    @THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you for being our gardening guru! QUESTION-We just started seedlings on Wednesday morning using your 6:1 peat moss/vermiculite mix...sterilized it with boiling water. The seed starting mix still looks pretty dark brown on top...would you advise to still hold off on watering until the top looks dry again? Is it normal for the seed mix to hold water that long without drying out? Our LED lights are 7000 lumens about 2 inches above the seed trays. THANK YOU!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      It can hold it for a while before the plants are using and if the area doesnt get too warm. I would let the top dry as the bottom of the cell has water.

    Hello, I’m Sudhir from India. Your videos are very informative and of great help.
    Please help me understand and address a continuing problem with the watering of my plug trays, Some of my seedlings sort of shrivel ( damp off ? ) after bottom watering. I keep adding water into the water holding tray till the top surface of the soil in the plug tray is wet. My mix is 50:50 of Coco Coir and Vermiculite, without any other additives.
    I’ve lost a lot of healthy seedlings and always 1 or 2 days after watering. Please help.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 месяцев назад

      Damping off is visible as white fungus on stems. I would to do a 50 50. 3 parts coirs or peat and 1 part vermiculite might help.

    If I allow the top to dry out, won't it kill the chance of germination?

      If top of soil is constantly damp it increases the chance of seeds rotting. I have had it happen many times (but I am learning!). His point about damp attracting fungus mold and mites is a factor too. Gary truly has made almost all possible mistakes and done lots of real world research and trial and error on our behalf. So I’m confused so you are saying that I am moisten the soil by watering from below only and never from the top? Don’t I initially need to put the seed in
    The pod and put some water over top and then after that first initial time I put water over top. I can leave it alone and continue to water from the bottom?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 дней назад

      You can water from the top but it is messy and a pain. Bottom watering just makes it easier. The water wicks up and the top of the starting mix gets moist. So it works. Just always water from the bottom.

    @THERUSTEDGARDEN Tried this method - soil started to smell musty like an old basement with water damage/mildew. Afraid seed starts will damp off before germination. Cells have good drainage hole at bottom and using organic mix with vermiculite/perlite. Fan going 14 hours and under light 16 hours. Any advise to avoid having damp soil for days so bacteria/fungus won't grow?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 месяцев назад +1

      The soil is too wet. If you are bottom watering all excess has to be drained out after 20. minutes. The mix should dry out a good bit between watering. If you are doing all that, I am not sure why the mix is smelling like that. If your organic mix has organic fertilizers in it like chicken manure, blood meal or bone meal, once wet it smell like rotted manure for a while. Its just what organic does.

    I have planted seeds in a transparent plastic glass, seeds are hardly an inch or 1.3* inches deep. I can see through glass that bottom part(enough below the seeds) is dried while top part is moist. Is it oK? if i want to make the whole glass moist i have to add enough water which i think is over watering. Which way should I go with?

      You want to moisten soil to bottom. But if there is no drainage holes, you have to be careful

    I thought seeds shouldn’t dry out or they die. I’m a bit hesitant to just watch them get drier?

      They aren't drying out. The starting mix is only beginning to dry. It dries top to bottom.

    Why even put fertilizer at all during this stage??

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад

      You will need low amounts after they use up the seed coat. About 2 weeks after growing they will need low water soluble nitrogen
