the 60% that are employed are overworked and Mr. Murthy and his board members pocket billions. How does that help nation building? Fallacy huh?

Full of air this man. 70 hrs a week can’t or any number of hours can’t be decreed as a blanket rule. Rather inspire employees with a sense of WHY, a sense of purpose in their jobs. They will scale up to working harder - even more than 70 hours for that matter! He who has a WHY can bear with any HOW. The Murthys have missed the point completely. I hate it that the Indian media gives them a pedestal to sing their conceit.

Instead of the word working hard the word might have been focused and dedicated in what ever meaningful contribution we do.If we love and dedicate ourselves to what we do there is no need to work hard ,we enjoy working for even 100 hours a week.
Every thing said and and done it’s individual choice which inspires him to work for more hours,if any body wants to achieve exceptionally well in their fields then yes even 100 hours a week is going to be normal.

But you people will think 1000 of times to on board one resource in USA as to pay more money, so , your replacing them with Indians for less money by making them to work in night shifts.

This video is an excellent example for workers to start prioritizing their health and family first before anything else. A company can easily replace its workers at any point of time and due to that a company doesn't require to care about its employees. Every company will say that they are this, they are that, but at the end of the day, they are just entities that are extremely greedy and want to make money at the expense of anything or anyone. It doesn't matter how good a company or its official promote themselves to be. At the end of the day, whatever they say must be taken as a grain of salt. Apart from squeezing the workers to gain more profit, nothing else matters to these corporations.

Your two kids surely didn't inherit the same struggle that you have gone through with all the foreign education they could afford so easily due to your persistent hard work, and now are leading lives with golden spoons in their mouths with all the Infosys stock inherited due to your hard work, luck and sacrifices. Will you still preach them to work hard and crack only the IIT and IIM exams? With affluence everyone changes and that is the reason the young India is also having different approach towards life.
Please accept that hard work alone doesn't guarantees success, there is one important factor called luck. Very few people succeed in their startups, and you too belong to that lucky category. Labour class is already working 7 days a week for 12 hours daily in India to build excellent Infrastructure for companies like Infosys but unfortunately do not have the capacity to boast or have any access to brag about work ethics or hard work or Simple life.
We do congratulate you on your success of having become a billionaire and wish a vey happy, meaningful and successful life to you and your kids but just don't give you the right to continuously lecture us on your simplicity and hard work on every show on television. Once in a while is OK but to appear on every show and blabbering doesn't really showcase your simplicity. To many it is turning into an attention seeking exercise.
My respect for you will be 10 folds more if you will support a movement that stocks owned by the founders should not be transferred on the basis of heredity rights of the children but donated to some trust for nation building. Let the kids find their own cause and success. Then surely you will have this right to preach on hard work, simple life and work ethics.

Ok Mr Murthy, is the definition of success just making wealth, prosperity, and comfortable life (plus spending some time with family)? Yes one may achieve this; but the problem is you will achieve it only for this one life. What about the next life? What is the use of working hard (like asses) without knowing what lies beyond this current life and our experience of this phenomenal world? No one thinks about this seriously or cares much. Vedic culture teaches us to prepare for the next life, otherwise we will have to take birth again, become diseased, get old, die again and the process continues. The pain at the time of birth and death is immense. How do we solve these real problems/ miseries of life? Birth, death, old age and disease are common to all, no one wants them, and no one can avoid them. What is the solution then? Mr Murthy should study Bhagavad Gita once: it is not just a religious book.

We have all these technology to do more things at small span of time. They are the ones who wish to make like western countries where they might be having 4 day work week and we are talking of 70hrs per week. Are we going backwards or forward?

What about disabled people? how many hours can they work? India's health care system sucks, infact pathetic. Come to western world, people in wheelchairs are working full time in every way of life among big and small private & govt employers. India needs to improve the health care system to the highest standard level so that disabled people can be employed respectully with dignity. India should generate more revenues through the tax system and invest in improving the healthcare industry especially for disabled people so they can be engaged in the employment industry. Tax the bollywood industry and the real estate industry where people owning more than 1 residential property should pay more in taxes and the govt of india will see huge revenues through this tax system to resolve many of the social issues, thereby enabling the unfortunate people to work in every industry.
